Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the hardware store of Sam Loomis, there is a customer looking over a product. She is reading the uses section and voices a concern to Bob, the store clerk. What is the remark she poses to Bob about how trouble-free this item should be?

Answer: "Insect or man, I say death should always be painless."

The customer is inspecting a can of pesticide. She is played by Helen Wallace who appears on such TV series as "Hazel", "Rawhide", "Gunsmoke", and "Dr. Kildare". She has also served Rod Serling on his "Twilight Zone".
2. Lila Crane arrives at Sam's store looking for her sister, Marion Crane, who has just disappeared with money from a client of her employer. Lila confronts Sam about Marion being there and then starts to break down. Sam tells Bob, his clerk, to run out and eat his lunch so he can talk to Lila in private. Bob tells Sam that he has brought his lunch with him. What hysterically funny, but firm line does Sam throw back at Bob?

Answer: "Run out and eat it!"

Perhaps Bob doesn't know of Sam's affair but Sam couldn't have his employee involved in whatever else was going on. Lila and Marion Crane are interesting counterparts. Lila is headstrong and direct. Marion is gentle and mysterious. However there is drive in both women that is used one way for creating a problem, and another way for solving a problem.
3. Detective Arbogast enters Sam's store as Sam and Lila are trying to figure out what may have happened to Marion. Sam asks Arbogast what his interest in the matter is and Arbogast tells him, "40,000 dollars." Arbogast and Lila exchange a long stare in silence. Not knowing what is going on, Sam loses his patience and shouts an icebreaker to Lila and Arbogast. What is the demanding line?

Answer: "One of you better tell me what's going on and tell me fast!"

Lila is being very vague with Sam. When Arbogast shows up, it all becomes too much for Sam to take in, and he is tired of being left in the dark. He has a hard time believing Marion could do such a thing. He also suggests to Lila that she may have been in a hold up or hospitalized. He is told by Arbogast that she was seen leaving town by her employer.

Arbogast is played by Martin Balsam, who landed on the original jury in "Twelve Angry Men" and was a suspect in "Murder on the Orient Express". Sadly, he is no longer with us. He passed away in 1996.
4. Arbogast comes to the conclusion that everyone involved is quick to doubt Marion's criminal streak. He then assures Lila that Marion is somewhere in town and he will find her. What part of the hardware store does Arbogast convince Lila that Marion was not in?

Answer: The nuts and bolts

Arbogast also assumes that where Marion's boyfriend is may be where she wound up at. This is the reason for Arbogast going to Fairvale. He also figures she isn't alone because "Someone always sees a girl with 40,000 dollars." Slight scene reference here too:
In scene 1, Sam suggests to Marion: "Yeah, and come live with me in the back of a hardware store in Fairvale."
5. Arbogast comes across the Bates motel as Marion did by getting off the main highway. After Arbogast meets Norman, he tells him that he has seen many motels in the past few days. He then makes a startling statement about the eerie rest stop. What elusive characteristic does Arbogast convey to Norman about his property?

Answer: "This is the first place that looks like it is hiding from the world."

Arbogast also plays on words and tells Norman his eyes are "blurry with neon." After they are inside, in the middle of the interrogation, Norman remembers he has to turn on his own neon sign.
6. Norman tries to cover his tracks while being interrogated by Arbogast about Marion's stay at the motel. Norman has already told Arbogast that he doesn't recognize Marion's photo that Arbogast shows him. Norman then further tries to snow Arbogast by inviting him to help change linens in the cabins. What odd description does Norman give to Arbogast about the condition of the rooms?

Answer: "It's kind of a, I don't know, creepy smell."

Norman changes linens once a week to get rid of the mustiness. It is unusual that Arbogast doesn't take Norman up on his offer to go to the cabins. Perhaps the sleuth would have found evidence that later surfaced when Sam and Lila visit the grounds. It seems he prefers to have his investigation cut short.
7. After turning down Norman's invitation to help with linens, Arbogast stares intensely at Norman's house. He notices a woman sitting in the window but Norman won't let him in the house to talk to her. Arbogast asks Norman if he is hiding Marion. He then suggests that Marion might be making a fool out of Norman. This provokes Norman and Arbogast tries to cool him down. What smooth line does he use on Norman?

Answer: "It's not a slur on your manhood."

Norman is really panicking at that moment and knows that Arbogast must be stopped from going into his house. Norman chooses the wrong words though when he tells the detective that Marion didn't fool his mother, as it only encourages Arbogast to pay him a second visit. Norman smiles as Arbogast drives away thinking he has gotten rid of him.
8. After talking with Norman and not getting anywhere, Arbogast calls Lila from a nearby payphone. He explains that he questioned Norman Bates, but wasn't allowed by Norman to see his sick old mother. He then makes a frustrated statement to Lila. What is it?

Answer: "I'm not entirely satisfied."

Arbogast decides to return to the motel and enter the house to question the mother. This cast has some guts, even if Norman doesn't. Sam has secret meetings in old hotel rooms. Marion takes the money and runs and sleeps on the side of the road. Arbogast returns to badger an invalid and makes gel aspic. Lila wants to bust in on an interrogation. How dare Marion take that shower curtain with her? What a legendary controversy! Hitchcock throws everything but the kitchen sink in his content.
9. During Arbogast's call to Lila, he comments that his arrival back to the store with news from Mrs. Bates would not take long. He then gives Lila some faith concerning Sam. What does Arbogast tell Lila about Sam's supposed involvement with Marion's disappearance?

Answer: "Our friend Sam Loomis didn't know Marion was here."

Arbogast gives her a time frame of an hour or less on his return to the hardware store with some news for Lila. Lila repeats this time frame to Sam at the store when Arbogast doesn't show and she is worried. If Sam didn't wait so long, maybe he could have saved the poor detective from an incriminating slash. So much for changing the course of the movie.
10. When Arbogast doesn't show up at the hardware store or call, Lila is distressed and sure something has happened to him. She gets jumpy and wants to go out to the motel. Sam doesn't like the idea of her going out to the motel and into the Bates house alone. Lila retorts back using what edgy statement?

Answer: "Patience doesn't run in my family, Sam."

Sam winds up going in her place. He hollers and hollers for Arbogast at the motel but Arbogast and his car are already immersed in the swamp around the corner. Norman is lurking there and refuses to show himself. He is peculiarly basking in the charade.
