Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where were the ape scenes in the beginning filmed?

Answer: In a studio

The landscape images we see behind the apes were images rear projected onto a screen behind the actors.
2. How long ago do the scenes with the apes in the beginning take place?

Answer: 4 million years

This is later heard on the moon bus when the scientists are looking at photos and charts regarding the monolith found on the moon. One of them comments that it was deliberately buried 4 million years ago. This corresponds to the fact that the apes awoke one morning to find the monolith planted in front of them. We make the assumption that the monolith planted on Earth with the apes was put there at the same time the other monolith was buried on the moon.
3. We see Dr. Floyd and other people standing, walking, and sitting while they're on the space station. Why aren't they floating around due to zero gravity?

Answer: The space station is rotating: centrifugal force creates artificial gravity.

It's never really made outright obvious or explained, but we do see the station rotating.
4. What was the name of the ape leader? (The one who learned how to use a bone as a weapon.) (Character name, not actor name.)

Answer: Moonwatcher

It is revealed in the credits.
5. After the ape throws the bone in the air and the scene switches to space in the year 2001, what background score begins playing?

Answer: Blue Danube Waltz

No other music would have been more appropriate to play during the graceful dancing of the floating spacecraft we see orbiting the Earth.
6. What is the name of the organization that Dr. Heywood Floyd works for?

Answer: National Council of Astronautics

Although it's never made clear, I'm making an assumption that the National Council of Astronautics replaced NASA somewhere along the way.
7. Who does the voice of HAL 9000?

Answer: Douglas Rain

Rain's voice was used again in the sequel, "2010: The Year We Make Contact".
8. For what category did "2001: A Space Odyssey" win an Academy Award?

Answer: Best Effects, Special Visual Effects

The movie won for visual effects. It was nominated for, but did not win for, the other three categories listed here.
9. How many total different versions of Jupiter Mission Astronaut Dave Bowman do we see during his metamorphosis or evolution? (Including during the movie, near the end, and at the end.)

Answer: 5

Let's count them:

1) Young astronaut (his normal self)

2) Older astronaut (still wearing his space suit in the hotel room at the end, standing outside the space pod)

3) Even older man (sitting at the table eating, when he breaks the wine glass)

4) Very old man (in bed, pointing to the monolith)

5) Star Child (the very end of the film)
10. We've all heard the music that we call the "2001 Theme". It was played three times in the movie: opening credits, the scene when the ape learns how to use the bone, and at the end with the Star Child. What is the actual title of this music?

Answer: Also Sprach Zarathustra

It was composed by Richard Strauss. The now-famous theme from the movie is the opening sequence of a much larger piece of musical work. The English translation is "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" or "Thus Spake Zarathustra". It is inspired by the work of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.
