In the opening scenes of the movie we see Beverly Weston, played by Sam Shepard, speaking to a woman with Native-American origins, played by Misty Upham, who is called Johnna. He hires her to take care of Violet. Violet has cancer and so is on heavy medication.

She is very rude to Beverly in this scene and says obscene things to him. Beverly later runs away only to be later found dead in a body of water. Beverly and Violet have three grown children, all girls, who return to their childhood home after they hear news of their father running away.

Answer: Ivy

She is the one who calls and tells her sister, Barbara, played by Julia Roberts, about their father running away. She comes home before the other two sisters and takes care of her mom. Violet is continually cruel to her, and mocks her appearance. Ivy is a kindhearted girl who falls in love with her supposed cousin in the movie. Violet asks her about her hair and why she doesn't wear makeup. Ivy also welcomes her aunt and uncle when they arrive at Violet's place. All this happens before the family finds out about the death of Beverly.

Answer: Because she is mean to their son

Chris Cooper plays the well mannered and often hilarious uncle, Charles. Violet tells Ivy that he smokes a lot of pot to keep up with the ways of his wife. Towards the end of the movie, Charles has a fight with his wife, Mattie Fae, who is played by Margo Martindale, because he thinks that his wife is very rude and mean to their son, Little Charles, and threatens to leave if she continues in that manner.

Bill, played by Ewan McGregor, is married to Barbara, the oldest of the three daughters of the Weston family. Barbara is played by Julia Roberts. He separated from her after he has an affair with a younger woman. Violet, during a feisty dinner scene, mocks this fact. Bill accompanies Barbara and Jean to Violet's home after Beverly runs away.

He and Barbara have a fight at the home and accept that there is no chance of reconciliation between them. Jean is played by Abigail Breslin.

Answer: In a sports car

Karen is played by Juliette Lewis and is one of Violet's daughters. She is said to have had many such affairs that didn't end so well. She tells everyone that she and Steve are engaged. During the amazing dinner scene, Violet mocks Steve's last name, Huberbrecht. Karen also receives a little trouble from Violet for bringing "a date" to her father's funeral. Steve is portrayed by Dermot Mulroney.

He is shown to be a wealthy business man and, in one scene, answers a phone call when Charles is saying grace, to everyone's annoyance.

Answer: He oversleeps.

He says this as a confession during a dinner scene at the family home. Little Charles is a very reserved and shy boy who Ivy is in love with. They keep this a secret from the rest of the family. Little Charles brings a casserole when he comes to Violet's place that he then drops on the floor, only for it to shatter.

He is treated badly by Mattie Fae and nicely by his father Charles. Charles defends his son to his wife in a fight which Barbara witnesses, after which she learns a family secret from Mattie Fae. Little Charles is portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Answer: Barbara tells everyone she is pregnant.

This dinner scene is a wonderful one with regards to the performances of all the actors. So many things happen in this scene alone, from Violet asking her daughters if they need any furniture, to Barbara knocking down Violet to get her pills from her. Charles also makes a joke at the expense of the young Jean saying that she is a vegetarian because she doesn't want to eat the fear of an animal. Little Charles is shown to almost express his love for Ivy during this scene.

At the end of it all, Barbara asks the family to help her raid the house for the pills that their mother has hidden.

Answer: Because she had a hysterectomy

She tells this to Barbara and Karen during a scene where they are reliving memories from their past. Barbara asks her if something is going on between her and Little Charles and Ivy tells them the truth. She is then asked about what she plans to do about children as he is their family.

She then proceeds to tell them that she can't have children because she had a hysterectomy. Also during this scene where the sisters talk to each other, they discuss about their future plans and what has happened in their life till then. Ivy tells her sisters that she and Charles plan to leave for New York.

Answer: A pair of boots

Violet says she wanted those boots to impress a boy named Raymond. She says that she asked her mother to get her a pair of boots that were just like the ones she thought Raymond would like. She then says that her mother teased her by giving her a present of dirty, worn out boots.

She says that this made her mother laugh very hard for a while. She says this to the girls after they see Violet sitting outside the house in a swing chair.

Answer: That Little Charles is their brother

She tells Barbara that he is their brother as she had an affair with their father Beverly. Ivy does not know this and continues to be in a relationship with Little Charles. Barbara, knowing the truth, tries to stop Ivy from telling Violet about her relationship with Little Charles.

But she is unsuccessful and before Ivy can tell her story to her mother, Violet blurts out that she knows that Little Charles is Beverly's son and therefore Ivy's brother. During this scene, Violet also screams out that she knows everything that goes on the household and that no one can keep anything from her. Ivy then leaves the house and promises never to come back again and Barbara chases after her.

At the very end of the movie, Violet is left alone with Johnna.
