Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Imitation of Life" was the comeback film for Lana Turner, after great scandal in her personal life. What 1950s and '60s teen star played her daughter?

Answer: Sandra Dee

Lana Turner is my all-time favorite actress and this is a great tearjerker. The film was so sucessfull it was, at the time, the biggest-grossing film in the history of Universal Studios (Keep in mind Steven Spielberg was in high school at the time!). It is a re-make of the 1934 film of the same title starring Claudette Colbert.
2. "Singin' in the Rain" won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Answer: False

"The Greatest Show on Earth" won the Best Picture Oscar for 1952. It's not a bad film, but I definitely recommend "Singin' in the Rain." Classic Hollywood dance scenes aside, this is an hysterical comedy. Donald O'Conner's "Make 'em Laugh" dance is worth renting the video.
3. "Goodfellas" is considered by many the greatest Mob movie ever made. The true story of Henry Hill, a mobster of twenty-five years, it shows us insight in this enigmatic world. Joe Pesci won the Oscar for his role of Tommy DeVito, the stand-out character in the film, who was known for his colorful vocabulary. Whom did he NOT swear in front of?

Answer: his mother

Tommy's mother was played by Catherine Scorsese, director Martin Scorsese's mother. We never see Tommy with a priest, he wasn't married, and didn't curb his language around Paulie. According to the International Movie Database, the "F-word" is used in this film 246 times, mostly by Pesci.
4. My guilty-pleasure film is "Just One of the Guys." A great "bad" film, it tells us the story of a teenage girl who disguises herself as a boy, in order to have a better shot in a writing contest. The bully in this film is played by the same actor who was the bully in what other '80s teen film?

Answer: The Karate Kid

William Zabka played bully Greg Tolan in "Just One of the Guys," and bully Johnny Lawrence in "The Karate Kid." If you have never seen "Just One of the Guys," it is worth the 99-cent rental. Billy Jacoby is dead-on perfect as the world's most annoying little brother.
5. I was blown away the first time I saw "Toy Story," and I consider it one of my favorite films. Sid was the evil child who lived next door to Andy, and who "tortured" toys. Do you remember the name of his dog?

Answer: Scud

A movie after my own heart. Two of the voices were done by Annie Potts and John Ratzenberger (Bo Peep and Ham, respectively). Two of my all-time favorite television shows are "Designing Women" and "Cheers."
6. "Field of Dreams" is unique for it is both laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreakingly poignant. When Kevin Costner's character goes looking for old baseball player "Moonlight" Graham, he finds himself transformed back to 1972. He discovers this by seeing a film advertised on the movie marquee. What was that movie?

Answer: The Godfather

He also notices a license plate sticker and "Nixon for President" poster. Archie "Moonlight" Graham is played by legendary actor Burt Lancaster, in his final motion picture appearance.
7. "Sneakers" is a great film with a killer cast: Robert Redford, Ben Kingsley, River Phoenix, Dan Aykroyd, and the great Sidney Poitier. Another notable actor has a cameo at the end of the film as National Security Administration Agent Bernard Abbott. Who played him?

Answer: James Earl Jones

"Sneakers" and "Field of Dreams" have something in common, besides James Earl Jones appearing in both of them. They are the only two films on my list by the same filmmaker, Phil Alden Robinson.
8. If you are a soap opera fan, you will love "Soapdish." Funny from beginning to end, we are exposed to the backstage life of a TV daytime drama. Kevin Kline's character returns to the soap after he is found in a bad Florida dinner theater, starring in what legendary play?

Answer: Death of a Salesman

Sally Field, whom we know for her great dramatic roles ("Norma Rae", "Places in the Heart", "An Eye For an Eye") is hysterical in this film. Whoopie Goldberg, Robert Downey Jr., and Cathy Moriarty round out an amazing cast.
9. "The Birdcage" is the funniest movie I have ever seen. Gene Hackman was hysterical, especially for someone for whom we are accustomed to see in serious films. He won the Best Actor Oscar for "The French Connection" (1971). For what film did he receive his second Oscar?

Answer: Unforgiven

I honestly had tears streaming down my face the first time I saw "The Birdcage." It also stars Dianne Wiest (who is brilliant in everything she does), Robin Williams, a very young Calista Flockhart, and Nathan Lane in his best performance. Gene Hackman won Best Supporting Actor for 1992's "Unforgiven."
10. The best movie you probably haven't seen, "Running on Empty" made many critics' Top-Ten Lists in 1988. What acclaimed teen actor received an Oscar nomination for this film?

Answer: River Phoenix

A wonderful film about a family on the run from the FBI, "Running on Empty" will make you laugh, cry, and never hear James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" the same again. Do yourself a favor; rent it!
11. Secretary of State Colin Powell has listed "Moonstruck" as one of his favorite movies. Me too! Do you remember what Olympia Dukakis says to Cher when she says she loves Nicolas Cage?

Answer: "That's too bad"

The movie that won Cher her Oscar, you don't have to be Italian to appreciate the feeling of family in this film.
12. Many critics believe "L.A. Confidential" would have won the Oscar for Best Picture if it would not have been up against "Titanic" (me included). Do you remember which movie star Guy Pearce's character mistakes for a hooker?

Answer: Lana Turner

My favorite scene in all of film, he mistakes Lana for a hooker because she was sitting with known mobster Johnny Stomponato. Lana Turner later went through great scandal when her teenage daughter killed Stompanato, after Stompanato's history of abusing Lana had reached a head.
13. "Thelma & Louise" makes me proud to be a woman every time I watch it. Can you believe Brad Pitt wasn't the first choice to play J.D.? Do you know who was first offered the role?

Answer: William Baldwin

Baldwin turned down the role that put Brad Pitt on the map, so that he could do the film "Backdraft." By the way, "Backdraft" is also worth renting.
14. I saw "Rain Man" six times in the theater! It won four Oscars: Best Actor, Picture, Original Screenplay, and Director. The director has a cameo in the film, playing what part?

Answer: a psychiatrist

Towards the end of the film, Charlie takes Raymond to see a psychiatrist to determine whether he is fit to stay with him or he has to go back to Walbrook. This role was played by director Barry Levinson. I was never a Tom Cruise fan before this film; in fact I left during my second screening of "Top Gun," which I still think is a fairly lame film (Send all hate mail to my secretary!).

This was the film that proved to me what a great actor Cruise is and I am now a fan.
15. My all-time favorite film ever made is 1977's "The Goodbye Girl." Richard Dreyfuss (my favorite actor) won the Oscar as Best Actor for this film. His co-star in this film was nominated as Best Actress. Who was she?

Answer: Marsha Mason

Neil Simon at his best, "The Goodbye Girl" showed me the magic of film; it transformed me, a little Nebraskan, into a "sharp New York girl," via a darkened movie theater.
