The Beautiful "Out of Africa" Trivia Quiz

Hans is not faithful to Karen and during the hunt, his brother Bror tries to comfort her. Karen suggests that she and Bror should marry, if not for love, then for her money. He agrees and so she travels to Africa where they marry and start a farm.

Karen knows no-one in Africa and during their wedding reception, she is advised to make friends with everyone there. A free spirited young lady named Felicity introduces herself to Karen and they immediately become friends. Felicity is something of a tomboy but seems to admire Karen tremendously. Karen's wedding ensemble consists of a stunning hat with a netting veil. Felicity tells her that it isn't very practical and that the only bugs it will keep away are the big ones.

It is originally agreed that they will start a dairy, but upon arrival at the house, Bror tells Karen of his change in plans. She is visibly upset and tells him that next time he changes his mind, he should use his own money, not hers. Coffee has never been attempted in such a high altitude in Africa and Karen tells the foreman to plant only 500 acres and hope for a good crop in four years.

Karen is away from the farm when the men arrive. Dennis goes looking for Karen and finds her in a precarious situation with a lioness approaching and she without her rifle. Back at the house, Berkeley is unloading all sorts of treats for Karen, including fresh meat and brandy.

She asks the men to stay for dinner and the three enjoy a social visit. After dinner Karen tells them a story, something she is very gifted at. Upon leaving, Dennis presents her with a beautiful gold pen and encourages her to write her stories down.

Bror, like his brother Hans, is unfaithful to Karen and he infects her while she visits him at camp. Bror is called home from the battlefield to run the farm while Karen makes the journey to her home in Denmark for treatment. When she returns to Africa months later, she is cured, but can never bear children and is uncertain of the future of her marriage.

Answer: New Year's Eve

Bror pledges his faithfulness to Karen and even apologizes to her for making her ill. It appears at first that he has mended his ways, but on New Year's Eve, he sneaks away with another woman and Karen discovers this. She asks him to take an apartment in town and he agrees. Earlier in the evening while Bror is absent, Karen dances with Dennis and at midnight, they exchange a beautiful kiss.

Answer: He washes her hair.

Karen's brush gets tangled in her hair so Dennis offers to wash her hair while reciting poetry to her. The two spend weeks together while on safari. During the day they observe giraffes and rhinos, hunt for meat and even test how monkeys react to music.

In the evenings they dine, drink, dance and talk. Karen trusts Dennis enough to tell him that she had Syphilis, and before the trip is through, we can see how they have fallen in love.

Answer: "You could have asked."

To which Dennis responds, "I did. She said yes." There appears to be no ill-will between the men except that technically Karen and Bror are still married.

Answer: plane crash

Dennis has recently learned to fly and takes Karen on a flight over the African landscape. She is actually packing her things to leave with Dennis when Bror comes to the house and tells her that he was killed when his plane went down. She is devastated and now has nothing.

The coffee crop has been destroyed by fire and Karen is now broke and alone. She must sell all her belongings and move back to Denmark, leaving her beloved Africa behind.

Answer: two lions

Karen is narrating the end of the story and it is reported that a lion and lioness are seen each day near Dennis' grave. Having loved Africa as much as she does, Karen is confident that Dennis would have liked knowing that the two lions are able to sit near his grave and look out across the beautiful plains.
