Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Working for Moriarty, Irene Adler delivers a package to a man at an auction. Guessing that the package contains a bomb, Holmes stops the man from opening it. However the man activates a secondary mechanism and Holmes must dispose of the bomb. How does he do this?

Answer: He puts it into a sarcophagus.

One of the items at the auction is an Egyptian sarcophagus which has its lid propped open, presumably so the contents can be viewed. Holmes tosses the bomb into the sarcophagus and closes the lid. The stone casket absorbs the impact of the blast, releasing only smoke. Later Holmes passes the man who was the target of the bomb on the street, killed by a dart, which has presumably been dipped in poison.
2. Adler must explain to Moriarty why her chore has not been successfully carried out. Justifiably frightened of the man, she has arranged to meet him in a very public place, her favourite restaurant. What does Moriarty do to her?

Answer: He poisons her tea.

Introduced in "Sherlock Holmes" (2009) Irene Adler is a woman with not afraid of breaking the law and who has a romantic history with Holmes. When she sits down at the table there is a pot of tea waiting for her but she asks the waiter to bring her a fresh pot. Moriarty does not accept her excuse for her failed mission and declares her to not be of any use to him because she has succumbed to her feelings for Holmes.

At this point she eyes the second pot of tea fearfully. Moriarty scorns her choice of meeting place, and, as a demonstration of his power, rings a bell to have everyone in the restaurant get up and leave. Thus there is no one to witness her dying, except he himself.

She manages to walk a few steps before succumbing to the poison. Moriarty takes her handkerchief before leaving.
3. Who makes the observation, "Your hedge needs trimming."?

Answer: John Watson

Watson arrives at 221B Baker Street, looking for Holmes. When he enters Holmes' room, he finds it full of plants, some of which are partially blocking his entrance. Using his cane, he pushes one of the fronds out of his way and makes the above remark.

As he proceeds further into the room, he sees a number of animals, but no Holmes. A dart flies across the room and becomes imbedded in his coat; a second dart follows. Wearing what he refers to as "urban camouflage" Holmes steps away from the wall he is hiding against and claims a victory against Watson.
4. It is the eve of Watson's wedding and, as part of his duties as best man, Holmes is expected to organize a stag party for Watson. Whom, among Watson's friends, has Holmes invited?

Answer: Nobody

Holmes has completely forgotten his duties, of course, but is unwilling to admit this. Travelling in Holmes' motorcar, Holmes and Watson arrive at a club where the only other guest is Holmes' almost equally eccentric brother, Mycroft. When Watson questions where his mates from the above mentioned groups are, Holmes makes excuses for each, implying that he invited them but they declined to come. Watson is not fooled and leaves Holmes to play cards. Holmes meets with Simza Heron, a gypsy woman.
5. What does Holmes' brother, Mycroft, call him?

Answer: Shirley

Like his younger brother, Mycroft is a very smart man, who also has a fair share of eccentricities. We hear him call his younger brother Shirley at several points throughout the movie, including at the alleged stag party. Surprisingly Holmes does not seem to take any offence at the name.
According to the books, Mycroft advises the government on international relations and while this is not spelled out in the movie, what you see him doing in the film is consistent with this.
6. Who does Holmes meet with shortly after Watson's wedding?

Answer: Professor Moriarty

Holmes manages to get a very hung-over and dishevelled looking Watson to the church on time for his wedding. Afterwards Holmes goes out to his car and finds one of Moriarty's men, Colonel Moran, who tells him that Moriarty wants to meet with him. Holmes goes to the university where the professor is found preparing for a lecture tour.

They discuss a number of things, including Moriarty's intentions to target Watson and the new Mrs. Watson. Moriarty also displays Irene Adler's handkerchief, telling Holmes that she succumbed to a rare form of TB, in a matter of minutes.

This is the first time that Holmes learns of her death.
7. Where does Holmes send Mary Watson, to keep her safe?

Answer: To his brother's place

Watson and Mary board the train bound for Brighton, where they intend to honeymoon. Holmes, in disguise as a woman, is also on the train and is able to keep them alive, despite the best efforts of the men that Moriarty has sent to kill them. At one point Holmes throws Mary off the train, while they are on a bridge over water.

He keeps telling the outraged Watson that he "timed it perfectly". She lands safely in the water where Mycroft is waiting in a small boat to take her to his home; there she learns firsthand how eccentric he is!
8. Hunting down Simza, the gypsy woman Holmes spoke with earlier in the movie (about her missing brother), they piece together that there is to be another bombing. Distracted by false clues, they do not discover the real location of the bomb until it is too late. What, do they learn, is the real purpose of the bombing?

Answer: To disguise the assassination of the owner of a munitions factory

Examining the scene of the bombing, which occurs at a meeting of businessmen, they notice that one of the victims has been shot in the head. They discover the spot where the assassin made his shot from and even determine, from the difficulty of the shot, who the gunman likely is.

They determine that the man who is shot, Meinhard, was the owner of a German munitions factory, a company that Moriarty has bought stocks in. With the death of Meinhard, Moriarty becomes the principal owner of the company.
9. To whom or what is Holmes referring when he pronounces them "dangerous at both ends and crafty in the middle"?

Answer: Horses

Having determined that the German munitions factory is where they need to go, they need to find a way into the country. Because of the bombing, the regular border crossings are more heavily guarded than normal. The gypsies inform them that they know another way, and provide horses for them to ride. Holmes is obviously very afraid of horses and gives this assessment.

The issue is resolved by putting Holmes on a small pony instead.
10. Why is Moriarty trying to start a war?

Answer: To make money

In a face to face conversation with Holmes (who has been captured and hung by a hook imbedded in his shoulder), Moriarty admits that his whole motivation behind starting a war is to amass a fortune because he controls 'the guns and bandages'. Watson rescues Holmes, but Moriarty manages to make his escape and our friends still have to figure out a way to stop him. We find later in the movie that even while being tortured on the hook, Holmes manages to exchange a duplicate book for a little red book that Moriarty always carries.

This gives them information that helps bring an end to some of Moriarty's plans.
11. While on a cargo train out of Germany, while having his wounds stitched by Watson, Holmes dies but is brought back to life.

Answer: True

Holmes stops breathing and his heart stops. Watson tries to bring Holmes back to life through compressing his heart but is unsuccessful. Distraught, he begins pounding on Holmes' chest but Simza stops him. Then Watson remembers the wedding present that Holmes had given him much earlier - a vial of adrenaline. Holmes had been experimenting on the effects of adrenaline. Watson injects this into Holmes' chest and it produces the desired effect.
12. Holmes, Watson and Simza determine that Simza's brother is being forced to participate in an assassination attempt. How is he going to gain entrance to the peace conference where it is scheduled to occur?

Answer: He has been surgically changed to look like one of the ambassadors.

They determine fairly early on that her brother will be involved and the pieces fall into place. Watson has noticed marks behind the ears of some of Moriarty's men, which he interprets as practice surgery. They also remember that the man killed much earlier, after the auction, was a doctor experimenting in the art of surgical reconstructions and conclude that he was the surgeon involved and his murder was the result of Moriarty tying up a loose end.
Not only does the surgical alteration guarantee his entry, but it makes it look as though one country's ambassador has killed another country's representative, an act guaranteed to start a war.
At the peace conference, attempts are made to determine which man Simza's brother has been altered to resemble.
13. At the peace conference, while looking for the assassin, Holmes first dances with Simza and then with Watson. When asked, whom does Watson say taught him how to dance?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

Watson and Holmes dance around the room, searching the faces of the men around them, trying to determine which one is Simza's brother. Interestingly enough, this behaviour doesn't seem to draw any attention from the crowd. After the music ends, Holmes asks Watson who taught him to dance. Watson replies, "You did."
14. The end scene of the movie finds Watson writing what he believes will be the last "Sherlock Holmes" story. In it he includes a eulogy to the great man, presumed dead. What does Watson receive, by parcel, that makes him believe that Holmes might not be dead?

Answer: Mycroft's breathing apparatus

Earlier in the movie we see Sherlock pick up this strange apparatus and ask what it is. Mycroft says that it is his own, personal supply of air and Sherlock is to put it down. When Moriarty and Holmes struggle, Holmes concludes that, because of his injuries, he is going to lose. So he takes Moriarty with him, over the balcony, to the waterfall below. We learn from Watson's story that the bodies were not found.

The delivery of the breathing apparatus gives Watson hope that Holmes had a way of keeping from drowning.
15. Twice in the movie we see Holmes disguised in what he refers to as "urban camouflage". The first time is in his room when, wearing a suit coloured to blend in with the wall behind him, he manages to shoot an unsuspecting Watson with a dart. When and where is the second time?

Answer: At the end of the movie in Watson's house

As Watson is finishing up the book his wife, Mary, is encouraging him to pack for their delayed honeymoon. She brings the parcel in and puts it on Watson's desk and eventually leaves. When Watson opens it, he leaves to see if he can catch the delivery boy, to see if there was more information to be gathered or if he might even be Holmes.

After he leaves the room we see Holmes, wearing an outfit to make him blend in with the chair in the room, get up, remove the headpiece of his disguise and read what Watson has just written.

After Watson's words, 'The End', Holmes adds a question mark.
