Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the trial, how did Michael agree to get in touch with Shakes?

Answer: leave him a phone message at his office from imaginary girlfriend "Gloria".

Michael knew that he as playing a very dangerous game. By taking this case, he was signing on to work both sides, the prosecution and the defense. Somehow he must bring in a character witness that would open the door to their time at Wilkenson without anyone realizing what he was up to.
2. After an offer to finance the best lawyer for John and Tommy's defense, King Benny's mind was changed on Michael's advice. What was the name of the lawyer he hired instead?

Answer: Danny Snyder

Danny Snyder was at best, a third rate lawyer, a drunk and he had a drug problem. He was useless as a lawyer, however, he was perfect for reading verbatum, the questions that Michael prepared for him to ask. Michael needed to expose Wilkenson and the abuse the suffered there. That would be the way to get back at each and every one of the guards. Finally, all the files he had kept for years on these men, were going to be of use.

As he told Shakes, the only way to get John and Tommy acquitted was to put theme somewhere else, for the time of the murder.

They needed a witness.
3. Who were the eye witnesses to the actual murder?

Answer: the men at the bar and Mr. & Mrs. Salinas.

As long as these witnesses testified, John and Tommy were finished. They had to have King Benny's help in one way or another. Firstly, he had to get the word out to John and Tommy's crew in Hell's Kitchen to leave Michael alone. Once they found out he took the case against his friends, he was a marked man.
4. What was King Benny doing in the park, while Shakes sat next to him on the bench?

Answer: feeding pigeons

King Benny informed Shakes that the "suits at the bar" changed their minds about testifying and that Michaels questions to the Salinas' were aimed at discrediting them. But........they still needed a witness to put John and Tommy in another location for the key time.
5. Who did Shakes have in mind for the key witness for the defense?

Answer: Father Robert Carillo

Shakes met Carol, who never was told of the abuse they suffered at Wilkenson, and together they went to see Father Bobby. Shakes knew that he had to tell Father Bobby every horrible abuse they endured in order to allow him to make a fair decision about being a witness, and he did. Carol stood by and listened, in shock.
6. With the plan being put into motion, Shakes met with King Benny's nephew who was with IAD. He gave him information about Adam Styler, a former Wilkenson guard who was now a policeman. What was King Benny's nephew's name?

Answer: Frank Marchico

During this meeting Shakes showed Marchico pictures of Adam Styler doing actual drug deals. Iron clad evidence that could be used not only to evict him from the police force without pension, but to prosecute him.
7. During the meeting with Marchico, Shakes produced a gun in a plastic bag, with Adam Styler's fingerprints on it. Who had been killed with that very gun?

Answer: Indian Red Lopez

Adam Styler was soon going to be in the hands of Internal Affairs, now there were two other former Wilkenson guards to deal with. Ralph Ferguson was a sunday school teacher and Addison worked in the mayor's office. Addison's sexual tastes hadn't changed, he also had a gambling problem and owed a great deal of money.
8. Who first bought Addison's debts, and how much were they?

Answer: King Benny; $8000

King Benny knew he had to sell this debt. He decided on someone to whom it would mean a great deal, and to have Addison in his debt. After looking into Addison's current job in the Mayor's office and his deplorable habits, King Benny realized his habits had not changed much from his time as a guard at Wilkenson.
9. After weeks passed with no word from Father Bobby as to whether he would be a witness or not, what did Fat Moncho say the witness was playing on them?

Answer: a Claude Raines

Shakes was deeply worried that Father Bobby would not agree to perjure himself, even for the reasons that he agonized over hearing that night. His boys. Shakes went to light candles and pray and could not help having flashbacks of the abuse he endured at the guards hands, at Wilkenson.

When he attended mass and received Communion one Sunday and looked up, it was into Father Bobby's eyes.
10. In court, as Danny Snyder was interrogating Mrs. Salinas about seeing the faces of the killers, what was the term she used that he picked up on and constantly repeated, therefore making her testimony about seeing the killer's faces, less credible?

Answer: that she glanced at them

Snyder was incompetent but he could read and Michael was the brains and author of each question he was asking. Michael was prosecutor and defense lawyer during this trial and he was wonderful at both.
11. What was "Little Caesare's" real name?

Answer: Edward Goldenberg Robinson

As King Benny sat across from this drug lord, Little Caesare, he asked him for $8,000. Little Caesare knew of King Benny's reputation and remembered him from the old days when the Mafia ran Hell's Kitchen. He automatically told his bodyguard to get the $8,000, he respected the King but was curious as to why he asked him for $8,000. King Benny told him that this debt belonged to someone named Addison.

When Little Caesare looked puzzled and asked who Addison was. King Benny replied "he's the man who killed your brother". Little Caesare said he was told by Wilkensons that his younger brother Rizzo had died of pnemounia.

They had lied.
12. What was the date and time the murder was to have taken place?

Answer: November 1; 8:25PM

John and Tommy sat in the court watching Michael and their lawyer Danny Snyder and they became more and more confused about what was going on. Michael got up and joked with the jury, established comraderie with them. Snyder seemed forgetful and disoriented most of the time but the questions coming out of his mouth, were brilliant, they thought.

Then they looked up and and heard Michael calling Ralph Ferguson to the stand as a character witness, for the victim, Sean Nokes.
13. When Michael was through cross examining Ralph Ferguson, Snyder rose. After asking surface questions about their friendship, he was able to approach the circumstances of how they met as guards at Wilkenson's Home for Boys. After establishing that occasionally the boys were "hit" for disciplinary reasons, what question did Snyder ask that made everyone in court look up, and made Michael realize his plan was working?

Answer: Were the boys also tortured?

After admitting that he, Ferguson, and also Sean Nokes, were among those guards who were responsible for the mistreatment of boys at the school, he began weeping on the stand. Michael needed to open the door to Wilkenson while at the same time discredit the victim Sean Nokes.

It was done and the judge called the attorneys to the stand. Michael for reprimanded for opening a Pandora's box that the prosecution could not now escape from. Michael humbly bowed his head and took the responsibility for making that mistake.
14. The judge was ready to end the trial and give it to the jury when Snyder called his last witness to the stand, Father Robert Carillo. John and Tommy looked up in amazement. After being sworn in, he went on to say how long he had known the defendants. When the Father was asked where he was on the night of November 1, at around 8:25PM, where did he say he was and when questioned further, who did he say he was with?

Answer: a Knicks vs. Celtics game at Madison Square Garden; John Reilly and Thomas Marcano

Once Shakes had told him of the torture and rape that the boys had endured at Wilkenson, as a priest and their mentor he felt that he did not have any choice but to testify. Then Michael rose to cross examine the priest and asked how he had paid for the tickets - he said he always paid in cash.
15. When Michael concluded that therefore there wasn't any proof that they were at the game, no receipt, no charge bill, what did Father Carillo produce that was iron clad proof?

Answer: 3 ticket stubs from that game at the Garden

Father Carillo shocked Michael and therefore, the prosecution, needless to say, John and Tommy who were dumbfounded. That afternoon, King Benny had made sure his bodyguard had placed the priceless stubs in a prayer book on one of the rear pews in Holy Angels.
16. Once John and Tommy were acquitted of the murder of Sean Nokes, the group of friends decided to meet for dinner. Carol was the only woman there and once they were done they all spoke about when they used to sing on the corner. What was the name of their group?

Answer: The Four Gladiators

As they sat around the table they were remembering a happier time. A time when they were all whole, before Wilkenson and life had changed them forever. They never saw each other again after that night.
17. What was the song they sang at the table together?

Answer: Walk Like A Man

The laughter echoed among them and you could almost hear their voices as children in the school auditorium as they danced and played basketball together.
18. Where did Michael Sullivan go and what did he become?

Answer: the English countryside, a carpenter

Michael satisfied his every desire by avenging what he and his friends went through so long ago at Wilkenson's. The very men that were supposed to be protecting them, abused and tortured them. He no longer believed in the law.
19. How did John Reilly die, when, and how old was he?

Answer: from drinking boiler gin, 3/16/84, 29 years old

John's death was inevitable. After Wilkenson, nothing could have saved him.
20. When they found the body of Thomas Marcano, shot 5 times, at 29, what did he have in his pocket?

Answer: a crucifix and a picture of St. Jude

All for that one terrible mistake as young boys and all their lives might have been so profoundly different........or maybe, the same.
