Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Todd Browning received the credit for directing the film. Who did the camera work?

Answer: Karl Freund

The camera work done by Freund is credited as being the best thing of the movie. (Next to Bela Lugosi, of course!) His moving camera technique gives the film an eerie mood.
2. Finish this line: "Among the rugged peaks that frown down along the Borgo Pass, are found crumbling castles of a _________ ______."

Answer: bygone age

This line was the first line spoken in a talking horror film. It was spoken by Carla Laemmle, the niece of Carl Laemmle, the founder of Universal Pictures.
3. The innkeeper has a mustache.

Answer: True

You didn't actually think these questions were going to be easy did you? Yes, the innkeeper had a great big thick mustache.
4. Why doesn't "Dracula" have any music?

Answer: Todd Browning was experienced in silent films.

Todd Browning directed several of Lon Chaney's silent films, including "Phantom of the Opera" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". As one of the questions in another "Dracula" quiz stated, Lon Chaney was the first actor selected to play "Dracula", but passed away before the filming even started.
5. "I am Dracula. I bid you welcome." This line was also in the novel.

Answer: True

Even though the film is not as close to the novel as it could have been, it took several lines from the book. Others include: "Listen to them, children of the night-what music they make!" and "The blood is the life, Mr. Renfield."
6. Which members of the cast were also in the play on Broadway?

Answer: Bela Lugosi, Henry Bunstun, Edward Van Sloan

Starting in 1927 and continuing for 2 years, the stage version of "Dracula" was a smash success. For the film, Bela Lugosi reprised his role of the count, Edward Van Sloan continued as Van Helsing, and Henry Bunstun played Dr. Seward.
7. Finish this line: "And after you deliver the message, you will remember nothing I now say. ________."

Answer: Obey

This is one of my favorite scenes of the film. Bela gives his hypnotic stare and the girl obeys.
8. What message was the girl supposed to deliver at Dracula's behest?

Answer: Dr. Seward was wanted on the phone.

In her hypnotic trance, the girl stated to Dr. Seward: "Dr. Seward, you're wanted on the telephone." Great scene.
9. We go now to the Seward Sanitorium. When a scream comes from the left side of the screen, what does one of the other inmates yell?

Answer: He probably wants his flies again!

Also a wonderful scene. This scene illustrates Karl Freund's genius with the camera.
10. How old was Bela Lugosi when he starred in "Dracula"?

Answer: 48

Bela's career in acting started LONG before "Dracula". He had about 30 years experience under his belt when he played the famous Count Dracula.
11. When Dr. Seward and his associates give Lucy a transfusion, they are being observed by others. Why was this?

Answer: They were conducting a class.

If you look closely, you'll see people sitting in the back at desks and taking notes. They don't say anything and don't move, so it's a little difficult to see them at first.
12. When Van Helsing analyzes Renfield's blood, he realizes the he's dealing with the undead. The man to his right fearfully utters a word. What is it?

Answer: Nosferatu

This is another tidbit that you have to listen for. I had to watch the film a few times before I could make out what the man even said!
13. Another movie line: "I may be able to prove that the superstition of yesterday, may become the scientific _________ of today."

Answer: reality

No one else will accept the fact that the vampire really exists.
14. Now we go to the next scene. If you observe carefully you'll notice that something is always hanging out of Van Helsing's coat pocket. What is it?

Answer: handkerchief

This is something that always cracks me up. Maybe Edward Van Sloan had allergies! :-)
15. Another one of my favorite lines: "Flies, flies? Poor puny things. Who wants to eat flies? You do ya ______."

Answer: looney

Martin is one of my favorite characters. He must have been cast to be the comic relief.
16. In the scene when Renfield is in his cell, how does Dracula give his instructions?

Answer: he uses telepathy

Bela Lugosi again uses those gorgeous hypnotic eyes to give the impression that he is giving Renfield his instructions for Mina.
17. In the scene when Dracula attacks Mina, there is something on the lamp shade. What is it?

Answer: a piece of cardboard

This is something about the movie that always drives me crazy. Due to the fact that this film was thrown together, the editors of the movie must have overlooked this minor detail.
18. "Dracula" was released on __________ 14, 1931. (Los Angeles, USA)

Answer: February

Released on Valentine's Day, "Dracula's" tagline was: "The strangest love story ever!"
19. What was the maid's last name?

Answer: Briggs

Only mentioned a few times in the film, the maid's name was Briggs. We never find out her first name.
20. We all know that the ship Dracula sailed to England in was called the "Vesta". Where was the footage to the scene with the storm taken?

Answer: an earlier silent film

As was mentioned earlier, Todd Browning was more experienced in silents. This part of the scene was taken from one of the other silent films that he directed at an earlier time.
21. There was a scene at the end of the film that was censored.

Answer: True

There is a scene at the end of the film in which Van Helsing comes back out and addresses the audience and says: "Just a moment, ladies and gentlemen. Just a word before you go. We hope that the memories of Dracula won't give you bad dreams, so just a word of reassurance.

When you get home tonight, and the lights are turned out and you're afraid to look behind the curtain and you dread to see a face appear at the window, well, just pull yourself together and remember: There ARE such things!" This scene was censored by the Catholic Church because it promoted superstition.
22. Bela Lugosi was only paid $500 a week for playing the Count.

Answer: True

I guess he was desperate at the time. But due to the wake of the Great Depression, Universal was not in a position to hire a big name actor and pay him top dollar for the part. So, the role went to Lugosi, who made Dracula immortal for all time.
23. Now a little history: "Dracula" was based on a real life man - he was a Romanian warrior. What was his name?

Answer: Vlad Dracula

Vlad the Impaler lived in the 1400's. Bram Stoker was fascinated by the name Dracula - which was Vlad's nickname - and used it in his novel. The names haven't been apart since.
24. Who was the oldest person in the cast?

Answer: Henry Bunstun

Henry Bunstun was born in 1874, Edward Van Sloan was born in 1881, Bela Lugosi was born in 1882, and Dwight Frye was born in 1899.
25. What was the reaction of the people in the audience when they first saw "Dracula"?

Answer: They were horrified.

Since this was the first talking horror film, as was mentioned before, the audience was absolutely terrified. They had never before seen a horror film that didn't have a logical ending like other Universal silents.
