Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the film, "Brats", Stan says to Ollie, "Remember the old adage: You can lead a horse to water..." What does Stan say next?

Answer: "But a pencil must be lead!"

Ollie is trying to get Stan and Ollie juniors to go to bed. When he tells the kids, "If you brats don't get to bed, I'll break your necks!" Stan replies, "Shh. Don't talk to them like that. Treat them with kindness. You'll get more out of them. Remember the old adage, you can lead a horse to water but a pencil must be lead!" Oddly enough, Ollie seems to understand Stan perfectly! One of Stan's classic lines!
2. In the film, "Sons of the Desert", Stan says to Ollie, "Well if she didn't go to the mountains..." What does he say next?

Answer: "Then Mohammed would have to come here!"

Stan & Ollie want to go to The Sons of the Desert convention (their fraternal lodge), but Ollie's wife wants a vacation in the mountains. They end up in all kinds of trouble in this movie!
3. What does Stan say to Mrs. Hardy and Mrs. Laurel to explain how they returned home from Honolulu in the movie "Sons of the Desert"?

Answer: "We ship-hiked!"

Stan hires a veterinarian to pose as a medical doctor and claim that Ollie needs a sea voyage to Honolulu for his health. Since Mrs. Hardy doesn't like sea voyages, she and Mrs. Laurel will remain at home while Stan is to go with Ollie to look after him.

Another funny quote: Ollie: "Now why did you hire a veterinarian?" Stan: "I didn't think his religion would make any difference!" "We ship-hiked" is said when the wives ask how they were able to get home before the rescue ship is due in port.
4. Another hilarious quote of Stan's in "Sons of the Desert": "Honesty is..." Complete the quote.

Answer: "The best politics!"

Another great quote. Stan's wife promises him that if he tells the truth, she wouldn't be angry. Stan tearfully admits that he and Ollie went to the convention. He ends up very happily eating chocolates, having a drink and smoking a cigarette (something Mrs. Laurel never allowed Stan to do). Mrs. Hardy ends up throwing all of the dishes at Ollie for not telling the truth!
5. From the film, "Block-Heads", Stan says to Ollie, "You remember how dumb I used to be?" Ollie replies, "Yes?" What does Stan say next?

Answer: "Well, I'm better now!"

Stan and Ollie are together in the trenches during World War I. Their commanding officer orders the platoon to make a rush on the enemy, but orders Stan to stay behind and guard the trench. Twenty years after the war ends, Stan is found still guarding the same trench! He is returned home and regarded a hero. Ollie sees his picture in the newspaper, and goes down to the "Old Soldier's Home" where Stan is staying for a reunion.

This is a very funny film!
6. This quote is from "The Music Box". Stan to a police officer: "Say listen, don't you think you're..." What's next?

Answer: "Bounding over your step?"

Stan and Ollie are delivering a player piano, but they must get the piano up a flight of VERY long steps! They annoy a lady trying to get down the stairs with a baby carriage. She reports them to the police officer. Before Stan's classic line, the officer kicks Ollie (twice) and after Stan says his line, hits Stan with his baton. If you want to see the actual steps, go to "The Music Box Wikipedia".

There are two pictures of the stairs on the site.
7. Stan says in "The Dancing Masters": "The harder they fall..." Finish the quote.

Answer: "The bigger I am!"

Stan and Ollie are dancing instructors who try to help an inventor sell a new flame-throwing machine that will supposedly help the Allies win World War II. To get money to finance the machine, Ollie remembers that there is an insurance policy for ten thousand dollars on Stan's legs. Stan is set up in a series of "accidents" so his leg will be broken and the boys can collect the money, but Ollie ends up with the broken leg himself. Stan's quote comes in the part where the boys buy the insurance policy from "accident prone" gangsters! The two "insurance agents" tell the boys a sob story of all of the "accidents" one of the "agents" has suffered, and how he never collected any money because he had no insurance.

The fake "agent" is supposed to be a big-shot business man. Of course, they don't realize this.

They think they are buying the policy from real insurance agents!
8. In this film, "Them Thar Hills", Ollie asks Stan a question about towing a trailer into the mountains. Ollie: "Can you take one of those things up into the mountains?" How does Stan reply?

Answer: "Sure-right up in the high multitude!"

Ollie has a severe case of gout, so his doctor recommends a trip to the mountains to rest and also advises him to drink plenty of water. Stan and Ollie rent a trailer and head out. Meanwhile, moonshiners are under fire from the police, and dump their moonshine in a well behind the cabin they are hiding out in.

By the time our boys arrive, everyone is gone. They park their trailer near the well, and Stan draws up a bucketful to make coffee and for Ollie to drink. When Stan sees the water, he tells Ollie that he thinks it's a funny color. Ollie informs Stan that it's iron in the water.

They drink plenty of it and get hilariously drunk!
9. In "Way Out West", Stan says to the fake Mary Roberts, "Yes, any bird can build a nest..." What's next?

Answer: "But it's not every one that can lay an egg!"

Stan and Ollie are to deliver the deed to a gold mine to Mary Roberts. But Stan blabs to the evil innkeeper, Mickey Finn (James Finlayson), about the deed. Finn then gets his wife to pose as Mary. This quote comes after Ollie informs the fake Mary of her father's death. Ollie says, "Now, compose yourself, smile. That's right, remember, every cloud has a silver lining." Another classic quote of Stan's to the fake Mary Roberts is, "Now that you own a gold mine, I bet you'll be a swell gold-digger!"
10. From "Twice Two", Stan says to Mrs. Hardy and Mrs. Laurel, "Ollie said we should go out to dinner..." Finish the quote.

Answer: "To celebrate our university!"

Stan and Ollie are married to each other's sisters (also played by Stan and Ollie), who seem to do nothing but bicker constantly! Ollie wants to eat out. Stan calls home to tell Mrs. Laurel (Ollie), but she is determined to stay home and fixes dinner for all with disastrous results!
