Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She was a streetwalker, while he was a very successful businessman. He invited her up to his penthouse suite, where she ate strawberries and drank champagne while lying on the floor watching an old comedy show. Which comedic genius, stomping around in a vat full of grapes, was Vivian watching?

Answer: Lucille Ball

With sincerest apologies to any fervent fans, I admit that I do not know which of Lucille Ball's many versions of her television show this episode hailed from. However it was indeed America's favourite redhead that Vivian Ward watched in Edward Lewis' penthouse suite.
Born in 1911, and passing in 1989, Lucille Ball started her entertainment career as a Ziegfield girl while still a teen. However she will best be remembered as the zany klutz who made millions laugh on her weekly television shows.
The movie was 'Pretty Woman' (1990), directed by Garry Marshall and starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.
2. She was an old woman, working with clay on her potter's wheel, when she saw a news clip on TV about a sketch that had been brought up from the wreckage of a once great ship, lying on the ocean's floor. She recognized the picture immediately, having posed for it on the very night the ship sank on its maiden voyage. She ended up joining the salvage ship, and took the crew through the details of that fateful night. From 1997, what James Cameron directed movie was this?

Answer: Titanic

Rose De Witt Bukater boarded the Titanic as a young girl, being forced into a high society marriage that she did not want. The telling of her fictional story, as she met and fell in love with third class passenger Jack Dawson, was intertwined with the story of the great ship and some of her real passengers. The special effects created a powerful film, that didn't suffer too badly from the inclusion of the love story.
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio headed the large, ensemble cast.
3. Bridget Jones was 30 something, slightly overweight and struggling with her perpetual singleness. With all that complicating her own life, she also had to help her father deal with the fact that her mother had left him to start both a new career and relationship with a minor television personality. What type of show did Bridget and her dad watch her mom appear on, assisting her new boyfriend?

Answer: a shopping program

'Bridget Jones's Diary' (2001) was a very funny movie that chronicled the angst of being over thirty and single in a couples driven world. Her mother's concurrent midlife crisis resulted in her modeling jewelry on the shopping channel, while the new love of her life, a man of very high colour, described it. Everything worked out in the end as Bridget's parents reunited, and Bridget finally got together with the man of her dreams.
Renee Zellweger, Gemma Jones, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant starred.
4. Betty Sizemore was watching a taped episode of her favourite soap opera when her husband was brutally killed in their own home. The shock at what she witnessed sent her into a fugue like state, where she believed she was a character from the show. She set off in pursuit of one of the other characters, who she believed to be her one time fiancé. Unfortunately her husband's killers were in hot pursuit, because of the stolen drugs in the back of her car. Who played the unfortunate title character in 'Nurse Betty'?

Answer: Renee Zellweger

Neil LaBute directed this dark comedy that also starred Greg Kinnear, Chris Rock and the incomparable Morgan Freeman. Freeman's voyage of self-discovery, as he embarked on his last job before retirement, was the best part of the film.
5. In 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' (1982), a very powerful bond formed between E.T. and his new friend Elliott, to the point where Elliott was able to feel much of what E.T. was feeling. One afternoon, when Elliott was at school, E.T. helped himself to a beer from the fridge, and watched some television. As he flipped through the channels, he encountered a scene from a movie, in which the two stars exchanged a passionate kiss. Elliott responded to this by grabbing one of the girls at school and kissing her. The film was 'The Quiet Man'. Who starred in 'The Quiet Man'?

Answer: John Wayne

In 'The Quiet Man', John Wayne starred as a retired boxer seeking peace in the countryside in Ireland, where his mother grew up. There he fell in love with Mary Kate Danahar (played by Maureen O'Hara), a local girl whose brother hated Wayne. The quaint courting customs of the Irish village were foreign to Wayne, but he found he had to play by their rules, in order to make Mary Kate his bride.
6. Curt Henderson and Steve Bolander had graduated from high school and were college bound. They spent their last night in the city cruising around in their cars and saying goodbye to their old friends. At the beginning of the movie it was Curt who was uncertain about whether he wanted to go, while Steve was very enthusiastic. Feeling confused, Curt spent the night pursuing a beautiful blonde in a white T-Bird. At one point Curt stopped and watched 'Ozzie and Harriet', on a television in a store window. Ironically, Curt ended up leaving for college, while Steve opted to stay home with his girlfriend. What 1973 George Lucas film was this?

Answer: American Graffiti

'American Graffiti' showcased the talents of a young Richard Dreyfuss as Curt, and Ron Howard as Steve. Harrison Ford, Charles Martin Smith, Cindy Williams and McKenzie Phillips also starred, with a guest appearance by Wolfman Jack.
7. While Shrek and Fiona were off visiting Fiona's parents in the kingdom of Far Far Away, their friends stayed behind and house sat for them. Using the Magic Mirror as a television, they caught a glimpse of Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots being arrested by 'Knights'. Of course since Shrek and Donkey had been radically altered by the Happily Ever after Potion, they were only recognizable because of their voices. Who provided the voice for the irresistible Puss in Boots?

Answer: Antonio Banderas

'Shrek 2' started with Shrek and Fiona returning from their honeymoon to the swamp, only to receive a summons from Fiona's parents. Shrek reluctantly agreed to go, but unfortunately, things didn't go any better than he feared they would. Unhappy that his daughter had married an ogre, and beholden to the Fairy Godmother, the King did everything he could to break them up, including hiring a hit man to take Shrek out. Fortunately the King had a change of heart, right when it was the most important.
8. This teenage-coming-of-age movie was set in the 50s, at Rydell High. Did Danny, tough-talking leader of the T-Birds, and Sandy, sweet and innocent student from Australia, resolve their differences and find happiness? Of course they did! While trying to fit in with the girls at her new school, Sandy attended a sleep-over at Frenchie's house, with the rest of the Pink Ladies (where she was pronounced to be too pure to be pink). During the party, one of the girls mimicked a commercial for toothpaste, which they were watching on TV. What was the name of this popular musical?

Answer: Grease

True love found its way, in this film that was very loosely based on 'The Gift of the Magi'. Sandy's and Danny's summer romance had trouble standing the strains of high school, because of the interference of his friends, and the fact that their values were so very different. Through love, all was possible, as each made some changes to meet the other in the middle.

At least that was how it was intended to play out. However Sandy's changes were more extreme than Danny's were, and the message got lost somewhere along the way. Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta starred.
9. Everybody knew that mermaids don't exist, but he swore that one rescued him, when he fell overboard as a child. Years later she came looking for him, arriving completely naked and speaking very little English. She learned to speak English largely through watching TV. Who played the beautiful mermaid in 'Splash', becoming the first person ever to show her naked bottom in a Disney backed film?

Answer: Daryl Hannah

Ron Howard directed this 1984 Touchstone film that also starred Tom Hanks, Eugene Levy and John Candy.
Apparently Hannah, a vegetarian, refused to eat real lobster during filming, and was even upset about having to use real lobster shells.
10. In 'The Terminal' Viktor Navorski finds himself trapped in limbo, unable to gain access to the States, and unable to leave. The reason for this is that while he was in transit, his home country of Krakozhia ceased to exist, due to war. Without a valid passport and papers, Viktor couldn't go anywhere. He set up house in the airport terminal, making friends with many of the airport employees, but becoming a thorn in the side of Frank Dixon, the man in charge of airport security. He kept tabs on what was happening in the former Krakozhia by watching the news on airport televisions. Who played the unfortunate, but always charming Viktor, in this Spielberg film?

Answer: Tom Hanks

Despite his less than pleasant circumstances, Viktor managed to make friends with a lot of people, helping them out with their problems. He even managed to play matchmaker for a pair of them, who ended up getting married. Catherine Zeta-Jones played the unrequited love interest, while Stanley Tucci played the head of security.
