Thomas's parents were killed in a house fire when he was an infant, he was saved only by being tossed out of the window and caught by Victor's father Arnold Joseph. Victor was also an infant at the time, and Arnold had also saved him from the house fire...making it two lives he saved and two lives he had taken away. Arnold had accidentally started the fire...

2. What is unusual about the car driven by Velma and Lucy?

Answer: It only goes in reverse

Velma and Lucy meet Victor and Thomas as they walk toward town to catch the bus to Arizona. There is never an explanation as to why the car is 'broken'. Maybe it really isn't broken and they're just having fun?

Her big chance was to come in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, but the American Olympic boycott announced by Jimmy Carter kept her home. Victor poo-poos this argument by reminding her that she was an alternate on the Olympic team and would never have gone to Moscow anyway.

Miraculously, she was able to make the 50 pieces become 100...by tearing them in half! Another funny Thomas quote from earlier in that scene..."The only thing worse than Indians on TV is Indians watching Indians on TV!"

The basketball is very significant to the story, as basketball is a motif throughout the film. Who can forget Arnold's wonderful story about Victor's shot that beat the Jesuits during their basketball game? Of course he created a different outcome for the story, but the message is love from father to son.
