Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does Jamal meet Latika for the first time?

Answer: On a riot-affected street of Mumbai

The young Jamal and his elder brother Salim lose their mother in a communal riot in Mumbai. They try to flee to save their lives. While they run through the narrow lanes of Mumbai to find a safe place to hide from the attackers, the brothers see Latika standing on the road and a man near them is being set on fire by a group of rioters. Jamal then asks Latika to come with them if she wants to live.
2. During their childhood days under Maman's supervision, what does Latika once do to trick Salim and have fun?

Answer: She puts red chillies under Salim's blanket.

The children at Maman's are shown sleeping on the ground during the summer. Latika and one of her friends collect some red chillies and put them under Salim's blanket while he is sleeping. Soon, Salim wakes up in pain and runs towards the shower to soothe himself while the other children, woken up by Salim's shriek, begin to laugh and make fun of him.
3. What prop does Latika use while begging at the traffic signals?

Answer: An eye-patch

Maman runs a racket on the pretext of an orphanage which makes the street-children beg on the streets of Mumbai. In order to earn more money, Maman's gangmen are shown to make some children physically deformed so that their appearance evokes sympathy from the passers-by. Jamal, Salim and Latika are also forced into this crime.

However, none of them are physically harmed. Latika is shown in the film begging at the traffic signals of Mumbai wearing an eye-patch on her right eye. Thankfully, both her eyes remain unharmed.
4. What name is given to the adolescent Latika when she is being trained as a sex-worker?

Answer: Cherry

Maman wants to earn money by pushing Latika into the flesh-trade. He confines Latika in a rented house at Pila Street, a part of the red light area of Mumbai, and employs several people to train and teach her music and dance.
5. Which programme is being telecast on television when Latika is alone at Javed's residence and Jamal goes there as a dishwasher to meet her?

Answer: Who Wants To Be A Millionaire

The popular television series "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" has been used in the film. Scenes of this programme are shown many times, even when Jamal is not shown competing in the game-show himself, which is the main plot of the film.
6. What food item does Latika make for Javed when he comes back and says that he is hungry?

Answer: A vegetable sandwich

Javed is shown as the local don of the slum where Salim and Jamal spend their childhood. Later on, when Javed emerges as a powerful mafia don in Mumbai, Salim becomes a conman of Javed and Latika becomes Javed's kept girl. Latika is shown living in Javed's apartment when Jamal comes there and sees her. Soon, Javed comes back and drives Jamal out of his house because he believes that Jamal is a dishwasher and has not performed his duties well.
7. When Jamal opts for the "phone-a-friend" helpline at the game-show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", he provides the number to his brother's cell-phone, but instead of his brother at Javed's hideout, Latika receives the call in the middle of busy streets of Mumbai. Why?

Answer: Salim has given Latika his cell-phone when she is running away.

When Salim understands that Latika is really in love with his brother, Jamal, he decides to help her run away from Javed despite knowing the fact that he could be killed by Javed's henchmen for this "betrayal". When Latika is about to leave Javed's building, Salim hands her over his cell-phone, probably out of compassion, concern and sympathy.
8. After winning the game-show, Jamal is shown sitting alone at the railway station around midnight when he suddenly notices Latika standing on another platform at the station and looking for him. Jamal goes near Latika and confesses his love for her. In this scene, Latika wears a scarf around her head and face. What is the colour of the scarf that Latika wears?

Answer: Yellow

While running away from Javed's residence, Latika covers her head and face with a yellow embroidered scarf (better known as "Odhni" in India). The Odhnis are traditional Indian accesories to be worn with the Salwar, a fashionable Indian apparel for the ladies. We can presume that Latika must have worn a scarf at night to hide her identity from Javed's men, and also to hide the scar on her face which is created by Javed's henchmen when she tries to escape after being caught by them at the railway station.
9. It's the last scene of the film. Jamal walks upto Latika, standing on an empty railway platform, and embraces her. Jamal says to her - "This is our destiny". What Latika says in return is the last spoken sentence by any character of the film before the closing credits. What does she say finally?

Answer: "Kiss me"

Jamal says to Latika that he knew she would be watching the game-show. Latika says that she thought they could "meet only in death". Then Jamal embraces her and says that it is their destiny which has helped them meet and part only to meet over and over again. Latika then urges Jamal to kiss her.

The frame freezes and the end credits roll on up the screen with Jamal and Latika shown dancing on the platform with a bunch of extras to the tunes of "Jai Ho", the Oscar-winning number composed in a typical "Bollywood"-ish style by A.R. Rahman.
10. A musical question to end with: Though the background score of the film is mostly fast-paced, a slow, soft and melodious tune is distinctly played in the background, whenever Latika is on-screen or being talked about. It is composed by the multiple Academy Awards winner, composer A.R. Rahman. The question is, what is the name of this musical piece in the "Slumdog Millionaire" soundtrack?

Answer: Latika's Theme

The track "Latika's Theme" in the "Slumdog Millionaire" soundtrack has been composed by A.R. Rahman, the multiple Oscar winner composer from India and performed by Suzanne D'Mello, an Indian vocalist who has performed songs in several Hindi and Tamil film-songs. The length of "Latika's Theme" is three minutes and nine seconds.
