Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What film gave Dan Aykroyd an Oscar nomination?

Answer: Driving Miss Daisy

Aykroyd was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this 1989 movie, losing out to Denzel Washington for his role in "Glory." Aykroyd played Boolie, the son of Daisy (81-year-old Jessica Tandy, who became the oldest person to win an Oscar). Daisy's chauffeur was future Oscar winner Morgan Freeman. "Driving Miss Daisy" chronicled the friendship between an elderly Jewish Atlanta widow and her black chauffeur in the 1950s.

The Canadian-born Aykroyd was one of the original SNL actors.
2. What 1973 movie earned Randy Quaid an Oscar nomination?

Answer: The Last Detail

Randy won a Supporting Actor nomination for his role as Larry Meadows, a Navy prisoner who was spending time in jail for petty theft being escorted by two Navy lifers, played by Jack Nicholson and Otis Young, to Boston. Quaid, who was on the show for the 1985-86 season, lost to John Houseman of "The Paper Chase."
3. What earned George Coe an Oscar nomination?

Answer: Live action short subject

Coe was nominated for a 1969 short subject entitled "The Dove," a parody of Ingmar Bergman films. In addition to being a writer, he was a cast member very early in the show's history.
4. Joan Cusack was nominated for a lead acting role in "Working Girl".

Answer: False

Joan earned Supporting Actress nominations for 1989's "Working Girl" (about a secretary who witnesses mergers of a Wall Street investment firm), and 1998's "In & Out" as the fiancee of a gay English teacher. Cusack, a cast member in 1985-86, was the first "SNL" player to receive two Oscar nominations.
5. What film earned Robert Downey, Jr. an Oscar nomination?

Answer: Chaplin

Downey, who was a cast member for the 1985-1986 season, was nominated for a Best Actor in the 1992 biopic about Charlie Chaplin. Downey played the title character, whose life from his years in England to his troubled later years were chronicled. Downey lost to "Scent of a Woman" star Al Pacino.
6. How did Michael McKean earn an Oscar nomination?

Answer: Composing

McKean found some fame before "Saturday Night Live," with roles in "This Is Spinal Tap" and "Laverne and Shirley." McKean was the first person to host (1984), be a musical guest (1984), and a cast member (1993-1995) of "Saturday Night Live." His nomination was for Best Original Song Co-writer in 2004's "A Mighty Wind," which was a documentary-style movie that followed a fictitious folk group.
7. What film gave Eddie Murphy his first Oscar nomination?

Answer: Dreamgirls

Murphy played soul singer James "Thunder" Early in the 2006 movie based on a 1981 Broadway hit, which earned him a Supporting Role nomination; he lost to Alan Arkin of "Little Miss Sunshine." "Dreamgirls" followed a fictitious Supremes-like Motown group that originally was a backing band for a soul singer.

In the movie, the lead singer got replaced by someone thinner and more attractive. Murphy was on the show from 1980-1984 and later had a minor music career with a cover of Rick James' "Party All the Time." Murphy co-starred in "Dreamgirls" with Oscar winners (Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx), Grammy winner (Beyonce' Knowles), and a Tony winner (Anika Noni Rose). Before "Dreamgirls", his movie career had been mixed with successes ("Beverly Hills Cop," "The Nutty Professor") and disasters ("The Adventures of Pluto Nash," "Holy Man").
8. What Bill Murray film earned him an Oscar nomination?

Answer: Lost in Translation

Murray was nominated for his role as an actor shooting a commercial in Japan whose love interest was played by Scarlett Johanssen. He lost the 2003 Best Actor nomination to Sean Penn for his role in "Mystic River." Murray was one of the 'Not Ready for Prime Time Players'.
9. Which of these actors was nominated for an Oscar in the 1970s?

Answer: Randy Quaid

Short subject actor George Coe and Supporting Actor nominee Randy Quaid were nominated before the show began in 1975. Coe was nominated for 1969's "The Dove" while Quaid was nominated for 1973's "The Last Detail".
10. None of the first nine Oscar nominations for former "SNL" players netted a single Oscar win.

Answer: True

Despite many accomplishments, through eight actors and nine nominations, the Oscar statuette had eluded "Saturday Night Live" performers in the first 32 years of the show's history.
