Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What airline's name appeared on the spacecraft that Dr. Heywood Floyd took to get to the space station?

Answer: Pan Am

If I remember correctly, after the movie was released, some people (probably wealthy) booked reservations with Pan Am for the first commercial flight to the Moon - if and whenever that would be.
2. What is the only visible technical flaw seen in the film?

Answer: The liquid Dr. Floyd is sipping slips back down the straw in a zero gravity environment

By the way, if you said that Dave Bowman could not survive without his helmet, scientists believe that a human could survive a short exposure to the vacuum of space.
3. When Dr. Floyd arrives at the space station and goes through voice print identification, what are the three facts about himself he is asked to give (in correct order)?

Answer: Destination, nationality, full name

'Moon, American, Floyd, Heywood R.'
4. During Dr. Floyd's 'layover' on the space station, what two hotel chains' signs do we see in the background throughout the space station sequence?

Answer: Hilton and Howard Johnson's

Where was Motel 6? On the neighboring space station??
5. From the space station, Dr. Floyd makes a video call to his home and his daughter answers. What does he call her?

Answer: Squirt

I wouldn't even name my dog Squirt!
6. During the video call, what is Dr. Floyd's daughter's first choice for a birthday gift?

Answer: Telephone

If she's talking to him on the telephone, why does she want a telephone? Like Dr. Floyd says, 'We've got lots of telephones.'
7. When Dr. Floyd turns down his daughter's first choice for a birthday gift, what is her second choice?

Answer: Bushbaby

Does anybody know anybody who has a bushbaby? Does anybody even know what a bushbaby is? I think it's a furry little critter of some sort.
8. At the end of the video call that Dr. Floyd makes to his daughter, what is the cost of the call that appears on the video screen?

Answer: One dollar and 70 cents

One dollar and 70 cents? Hey, the movie came out in 1968, not 2001.
9. Whose real life daughter played Dr. Floyd's daughter in the video call?

Answer: Stanley Kubrick

I guess when you're the producer AND director, you can cast whoever you want.
10. What was the cover up story made up about the discovery on the Moon to keep unauthorized people from snooping?

Answer: Epidemic

In the scene where Dr. Floyd is addressing the other scientists in the briefing, he admits that even he was a little embarassed by the cover story.
11. On the Discovery spacecraft, who gets a pre-recorded birthday video greeting from his parents?

Answer: Frank Poole

And we witness the control that HAL has on the spacecraft's functions. While viewing the video laying on his back on a suspended lounge chair of sorts, Frank says, 'A bit higher please, HAL.' And like magic, the headrest elevates Frank's head.
12. Dave Bowman and Frank Poole watch a pre-recorded television interview of themselves. What network broadcast the interview?

Answer: BBC

At least part of the movie was filmed in England, if not all. BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation, the same folks who brought us Benny Hill and Monty Python!
13. What was the name of the TV show that Bowman and Poole gave their interview on?

Answer: 'The World Tonight'

I hope you weren't thinking 'The Tonight Show'!
14. Where did the name 'HAL' come from?

Answer: None of these choices

Contrary to popular belief, 'HAL' had nothing to do with the letters in 'IBM'. This is urban legend and just a coincidence. If my memory serves me correctly, the novel tells us the answer is 'Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic' computer. I'm relying on memory there, but I know the 'IBM' thing is false.
15. When HAL kills the three scientists in hibernation, what three warning messages appear on the console?

Answer: 'Computer Malfunction', 'Life Functions Critical', 'Life Functions Terminated'

The first two messages were accompanied by loud electronic beeping sounds that were rather annoying. I wouldn't be surprised if the annoying part was intentional. The last message, 'Life Functions Terminated', ironically (or maybe not) was not accompanied by any sound.
16. With which one of the words below does HAL begin his sentences, more so than the other words shown?

Answer: 'Well'

Well, don't most of us begin many sentences with 'Well'? And HAL is as human as the rest of us...or is he?
17. HAL to Dave Bowman: 'I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a _________, and think things over.' (One or two words)

Answer: Stress pill

HAL says this as Dave is on his way to disconnect him, as HAL knows darn well what Dave's intentions are.
18. What was the name of the short story that inspired the idea for the movie?

Answer: 'The Sentinal'

By the way, the movie was NOT based on the novel of the same name. Arthur C. Clarke wrote the novel while the film was being produced. He wanted to publish it before the film's release, but Stanley Kubrick (who co-wrote the film's screenplay with Clarke) asked him to hold off until after the film's release. Clarke agreed.
19. Who wrote the short story that inspired the idea for the film?

Answer: Arthur C. Clarke

'The Sentinel' by Arthur C. Clarke was published prior to the making of the film. Isn't it only fair that Stanley Kubrick got the same person who wrote the inspiration to co-write the screenplay as well?
20. At the end of the film, the last thing we see is the 'Star Child'. Who was the Star Child deliberately made to look like?

Answer: Keir Dullea

Since Keir Dullea played Bowman, and the Star Child was an 'evolved' form of Bowman, it was only sensible to make the Star Child look like Dullea. But personally, I don't see the resemblance.
