Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How long has William Somerset been a police officer at the start of the film?

Answer: 34 years

And until the events of this film, Somerset had never in all those years drawn his weapon with the intent to fire it.
2. How long was David Mills a homicide detective before transferring to the NYPD?

Answer: 5 years

Somerset doesn't seem overly impressed, since Mills' experience was in upstate New York, not the city.
3. Mills' wife, Tracy, had been a teacher before they moved to the city. At what level were her students?

Answer: elementary school

Tracy tells Somerset that she taught 5th grade.
4. Kevin Spacey's name does not appear anywhere in the credits of this film.

Answer: false

His name does not appear in the *opening* credits, but Spacey's is the very first name we see in the closing credits.
5. What is John Doe's apartment number?

Answer: 604

Clearly visible on the door just before Mills kicks it in. (Incidentally, Fincher reveals on the DVD commentary that the logo used for 'Men In Black' -- a door being kicked open and two agents standing in the doorway -- was based on the shot of Mills' forced entry into Doe's apartment!)
6. Finish this quote from Somerset, as he describes the killer: 'He's methodical, exacting ... and worst of all, ____________.'

Answer: patient

We see this patience borne out in several of Doe's crimes.
7. John Doe punishes those guilty of commiting one of the seven deadly sins. The victim he goes after first is guilty of which sin?

Answer: sloth

The 'gluttony' victim was the first one found, but the 'sloth' victim had been held captive for an entire year.
8. What is the name of the SWAT team leader who leads the assault on the 'sloth' victim's apartment, and commands the helicopter support team at the end of the film?

Answer: California

California is played by character actor John C. McGinley.
9. David Mills' education seems to be informed more by popular culture than formal schooling. Which of the following points of discussion does Mills NOT reveal his utter ignorance of?

Answer: Sigmund Freud

Mills requires the 'Cliffs Notes' for 'Canterbury Tales'; he seems to think that 'Of Human Bondage' is about sexual bondage; and, most amusingly, he pronounces 'Marquis de Sade' as one pronounces singer Sade's name -- 'shah-DAY.' Freud is never discussed in the film.
10. Mills makes reference to a character from the 'Star Wars' films. Which one is it?

Answer: Yoda

Mills: 'Just because he's got a library card doesn't make him Yoda.'
11. Just as Somerset and Mills reach Doe's apartment, a frustrated Mills compares their current course of action to the silliness of a certain television show. Which show is it?

Answer: 'Charlie's Angels'

Almost immediately after Mills says this, it's revealed that Somerset's plan has not been quite so silly after all -- it has led them directly to John Doe.
12. The 'sloth' victim is called Victor, but the police captain (R. Lee Ermey) tells us that Victor is not the man's given name. What is?

Answer: Theodore

His real name is Theodore Allen. We're never told why he goes by a different name.
13. How many notebooks are found in John Doe's apartment?

Answer: 2000

Each book contains approximately 250 pages of rantings, scribblings, and photographs.
14. A receipt is found in John Doe's apartment. From what establishment did Doe get it?

Answer: Wild Bill's Leather Shop

It was at Wild Bill's that Doe purchased the device used to kill the 'lust' victim.
15. The writer of 'Se7en' has penned several other films as well. Which of the following did he NOT have a hand in writing?

Answer: 'Murder In the First'

Andrew Kevin Walker was not involved with 'Murder in the First.'
16. Somerset, to Mills: 'For the first time ever, you and I are in total agreement.' What is it that they are agreeing on?

Answer: that John Doe's surrender is not what it seems to be

The captain thinks that Doe's surrender means that everyone can relax, but both Somerset and Mills suspect that the surrender is all part of John Doe's plan...and they're right.
17. The police are able to turn up virtually zero information about John Doe, other than that he is independently wealthy and has no credit history. How long ago did Doe open his sole bank account?

Answer: 5 years

He opened the account with cash. It's never revealed where Doe got all that money, or even who he really was.
18. The actor playing John Doe's attorney went on to join the cast of which TV show?

Answer: 'The West Wing'

Richard Schiff won a Best Supporting Actor Emmy for playing White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler.
19. When John Doe surrenders to the NYPD, he is covered in the blood of several people. Who is NOT one of them?

Answer: the victim of the 'lust' murder

We're told that three separate blood samples have been found: that of the 'pride' murder victim (on whom Doe had used a knife), Doe's own blood (from slicing off his fingerprints), and an unidentified third party. We learn at the end of the film that David's wife Tracy was that unfortunate third party.
20. On what day of the week does the final scene take place?

Answer: Sunday

We see 'place cards' as each new day passes. The film starts on a Monday and ends on a Sunday. (Seven days. Get it?)
21. A delivery van arrives during the tense final sequence. What is the name of the delivery company?

Answer: Crosstown Express

The company logo is clearly visible on the side of the van.
22. What are John Doe's final words?

Answer: he didn't know

Doe is referring to the fact that Tracy hadn't told her husband that she was pregnant before Doe killed her. Mills subsequently shoots him...six times.
23. In the final moments of the film, Somerset quotes a famous man. Who is it?

Answer: Ernest Hemingway

Somerset: 'Ernest Hemingway once wrote, 'The world is a fine place, and worth fighting for.' I agree with the second part.'
24. Interestingly enough, John Doe did not actually kill all of the victims of his crimes. Which of the following people DID he kill?

Answer: the 'gluttony' victim

He mutilated the 'pride' victim, but left her alive -- she actually killed herself with an overdose of sleeping pills. The 'sloth' victim was brutally malnourished, but was quite alive when found by the police...although it's suggested that he might not live much longer. Doe killed the 'gluttony' victim by force-feeding him, then kicking the overstuffed large intestine until it burst, causing massive internal bleeding that led to his death.
25. One more for the road. If the point of John Doe's 'masterpiece' was indeed for seven people to die for committing each of the deadly sins, then by the film's end it was technically incomplete -- one 'sinner' was left alive. Which of the seven deadly sins did he or she commit?

Answer: wrath

By the time Doe surrenders, there are still two more sins that have yet to be featured among his crimes: envy and wrath. Doe's murder of Tracy Mills, he claims, made him guilty of envy, and he pays for that sin with his life when Mills kills him. But David, who has committed the final sin, wrath, is not killed for his transgression...although he may very well wish that he had been, considering his great loss.
