Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which famous acting duo play Holmes and Watson, respectively?

Answer: Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce

Rathbone and Bruce starred as our dynamic duo in 14 movies from 1939-1946. "The House of Fear" was the 10th movie in the series and was released in 1945.
2. Our story begins with the visit of an insurance agent to Holmes and Watson at Baker Street. The man tells a strange tale of a club of retired men living at the grim, old ancestoral house (called Drearcliff) of one of their members. What is the name of the club that the men call themselves?

Answer: The Good Comrades

"The Good Comrades" consist of seven men surnamed Merrivale, Cosgrave, Captain Simpson, King, Rayburn, Davis and Alistair.
3. The insurance agent tells Holmes and Watson that one of the members of the club (King) received an envelope at dinner a few weeks before. What did the envelope contain?

Answer: Orange pips (seeds)

King received an envelope containing seven orange pips (seeds.) The other club members were at dinner with him and they all found it funny. The night after King received the envelope at dinner, he died a horrible death. While the club members were mourning his death, another envelope arrived for the man named Rayburn.

In the envelope were six orange pips (the number of surviving members.) He was found dead ten days later.
4. The Good Comrades all have large insurance policies and the insurance agent is concerned that a member of the club is killing the other members, one by one, to get the insurance money. Holmes and Watson take the case and head for Drearcliff House. On arriving, they go to a pub and talk to the local tabacconist named McGregor. He tells them of an old saying about Drearcliff; "No man ever goes whole to his grave." Holmes and Watson move on to Drearcliff House and, upon arriving, learn that another of the club members has just been found dead. Which one?

Answer: Davis

Holmes and Watson arrive to find that the Good Comrade named Davis has been found burnt to a crisp in the furnace. That makes three men dead and all in mutilated ways that don't allow for physical identification. Davis is identified by his cufflinks. Holmes goes to the female servant at Drearcliff after deducing that Davis, who wasn't at dinner that night, couldn't have received the envelope with the orange pips.

The servant, Mrs. Montiff, has the envelope, now containing five orange pips.
5. By this time, Inspector Lestrade has arrived on the scene. Only four members of the club are now still alive (Cosgrave, Merrivale, Simpson and Alistair). Which of these four men is the next to get the envelope at dinner?

Answer: Cosgrave

Cosgrave gets an envelope with four orange pips and he feels that his time has come. Merrivale stays with Cosgrave in his room that night, with Holmes on watch. Watson is attacked downstairs, which brings Holmes running. In the confusion, Merrivale is knocked out and Cosgrave vanishes.

A tremendous explosion is heard and Holmes and company run outside. Apparently, Cosgrave has been partially blown up with dynamite, in a shed outside, and a body found in the area wears Cosgrave's ring.
6. We're down to three Good Comrades and Captain Simpson is stressed by the whole thing. He's even more stressed when he's the next to get the envelope (containing three orange pips) at dinner. Holmes and Watson go outside to look for clues and, despite the best efforts of Inspector Lestrade, Simpson disappears. A torso is found with the legs, arms and head all missing, yet it's identified as Simpson. How?

Answer: A tattoo on the torso's chest

Simpson has a full rigged ship tattooed on his chest (he showed it to Holmes earlier). Simpson is the fifth body found so mutilated that it can't be physically identified.
7. Only two Good Comrades are left now (Merrivale and Alistair.) Holmes, Watson, Lestrade, Merrivale and Alistair sit at dinner when an envelope arrives...for Inspector Lestrade. Lestrade is stunned, expecting orange pips. Holmes opens it and proclaims, "So sorry old fellow. No orange pips." The envelope contains a message from the tobacconist, McGregor. McGregor wants them to come to his shop. Holmes and Lestrade go and find McGregor shot dead. The next night, Holmes talks to a sailor who delivered McGregor's message to Drearcliff. The sailor tells Holmes a question McGregor asked him. What was it?

Answer: "Do you believe in ghosts?"

McGregor was on the beach outside of Drearcliff House and saw something, something he pondered as a "ghost". But McGregor doesn't believe in ghosts and is suspicious of what he's seen. He writes a letter to Inspector Lestrade but the killer intercepts it before it gets to Lestrade and Holmes. McGregor is killed for what he has seen.
8. Holmes is locked onto the saying, "No man ever goes whole to his grave," as a big key to the mystery. That leads him to suspect that something is going to happen to McGregor's body. McGregor is buried that day and Holmes and Watson go to check out his grave. What do they find?

Answer: McGregor's body is missing.

Holmes and Watson engage in some well intentioned ghoulishness in digging up McGregor's coffin and find that the body is missing. Holmes knows that the body is going to be used for a specific purpose by the killer.
9. Upon returning to Drearcliff House, Holmes and Lestrade are informed that Merrivale has been found dead, crushed under a huge boulder. He has been identified by his watch. Only Alistair is left and that's all Lestrade and Watson need. Alistair is arrested for all six murders of the Good Comrades. Holmes is unconvinced. Acting on a hypothesis, he measures the footage of the area of the house near the fireplace. What does he find there?

Answer: A secret passage

Holmes checks the layout of the area for a secret passage. He knows who is reponsible for the deaths of the Good Comrades and knows that that the guilty party is hiding somewhere in Drearcliff House. He finds the secret passage next to the fireplace.

In the excitement, Watson has now disappeared and Holmes is convinced that he's been taken into the secret passage by the killer. Holmes and Lestrade walk down an old staircase and find a hidden room.
10. The Good Comrades are all alive and well.

Answer: True

The six "dead" Good Comrades are all alive and hiding in the secret room in the secret passage. They have faked their own deaths to get their hands on the insurance money and they have framed Alistair for the murders. When one of them has needed to be "killed", they go and get a dead body from the village and mutilate it so that it can't be identified (thus, "No man ever goes whole to his grave.") Holmes notices that the ship tattooed on Simpson's "corpse" is recent and can't be Captain Simpson's. McGregor saw one of the "dead" Good Comrades on the beach one night and pondered the idea of ghosts. Knowing that Good Comrade are alive, McGregor tries to inform Lestrade.

The note is intercepted and Captain Simpson shoots McGregor to death. The Comrades then dig up McGregor's body and use it as Merrivale's "dead" body. Holmes finds Watson tied up by the villainous Comrades. Watson has learned that the villains were about to leave on a ship offshore but they're now headed for the dock instead of wealth and freedom.
