Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hi! I'm ElusiveDream. One of my favourite movies concerns a wealthy entrepreneur who spends five years building a nature reserve on a small tropical island. As the reserve nears completion, he invites his lawyer, his two grandchildren and a handful of other scientists to visit the reserve before its official opening to the public. There's just one catch: the visitors aren't told exactly what they're going to be seeing. What movie is this?

Answer: Jurassic Park

It's "Jurassic Park"! The inhabitants of this particular nature reserve are live dinosaurs, so it's no surprise that the visitors get a bit of a shock during their first encounter with an enormous brachiosaurus. However, their excitement soon turns to fear when a nerdy computer programmer switches off the power in an attempt to steal dinosaur embryos from the lab. The result: a pair of velociraptors and a hungry T-Rex escape from their enclosures.

Most memorable scene: The T-Rex eating the lawyer off the toilet.
2. Hey, I'm FrizzoLizzo! One of my favourite movies is about a powerful alien artifact which is in the current possession of a top-secret research project. When the artifact is stolen by a villain thought dead, the director of a secret government division must unite a team of unique people in an effort to take back the artifact from the villain's possession. Along the way, the team's differences are exploited and they turn amongst themselves and start to argue, but when the Earth needs them the most, they are able to put aside their differences and save the world from evil, through teamwork, hi-tech gadgetry, and a whole lot of butt-kicking! What movie is this?

Answer: The Avengers

It's "The Avengers"! Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye aim to take back the Tesseract from Thor's mischievous brother, Loki. With Loki trying to turn them all against each other, they are united through their sense of duty to the world and the sacrifices of others for the cause and ultimately manage to defeat Loki and his alien Chitauri army, and become Earth's mightiest heroes!

Most memorable scene: Loki screaming "Kneeeeeeeeeeeeel" to a terrified group of Germans.
3. I'm kimbwitchn, and one of my all-time favourite movies is about a young woman who marries her schoolteacher. She's not happy in her marriage and has a torrid affair with a military man from a military organization that is much hated by the young woman's countrymen. Her lover dies toward the end of the movie and she and her husband leave town to escape the shame of her affair. What movie is this?

Answer: Ryan's Daughter

"Ryan's Daughter" stars Sarah Miles, Robert Mitchum, Christopher Jones, Trevor Howard and John Mills. It is loosely based on Flaubert's novel "Madame Bovary". The movie is set in Ireland during WWI but because of bad weather, some of the beach scenes were filmed in South Africa. "Ryan's Daughter" didn't get very good reviews when it was released, but enough romantics like me loved the movie that it grossed $31 million with a production cost of $13.3 million. Since its original release, some critics have reconsidered the movie and called it an "overlooked masterpiece." It won two Academy Awards (John Mills, Best Supporting Actor as the "village idiot" and Freddie Young, Best Cinematography) and was nominated for two more. If you haven't seen "Ryan's Daughter", check it out!
4. Sparrow1138. One of my all-time favourite films is an early George Lucas science fiction film that was first released in 1971 starring Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence. This futuristic film depicts a future world in which the population is controlled through android police officers and mandatory use of drugs, and relationships are strictly forbidden. Which movie is this?

Answer: THX 1138

This film was re-released in 2004 with the extended director's cut. A Blu-Ray version was released in 2010. It is a cult classic with science fiction fans.
Several bands have also paid homage to the film over the decades: Queen, Peter Gabriel, Toto and Daft Punk.
5. Hi, tttxyv here. One of my favourite movies, an iconic one by George Lucas, is set dominantly in space. A class of warriors armed with glowing swords fight to protect their galaxy from evil. In this movie, the main character nearly dies in a fiery fight before being resurrected as a cyborg at the end of the movie. What movie is this?

Answer: Star Wars

"Star Wars" is correct! "Star Wars" 4, 5, and 6 were actually made before 1, 2, and 3! Many people know and love "Star Wars" because it is an iconic movie for sci-fi fans and movie-watchers alike.
6. Greetings from Scotland...I am Ankhsunamun. My favourite movie is now a cult classic, so here goes. This film starred Peter Weller, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow and Ellen Barkin, to name but a few, and was made in 1984. What was it called?

Answer: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

I LOVE this movie and would encourage anyone to watch it. Basically, this movie is about a band of men who take on evil alien invaders from the eighth dimension. It was panned by the critics at the time, but, as I mentioned, it is now a cult classic. There was supposed to have been a follow-up movie, "Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League", but this never happened, sadly!
7. I'm djenmama, and my favourite movie is a horror film that stars George C. Scott as a world-weary detective, Ed Flanders as a flippant priest, and Brad Dourif and Jason Miller tag-team the roles of The Gemini Killer and Father Damian Karras. No pea soup or head-spinning in this one!

Answer: The Exorcist 3

In this movie, a strange and sinister series of murders leads a detective to a mental hospital. He encounters a man who looks like his old friend, the priest, but claims to be a serial killer who's long dead, and knows too much about the old killings. Throughout the movie, various characters either die or are possessed by an evil demon.

Don't let the fact that this is the third installment of the series keep you away, "Exorcist 3", based on William Peter Blatty's "Legion", is definitely worth your time!
8. Hi! I'm kimbwitchn's "inner child," and my favourite movie made for the kid in all of us is the story of a farm animal who wants to learn to do a job usually done by another animal. This Australian film was released in 1995 and featured both real and animatronic animals. One of the best scenes in the movie is the one where the farmer sings a song and dances a jig for the ailing title character. What movie is this?

Answer: Babe

"Babe" won a Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture--Musical or Comedy. The song that the farmer, played by James Cromwell, sings for Babe is called "If I Had Words" and is an adaptation of the Maestoso movement of Saint-Saens' organ symphony. That scene always makes me cry a little.

At the end of a sheepherding competition, which Babe wins, the farmer tells him, "That'll do, pig!"
9. Hi, Ankhsunamun1 again. In the cult classic, "Dark Star", what is the number of the talking bomb that refuses to get back into the bomb bay?

Answer: Bomb number 20

This is another of my all time favourite movies. "Bomb number 20" has an all-time classic line when it says, "I think, therefore I am." Of the characters in the movie, the 'beachball'-like alien that refuses to stay in the cargo hold is one of the funniest!
10. Greetings Programmes, Ankhsunamun1 here again. Another of my favourite films is "Blade Runner". At the end of the movie, Deckard and Rachel are running away and she kicks over a small, silver-paper origami creature. What was it?

Answer: A Unicorn

This was another of Gaff's (Edward James Olmos) origami creations. This harps back to a dream that Deckard had about a unicorn, but it was not included in the movie. There has always been another train of thought, that Deckard was also a Replicant, like Rachel, Batty, Pris, Zhora and Leon. Make your own mind up about that one!
