Quantum of Solace Trivia Quiz

With a good script and excellent performances by all concerned, this "Bond" offering is almost as good as its predecessor. Unfortunately many of the action scenes were filmed in extreme close-up, making them a little too gritty and confusing to follow.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie opens to a thrilling car chase, with someone in hot pursuit of Bond. Bond finally manages to get away and deliver his package (secured in the trunk of his car) to where M is waiting. Who is the package?

Answer: Mr. White

We first met Mr. White in "Casino Royale". He was the man whom Bond tracked down at the end of the movie, using the messages on Vesper's phone, and shot.
"Quantum of Solace" picks up right from that scene, with Bond taking White to M for questioning, to learn more about the organization that he is part of. After White arrogantly tells M that the first thing she needs to know is that they have people everywhere, one of M's own assistants turns out to be one of those people, and starts firing on the group. White manages to get away and is seen later in the film at the opera.
Mr. White is played by Jesper Christensen, in both films.
2. In yet another vehicle chase, Bond finds himself a passenger in a car, driven by Camille, that is being pursued by a motorcycle. As a result of the chase, a truck ends up losing part of its cargo, allowing them to escape from the biker. What is the cargo?

Answer: coffins

Following a money trail, Bond ends up in a hotel in Haiti, where he kills the man whose room he is searching. From the front desk, Bond picks up a briefcase that has been delivered for this man. Camille recognizes the case and thinks that Bond is the man she has been sent to pick up.

She doesn't realize that the man whom she is picking up is supposed to kill her, a fact that is revealed when Bond opens the case. Although the motorcyclist's identity is never revealed, it does look as if he has been sent to make sure the job is done, and he pursues them rather closely.

The truck dumps part of its load of coffins, which smash to pieces on the street, blocking the motorcycle from pursuit. Intact coffins can also be seen on the truck. Camille is played by Olga Kurylenko.
3. Bond follows Greene to an operatic performance, where members of Quantum are holding a very careful meeting. He hears them talking to each other via an electronic device he has inserted into his ear. Where does he get that device?

Answer: in a goody bag

As the opera guests arrive, each is given a goody bag from the pile on the table. Bond notices that when one man walks up, the hostess reaches underneath the table and gives him a special bag. Bond kills the man and takes the bag, finding the device in a box inside.
4. By use of the device, Bond is able to listen to the conversation between Quantum members. How does he get some of them to identify themselves?

Answer: by joining in on their conversation

After listening to the Quantum members talk for a bit, Bond adds his advice, which causes many of the members to get up from their seats. It's unclear as to whether they are fleeing, or if they intend to pursue Bond, but he snaps pictures of them with his camera phone and sends them back to be identified. Bond does end up in a fight with one man, who ends up dying after being shot and falling off the roof.

The man turns out to be the bodyguard of one of the British Prime Minister's advisors, which infuriates M.
5. The opera that the members of Quantum are attending has an unusual set piece which dominates the stage. What is it?

Answer: a giant eye

It's really more an iris than an entire eye, and it is suspended in the air and presides over the action on stage. Blue light pulses through the iris, for very dramatic effect.
The opera being performed is Pucinni's "Tosca".
6. Convinced that he can't be trusted, M has Bond's credit cards and identities cancelled and alerts all airports to watch out for him. Who does he turn to for a new identity and credit card?

Answer: Mathis

We first met Mathis in "Casino Royale"; he was the police officer who was supposedly helping Bond and Vesper win the poker game. Circumstantial evidence led Bond to suspect that Mathis was working with LeChiffre, so Bond had him arrested.
In "Quantum of Solace" we find that Mathis has been found innocent, and as recompense for what he has been put through, they have given him Mr. White's estate to live in.
Mathis provides Bond with fake I.D. and money, and accompanies him to Bolivia. However that is the only service he provides, as he is injured and crammed into the trunk of Bond's car, to incriminate him. When Bond tries to extricate Mathis, he is shot by the police, and dies. It's a shame that they brought the character back for no more than that.
Mathis is played, in both films, by Giancarlo Giannini.
7. When they arrive in Bolivia, they are met by an agent from MI6, who tells Bond she has orders to get Bond back on the next available flight. Mathis wryly remarks that he thinks she has handcuffs. What does Bond reply?

Answer: "I do hope so."

Bond's comment is obviously full of sexual innuendo. The agent introduces herself as Fields, not giving her first name, but the credits list her as Strawberry Fields. Since the next available flight isn't until the following day, she has plenty of time to fall prey to Bond's charms.
Strawberry Fields is played by Gemma Arterton.
8. Fields takes Bond to a very shabby looking hotel, which is not to his taste at all. She explains that it fits with their cover. Bond moves them to a much more luxurious hotel. How does he explain this, while keeping the same cover?

Answer: He says that they won the lottery.

At the reception desk of the more luxurious hotel, Bond explains to the desk clerk that they are teachers on sabbatical (which is the cover that Fields has constructed) who have won the lottery. The clerk seems amused by this explanation. Bond's flippancy makes it clear that he feels the deception of a cover is not needed.
9. At a fund raising event for Dominic Greene's cover company, Bond reconnects with Camille. Why she is so determined to get to General Medrano?

Answer: He killed her family.

When Camille was quite young, Medrano came to her home to kill her father. He also 'did things' to her mother and sister (Camille was too young for his taste), before killing them in front of her. He then set the house on fire with Camille still in it. Her desire for revenge is very strong.
Greene is working with Medrano, offering to support him in his attempt to overthrow the government, in exchange for the rights to a large piece of desert. Medrano is happy to give Greene the land because extensive searching has not revealed oil deposits.
Medrano is played by Joaquin Cosio.
10. What eventually happens to Fields?

Answer: She is drowned in oil.

Returning from an exploration with Camille (involving an interesting plane chase) Bond is greeted at the desk with a note from his 'wife'. The note reads simply "Run", but Bond decides to check out the room. In it he finds M who cautions him about knowing who his friends are. Bond sees Field's body on the bed, completely covered in oil. M informs him that Fields also has oil in her lungs.
Greene's interest in owning a piece of Bolivian desert and his buying of pipe line has everyone suspecting that he is after oil, which is probably why Greene has Fields killed this way.
11. What substance is Greene seeking to control?

Answer: water

When exploring in the desert (after being shot down in the plane and parachuting to safety) Bond and Camille find an underground reservoir, where Greene is damming up the natural water supplies. The effects of this are clearly seen when they walk through a village whose water supply has dried up. Later, we see Greene with Medrano, negotiating rates for supplying water to Bolivia. Medrano protests that it is twice what they currently pay, but Greene has created a monopoly, so Medrano has no choice.
12. When Greene is found dead in the desert, what is found in his stomach?

Answer: oil

Bond and Camille succeed in destroying the hotel in the desert, where Greene and Medrano are meeting. After Camille exacts her revenge on Medrano, they find Greene attempting to escape by foot into the desert. Realizing how impossible the task is, Bond allows Greene to escape, tossing a can of motor oil at him with a comment about how soon that would begin to look attractive, seeing as he is without water.

This is obviously in revenge for what happened to Fields. M later tells Bond that Greene has been found shot (presumably by someone from Quantum) and he has oil in his stomach, proving that Bond was right about the fluid looking attractive.
13. We next see Bond in Russia, confronting Vesper's old boyfriend, Yusef Kabira, who had been implicit in her death. What nationality is the woman he is with?

Answer: Canadian

Bond has figured out that Yusef actually works for Quantum. His job is to get close to women in powerful places, extracting either money or information from them for his safe return, when he is allegedly kidnapped. The woman he is with is a member of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service stationed in Russia. Bond sends her packing, with instructions to tell her employer about Yusef.
Yusef Kabira is played by Simon Kassianides.
14. How does Bond convince the woman who is with Yusef that he (Bond) is telling the truth?

Answer: He has the same necklace that she is wearing.

Bond notices that the woman is wearing the same necklace that Vesper wore for much of "Casino Royale" - an Algerian Love Knot. He comments on the necklace and says that he bets that Yusef gave it to her. He then produces the necklace that Vesper wore, as added proof. She quickly leaves.
The necklace ends up being later dropped in the snow, when Bond is talking to M, as proof that his driving need for revenge has been quelled.
15. In "Quantum of Solace" do we ever hear Bond utter the famous line, "Bond, James Bond"?

Answer: No

Having only become a big Bond fan with "Casino Royale", I cannot state definitively that Bond uses this form of introduction in every movie However, I have never seen a Bond film where he hasn't said this, until now. With some of the other references to other Bond films (the girl having the corny name Strawberry Fields, and her oil drenched, dead body mirroring the gold painted, dead body of a previous Bond girl) I am surprised that they didn't use the line somewhere in the film.

It was certainly used in "Casino Royale".
