Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who plays the mother of Dr. Lawrence Claudet, Robert Young's character in "The Sin of Madelon Claudet"?

Answer: Helen Hayes

Madelon Claudet becomes pregnant by a man who promises to marry her and never returns. Her son ends up in an orphanage, and she must do what she can to provide for her child, even turning to prostitution so that he can attend medical school when he grows up.

She visits him later after he is a doctor, but he doesn't know that she is his mother. Helen Hayes won a well-deserved Oscar as Best Actress for this role. The screenplay was written by Helen's husband Charles MacArthur.
2. In "Today We Live", Robert Young plays Ronnie, the brother of Joan Crawford's character.

Answer: False

Franchot Tone plays Ronnie, the brother of Joan's character (in real life they fell in love during the making of this movie). Robert Young plays a childhood friend of theirs, Claude, who Joan marries after she believes her pilot lover (Gary Cooper) to be killed in action during WWI.

It turns out he's not dead, but before Joan is forced to make a choice between them, Claude volunteers to go on a suicide mission.
3. Which actors played the two comrades of Robert Young's character in "Three Comrades"?

Answer: Franchot Tone and Robert Taylor

Robert Young played Gottfried, Robert Taylor played Erich and Franchot Tone played Otto, in this tale of three WWI veterans who care for the same woman. "Three Comrades" also stars Margaret Sullavan, Guy Kibbee and Lionel Atwill. Writer F. Scott Fitzgerald worked on many screenplays while in Hollywood, but this was the only film he received screenplay credit for.
4. Who was Robert Young's leading lady in "Cairo"?

Answer: Jeanette MacDonald

Robert Young played Homer Smith, a reporter in Egypt who suspects star Marcia Warren (MacDonald) of being a spy. Ethel Waters, Lionel Atwill and Reginald Owen also star in this 1942 musical comedy directed by W.S. Van Dyke.
5. In what film does Robert Young play the character of Larry Ballentine?

Answer: They Won't Believe Me

I didn't enjoy seeing Robert Young play a heel in this film, but he did an alright job. He plays a philandering husband who is in an auto accident which kills his girlfriend (Susan Hayward), while they are running off together. Authorities believe the dead woman to be his wife, which gives him an idea.

After returning to their remote ranch, he finds that his wife (Rita Johnson) has committed suicide after reading his letter asking for a divorce. Larry is then put on trial for murder, but because he thinks they won't believe the truth, he concocts a bunch of lies.
6. In "Tugboat Annie", Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery play the parents of Robert Young. Who plays his girlfriend, Pat?

Answer: Maureen O'Sullivan

Annie and Terry (Dressler and Beery) run a tugboat business, but Annie is always having to watch out for Terry because he drinks. They want more for their son, Alec, and he grows up to be the captain of a steamship. Things go from bad to worse for Annie, but later when Alec needs their help, they are there for him.
7. Robert Young appeared in "The Canterville Ghost", "That Forsyte Woman" and "H.M. Pulham, Esq.". Put them in chronological order.

Answer: H.M. Pulham, Esq., The Canterville Ghost, That Forsyte Woman

"H.M. Pulham, Esq.", from 1941, also starred Hedy Lamarr, Ruth Hussey and Charles Coburn. "The Canterville Ghost", from 1944, also starred Charles Laughton and Margaret O'Brien. "That Forsyte Woman", from 1949, also starred Errol Flynn, Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon.
8. Robert Young appeared in three films with Margaret Sullavan.

Answer: True

They appeared together in "The Mortal Storm" (1940), "Three Comrades" (1938) and "The Shining Hour" (1938). All three films were directed by Frank Borzage.
9. What was the name of the character played by Robert Young in "Claudia"?

Answer: David Naughton

"Claudia" is about a young, newly married woman (Dorothy McGuire) who childishly resists adjusting to married life and living far away from her mother. She must grow up fast when she discovers that she's expecting, and that her mother is dying. Ina Claire and Reginald Gardiner also star in "Claudia", from 1943. A sequel, "Claudia and David", was released in 1946.
10. In "Journey for Margaret", Robert Young plays newspaperman John Davis, who is in London during WWII. He and his wife visit an orphanage and fall in love with a little girl named Margaret and her brother, who they plan to adopt and take back to the States. Who played Margaret?

Answer: Margaret O'Brien

From 1942, "Journey for Margaret" stars Laraine Day as John's wife, Nora. Also starring are Fay Bainter, Nigel Bruce and William Severn. Directed by W.S. Van Dyke, aka One-Take Woody. This was his last film, he died in 1943.
