Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original film in this series of movies was released in 1979. It was a science fiction thriller, taking place on a space ship. All the crew was killed except one female character and her cat. The sequel was released in 1986. What was this classic sequel called?

Answer: "Aliens" (1986)

"Aliens" continues the story of Ripley. She once again is up against the slimy aliens, with acid for blood. She has a large group of space marines with her this time and, like the first film, the body count is high. The cat's name is Jonesy.
2. "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was released in 1979. It was based on a television show created by Gene Roddenberry. It was a box office success but the movie had bad pacing and little action. The sequel cranked up the action. Who plays Khan Noonien Singh in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (1982)? Khan is seeking revenge against Captain Kirk.

Answer: Ricardo Montalban

The first film's story takes place in the future. A space ship and its crew must try to stop a huge energy cloud from destroying Earth. Its sequel is about Khan trying to get revenge on Captain Kirk. Gene Roddenberry was the creator of the television series and Executive Producer of the first film.

He was squeezed out of producing the second film because the first film was considered lackluster.
3. This sequel was released in 1987. The original film was the biggest box-office hit of 1984. Which film series introduced us to the characters of Billy Rosewood, John Taggart and Andrew Bogomil?

Answer: "Beverly Hills Cop II" (1987)

The movies revolve around Axel Foley, a tough Detroit police officer. In "Beverly Hills Cop" (1984), he is looking for the killer of his good friend. This leads him to Beverly Hills, California. In the sequel, Axel helps try to solve a series of upscale store heists. Both films were successful and both had hit movie soundtracks.

A second sequel was released "Beverly Hills Cop III" (1994) and was a flop and downright unfunny.
4. In 1981, a low budget horror classic was released. It takes us deep in the woods of Tennessee. It tells the story of five college students who stumble upon a mysterious book. The sequel returns only two characters from the original film and tells a very similar story. What was the sequel released in 1987 titled?

Answer: "Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn: (1987)

The sequel was a little less low budget and featured over the top comedy elements. The film has our hero Ash and his girlfriend going to a cabin deep in the woods and stumbling upon the "Book of the Dead" again. Ash seems not to remember he's had this happen to him once already.

This film was originally going to take place in medieval times but the budget wasn't large enough. The third film "The Army of Darkness"(1992) picked the ancient story line up. A reboot was released in 2013 and it was quite good.
5. "Lethal Weapon" (1987) tells the story of Roger Murtaugh and Martin Riggs. Roger is about to retire and Martin is wild and has suicidal thoughts. The sequel revolves around protecting Leo Getz and the South African Consulate. Who plays the hilarious Leo Getz?

Answer: Joe Pesci

Leo Getz is under witness protection and has information about the South African Consulates shady dealings. Joe Pesci is perfect for the role and very funny. Martin is no longer suicidal and Roger still hasn't retired.
6. The original movie features a murderous mother avenging the death of her son. The mother is beheaded and the son, who wasn't really dead, picks up the killing in the sequel, released in 1981. It tells the story of a summer camp with a high dead body count. What sequel features a killer who wears a burlap sack over his head?

Answer: "Friday the 13th Part 2" (1981)

Pamela Voorhees was the killer in the original film. Her son Jason drowned at summer camp. She decided to avenge his death by killing camp counselors. She is killed and Jason is somehow not dead. He makes a brief appearance at the end of the first film. He kills the only survivor of the first film in the sequel. He doesn't start wearing his trademark hockey mask until part 3 (1982).
7. In 1988, an action film, "Die Hard", which introduced us to police officer John McClane, was released and was a box office hit. It took part mostly in a skyscraper. Its sequel took place in an airport and was disappointing to me. The third film "Die Hard with a Vengeance" (1995) was a return to form and took place mostly in New York city. It co-starred Samuel L. Jackson. What was Mr. Jackson's character's first name in this film? Hint it was a Greek god.

Answer: Zeus

Zeus was the only Greek god listed, the other gods were Roman gods. In "Die Hard with a Vengeance" (1995), John McClane and Zeus try to stop a terrorist, who has them completing tasks all around New York. Which is just a decoy for what he's really up to.
8. "Fright Night" (1985) and its lesser-known sequel "Fright Night II" (1988), tell the story of Charley Brewster and his run-ins with real live vampires. In both films he enlists an old horror movie actor Peter Vincent to help him out. Peter Vincent starred in films where he was a vampire killer. He hosts a late night television show called "Fright Night". Who plays Peter Vincent?

Answer: Roddy McDowall

In the original film, high school student Charlie Brewster enlists Peter Vincent to help him kill a vampire, who lives next door. Of course Peter Vincent isn't a real vampire killer but they somehow pull it off. The sequel has Charlie Brewster in college. Charlie has been going to psychiatric therapy and believes that vampires don't really exist. Do they really exist? You'll have to watch this hidden gem to find out.

There was a reboot in 2011, which was rather good also.
9. Long before "American Pie" (1999), another raunchy high school comedy was released. It featured characters with nicknames such as Meat, Pee-Wee, Lassie and Beulah Ballbreaker. What was this film's rather funny sequel called, which was released in 1983?

Answer: "Porky's II: The Next Day" (1983)

"Porky's" (1982) , was critically panned but very profitable. It told the story of a group of high school students and their many adventures. Porky's is a strip club the underage teens sneak into. I cannot explain any of the nicknames, without being vulgar.

The sequel picks up the story the very next day after the original films end. The story this time revolves around putting on a school play. Sadly Lassie doesn't return for the sequel, she was played by Kim Cattrall.
10. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981), introduced us to the character Indiana Jones. "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" (1984) was technically a prequel. "Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade" (1989) was a sequel. In this movie we are introduced to Indiana's father and a younger version of Indiana, in a flashback sequence. Which actors play Indiana's father and a young Indiana Jones?

Answer: Sean Connery and River Phoenix

All the movies are action-packed and based on the idea of film serials of the 1930s. They were often short, action-filled and ended with cliffhangers. In the first film, Indiana is looking for the Ark of the Covenant. In the second film, he's looking for the Sankara stones.

In "Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade", he is looking for the the Holy Grail. Sean Connery is most famous for playing James Bond several times. River Phoenix was an up-and-coming young actor. He died at the young age of twenty-three.
