Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1992 western stars Clint Eastwood as Will Munny, a former bounty hunter. He returns to his old trade to collect a bounty on the heads of two men who had cut up a prostitute. What movie is it?

Answer: Unforgiven

'Unforgiven' was directed my Clint Eastwood, and costarred Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman. Hackman played "Little" Bill Dagget, the sheriff who attempts to run Eastwood out of town. Freeman plays Ned Logan, Eastwood's former partner, who partners up with Eastwood for one last job. 'Unforgiven' is the third western to win a Best Picture Oscar. 'Dances With Wolves' and 'Cimarron' are the others.
2. This 1998 film stars James Van Der Beek as a high school senior living in Football Town, U.S.A. When forced into the spotlight due to the injury of the town's star quarterback, he begins to love the adulation of the townsfolk and becomes that which he has hated. Eventually, his girlfriend helps him remember what football is all about. He gets rid of the corrupt coach (Jon Voight), and leads his team to victory. What movie is it?

Answer: Varsity Blues

'Varsity Blues' was strangely compelling. I guess we can all relate to the pressures that parents put on their children. I think the most powerful scene in the movie is when James Van Der Beek confronts his father and says, "I don't want your life." It illustrates the problem of parents living their lives through their kids.
3. This 1973 movie stars Yul Brynner as a killer robot who is part of a realistic adventure program for rich people. Something goes wrong, and Brynner is no longer controlled by the rules of the adventure. The protagonist (Richard Benjamin) must somehow find a way to escape the uncontrollable, homicidal Brynner before it is too late. What movie is this?

Answer: Westworld

This movie was written and directed by Michael Crichton. It is interesting to note that over 90% of Crichton's books have been made into movies - books like 'Congo', 'Jurassic Park', 'The Terminal Man', and 'The Great Train Robbery'. In 'Westworld', Yul Brynner wore a costume that looked very similar to the outfit that he wore when starring in 'The Magnificent Seven'. Brynner is best remembered for his role as the King of Siam in 'The King and I'.
4. This 2000 movie stars Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, a warrior with six-inch claws and a mysterious past. He joins with a group of mutants and aids in defending the world against a plot to turn all the leaders of the world into mutants. What movie is it?

Answer: X-Men

'X-Men' was directed by Bryan Singer, who is also responsible for making 'The Usual Suspects'. Unlike many past superhero films, Singer is able to infuse reality and emotion into this movie. There are some stand out performances, especially from Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier, and Ian Mckellen as Magneto.

They are both exact copies of the characters in the comic books. Magneto is a fascinating character. He was oppressed as a young Jewish boy during the Holocaust. He is now oppressed because he is a mutant. Somehow this has caused him to snap and form his own kind of final solution. Ian McKellen starred as a Nazi in 'Apt Pupil', which was also directed by Singer.
5. This 1974 Mel Brooks comedy stars Gene Wilder as Dr. Frankenstein, the grandson of the man who created the Frankenstein Monster. He tries to hide from his past, but is eventually forced to face it. What movie is this?

Answer: Young Frankenstein

The Frankenstein Monster was played by Peter Boyle. This movie was filmed using the same scenery that was used in the 1931 version of 'Frankenstein'. Gene Hackman gives a memorable performance as a blind man who kills with his kindness.
6. This 1963 war epic stars Stanley Baker as Lt. John Chard, an engineer in the British army. While stationed in South Africa, he is forced to take command of a small mission named Rorke's Drift, and defend it against an invading Zulu army. With only a handful of men, he is able to hold back thousands. What is the movie?

Answer: Zulu

'Zulu' is based on a true story. Historically, the Zulu had declared war against the British and marched on the British stronghold of Isandlwana. Using a surprising amount of cunning and strategy, the Zulu completely wiped out the stronghold. This event was documented in the 1979 movie 'Zulu Dawn'. Fresh from victory, the Zulu marched on little Rorke's Drift.

In actuality, only fifteen british soldiers died at Rorke's Drift.
7. This 1961 western stars Marlon Brando as Rio, a bank robber who is betrayed by his friend and fellow bank robber, Dad Longworth (Karl Malden). He hunts down Longworth, and falls in love with Longworth's daughter. He is then torn between his love for Longworth's daughter, and his desire for revenge. What movie is it?

Answer: One-Eyed Jacks

'One-Eyed Jacks' was also directed by Marlon Brando. He replaced Stanley Kubrick, who was originally slated to direct. Brando and Malden had already acted together in the Oscar winning 'On the Waterfront'.
8. This 1990 action extravaganza stars Bruce Willis as John McClane, a police officer. While in an airport awaiting the arrival of his wife, he uncovers a plot to rescue a wealthy drug dealer from a police plane that is travelling to the airport. The rescuers take the airwaves hostage, leaving many planes trapped in the air. John McClane must stop the rescuers, or lose his wife. What movie is it?

Answer: Die Hard 2: Die Harder

This movie was directed by Renny Harlin. John McTiernan ('Die Hard') wanted to direct it, but he had already made a commitment to direct 'The Hunt For Red October'.
9. This 1949 film stars Joseph Cotten as an American writer visiting war-torn Vienna to visit a friend of his, named Harry Lime (Orson Wells). Cotten finds out that his friend was hit by a car, and he investigates this. After seeing Lime, thanks to the light from an open window, he delves deeper, and discovers that this is all connected to Harry Lime selling bad penicillin on the Black Market. What movie is it?

Answer: The Third Man

'The Third Man' is considered one of the greatest films of all time. It is ranked #57 on the AFI's top 100 movies list. Harry Lime's famous line about the Swiss was ad-libbed by Orson Wells. He says, "In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." My favorite character in this movie is Major Calloway (not Callahan - he's English, not Irish), who plays the police chief investigating Harry's death.
10. This 1939 film stars John Clements as Harry Faversham, a British soldier, who decides not to fight when Britain goes to war with Sudan. His closest friends each give him an item that represents cowardice. In order to prove them wrong, he travels to Sudan in disguise and bravely saves each of them. What movie is it?

Answer: The Four Feathers

The item each friend gives to him is a white feather. His fiancée also gives him a white feather, so he must prove he is not a coward, or lose her forever. This movie was remade in 2002, and starred Heath Ledger as Harry Faversham.
