The story begins at the Bodega Bay Inn in 1939 where a puppet stares out an upper-floor window. The puppet keeps his eyes peeled for a similar living puppet while his master finishes painting a third puppet, casting a magical incantation upon it to give it powers. Two men arrive at the Bodega Bay Inn wearing long, black jackets and wide hats and the puppet in the window informs his master of this. Said men, actually Nazis, walk in step and take the elevator up to the puppet master's room where, already, he's stowed away his creations.

After Toulon boxes up his creations with a number of scrolls and alchemical supplies, he seals them up in a unique case and hides them away, shifting the chest in behind a deep panel in his Bodega Bay Inn wall. And no sooner than that do the Nazis outside arrive and knock on his door to ask after him.

They're too late though; even though they bring out their guns and intend to retrieve him, he's one step ahead, placing the barrel of his own mouth and firing as they barge in.

In the present day, a group of psychics (one working at Yale University, one at a carnival, etc.) starts to experience horrible things befalling them. Alex dreams of giant leeches on his body while Dana is attacked by someone with a blade while she crawls down a hotel hallway.

In New York City, Carissa and Frank, both working at a psychic institute, also realize that their visions mean something and decide to follow the messages to the California coast.

The four psychics arrive at the Bodega Bay Inn because they seem to have been invited by a fellow psychic, Neil, and his wife, Megan, to investigate their recent finding-- the chest hidden by Andre Toulon. Neil, as it seems, has recently died. Megan shows them to the body, still in its casket in the other room, and explains that Neil shot himself though the reasons why are unclear.

They plan to bury him the next day. As Megan leaves the room, some of the psychics, concerned with not having picked up on the fact that Neil died, decide to test the corpse to make sure it's really dead.

It is.

Answer: A taxidermy dog

As the psychics settle into their new lodgings for the night, Dana tries to cleanse the housekeeper with hickory and dragon's blood, warning her to stay away from the fireplace because she's in grave danger. As the housekeeper leaves, she tries to peer through the keyhole and finds that Dana keeps a taxidermy dog in her luggage. You know, the type of thing you take on a plane.
The others also begin experiencing visions, each one indicating that Neil and Megan had interesting and complex lives in the Bodega Bay Inn. How exactly all of it comes together is the mystery.
The night of the psychics' arrival, as they all settle in for the evening, a puppet emerges from Neil's casket.

Megan tells the others, over dinner, that she inherited the Bodega Bay Inn from her parents who owned it since the turn of the century. Neil ended up meeting her when he was staying there on a project and they married. Neil wanted to renovate the hotel entirely, so they shut it down and tore it apart. One day though, Neil just stopped everything and spent a year locked up with his work.
Over dinner, Dana makes it clear that none of them really like Neil as he used them all in some way. It's later let out that they were all helping him solve the mysteries behind alchemy and their powers led him to the Bodega Bay Inn. Frank found out that the Egyptians found a way to store life in figurines while Dana's knowledge led him to the hotel and Andre Toulon.
Unable to heed Dana's psychic prophecy, the housekeeper ends up stoking the hotel fireplace and, there, a puppet with a tiny head kills her.

Megan faints when she finds Neil's body sitting in a chair. While she's unconscious, the psychics talk about their plans to search the Bodega Bay Inn for the secrets behind his work. They fully intend to get what they feel is rightfully theirs.
Frank and Carissa, in their room, discuss what they would do with the powers they expect to find in the hotel and Frank completely believes that he would be strong enough to rule the world, considering what he knows about it.
Dana, meanwhile, fearing that all of them are in danger, performs protective spells on Alex and his room because she thinks that Neil plans to hurt them.

In an attempt to learn more, Frank and Carissa opt to perform a psycho-sexual experiment in their room. Shortly after Carissa ties Frank to the bed though, their time together is interrupted by...puppets. One puppet with a horrifying drill for a head ends up sneaking into the room and attacking Carissa while she looks under the bed, drilling into her skull.

While this happens, Frank, blindfolded and tied to the bed, is attacked by a female puppet who spews magical leeches onto his skin, bleeding him dry.

Answer: In the elevator

Dana returns to her room with her dog and a bottle of wine to find Neil's body seated, waiting for her. She begins to perform one of her spells on the body, but she's attacked by the puppets and forced to flee into the hallway with a broken leg. During her escape attempt, one of the puppets ends up attacking and killing her with a blade, fulfilling the prophecy she had while working at the carnival. Alex continues to have dreams of impending doom and terror, but he follows Megan up to Andre Toulon's room anyways.

They end up racing down to the dining room to find all of the other psychics dead. The perpetrator? The puppets, of course. But also Neil.

As it seems, Neil has perfected the Egyptian technique of achieving immortality by placing souls into the bodies of human dolls, much like Andre Toulon before him. Neil admits that yes, he did die in a physical sense, but he was resurrected using the process. He also ended up using his powers to contact the others to make sure that they would never pursue his research, stealing the secret of immortality for themselves. To get the secret, he had to kill Megan's parents to gain access to the hotel, and after years of courting Megan and searching the building, he finally got what he wanted.
Neil states his desire to use the other psychics as test subjects because of his disdain for Toulon's dolls, but once the dolls catch wind of this, they decide to band together to torture and murder their new master, destroying his body and rendering his immortality virtually useless. All of this in front of the remaining survivors in the most traumatic way.
Alex and Megan escape in the end, and after Alex departs, Megan brings Dana's taxidermy dog back from the dead. Because why learn your lesson when you have alchemical magic and puppets?
