Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Song of the South" starts with Johnny and his family traveling from their home in Atlanta to visit his grandmother on her plantation. Is this the way things are usually done in his family?

Answer: No

Johnny (played by Bobby Driscoll) asks a number of uncomfortable questions, including why they are visiting Miss Doshy (played by Lucile Watson) when she usually comes to visit them, to most of which the adults have no answer. At length, Aunt Tempy (played by Hattie McDaniel) distracts him with talk of Uncle Remus and his wonderful stories.

The fact is, John's (played by Erik Rolf) work as a newspaperman in 1877 Atlanta is controversial and possibly dangerous. That is why he wants his wife and son to stay safely with his mother-in-law.
2. When Johnny asks Aunt Tempy if Uncle Remus is real, what does she answer?

Answer: "Real? Of course he's real. You just wait till you hear him tell the tale about Br'er rabbit, and you'll know he's real."

Between them, Aunt Tempy and John make going to see Uncle Remus seem like a wonderful adventure, well worth leaving the city for. They also successfully divert Johnny's attention from other things, such as whether his parents are mad at each other.
3. Something happens after he arrives at his grandmother's that upsets Johnny. Though he loves his mother and grandmother, he resolves to run away from the plantation. Why does Johnny decide to leave?

Answer: His father has returned to Atlanta.

Distraught to find that his father must return to the city, Johnny sets out to follow him, carrying a bindle, in approved fashion. He waits till the evening, when the plantation workers and sharecroppers have finished for the day and some of them are gathered around a bonfire, listening to Uncle Remus' tales. He pauses to listen, then sadly goes on his way.

Warned by Aunt Tempy that the child has gone missing, Uncle Remus (played by James Baskett) finds him, taking him to his own cabin to fetch supplies for the journey, on which he proposes to accompany Johnny. Eventually, through his gentle understanding and application of his considerable knowledge of human nature, the kindly story teller persuades the child to return to his mother at the big house.
4. When Johnny arrives at his grandmother's home, she assigns a boy named Toby to look after him and help him get settled in, since life on the plantation is very different from life in Atlanta. On Johnny's first morning, Toby brings something to show him. What is it?

Answer: A frog

Johnny is delighted with what his new friend (played by Glenn Leedy) has brought, as well as what he can tell him about this new world he finds himself in. The two boys make plans to go frog hunting; but Johnny's mother, Miss Sally (played by Ruth Warrick), doesn't approve.

She seems to be a stiff person, who doesn't know how to have fun, and doesn't want Johnny to have fun either. As we gradually realize throughout the film, though, she is lonely and unhappy, having lost touch with the plantation and its ways.

She also misses her husband. These factors contribute to her being overly strict with her son.
5. Johnny meets children from a neighboring family, two brothers and a sister. What are their names?

Answer: Joe, Jake and Ginny Fabers

Joe (played by Gene Holland) and Jake (played by George Nokes) are unpleasant little boys. Disney Wiki notes that they "are meant to resemble Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear for one is slick and fast-talking, while the other is big and a little slow". Ginny (played by Luana Patten) is friendly though, being drawn to Johnny at once.

She gives him a puppy, sealing his devotion to her. Little do the children know that the puppy will eventually lead to trouble.
6. Aunt Tempy is busy in her kitchen when Uncle Remus comes in with, as she says, four little pieces of firewood. What song is she singing at the beginning of the scene?

Answer: Sooner or Later

The incorrect choices are songs featured in the animated segments of the movie.

Aunt Tempy pretends to be cross, but she's really quite pleased to see Uncle Remus. They are clearly great friends. Their comfortable visit is spoiled when the Fabers boys turn up wanting to see Miss Sally.
7. Uncle Remus didn't realize Johnny's mother had told the child he couldn't keep Peaches. When the storyteller finds this out, he is forced to give the puppy back to the Fabers boys. What other order does Miss Sally give Uncle Remus?

Answer: He must not tell Johnny stories about Br'er Rabbit anymore.

In a touching scene, Johnny comes running into Uncle Remus' cabin, calling Peaches. When the old man makes him understand that the puppy is back at the Fabers', he is dismayed. His distress grows as the kindly old man tells him he must obey his mother and that he himself, as he says, doesn't know if he's upwards or downwards, he is so confused and troubled.

When at last he brings himself to tell Johnny he will no longer be telling him stories, the little boy, completely crushed, begins to weep soundlessly.

He stands by Uncle Remus for a moment, then goes out, silently closing the door.
8. Is the birthday party Miss Sally has planned for Johnny a success?

Answer: No

Though it's a fine party as such things go, Johnny has been discontented. Finally Ginny arrives in a lovely new party frock made from her mother's wedding gown. They have a fine time, talking and laughing as Johnny leads her to the lawn where the party is in full swing; but, her nasty older brothers, Joe and Jake, mock and taunt them, eventually pushing Ginny into the mud. Johnny bravely tackles Jake while Joe, in typical bully fashion, runs away. Johnny finds Ginny, whose dress is covered with mud, and tries to comfort her, but accidentally starts her crying again instead.

As he tells Uncle Remus when the storyteller finds the children, it wasn't much of a party anyway. His father hadn't come, and now Ginny is dirty. To comfort them, Uncle Remus does what he does best.

He tells them a story. This one is about Br'er Rabbit and his laughing place, which cheers them all up but in the end leads to even more trouble.
9. Why does Uncle Remus leave the plantation?

Answer: Miss Sally has banned him from seeing Johnny.

Distraught at Sally's last rebuff and plunged into doubt about his calling as a storyteller, Uncle Remus prepares to leave his lifelong home on the plantation. Toby comes upon him packing and, unable to persuade the old man to change his mind, rushes off to tell Johnny. But by the time he finds his friend, Uncle Remus is already in the wagon and on his way.
10. In the end, do Johnny's father and Uncle Remus stay away from the plantation?

Answer: No

It takes the serious injury of their only child for Sally and John to realize what is truly important, and that is family. The people on the plantation, White and black alike, are all part of their extended family, especially Aunt Tempy and Uncle Remus. After all, family is not defined only by blood, but also by love.
