Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This movie is a biographical piece based on writings by what author?

Answer: Isak Dinesen

Dinesen wrote quite a few works on her African tenure. "Out of Africa" is, of course, the most famous. Isak Dinensen is a pen name. Her real name was Karen Dinesen Blixen.
2. What kind of plantation did Karen create/own?

Answer: Coffee

She initially wanted a dairy plantation but her husband thought coffee would be better since it takes 4-5 years to produce. Thus, their stay in Africa would be longer.
3. Of what nationality was Karen?

Answer: Danish

She was somewhat of an outsider in the English Empire's Kenyan society. She mostly kept to herself, tended her farm, and bonded with the natives on her land (the Kikuyu tribe).
4. Karen suffered from what STD?

Answer: Syphilis

She took low levels of arsenic to cure herself. She was a different person after her prolonged treatment; she was less lady-like and more outspoken.
5. Who was the first person Karen met upon her arrival in Africa?

Answer: Denys Finch Hatton

The train was stopped for Denys to load ivory. Karen agreed to transport it with her cargo. This marked the beginning of their friendship and subsequent love affair.
6. Which classical composer's music set the mood for much of Denys and Karen's love affair?

Answer: Mozart

Denys purchased a gramophone and Mozart records as a gift for Karen.
7. What was Karen's official title?

Answer: Baroness

She married Baron Blixen with the expressed reason of cashing in her dowry and acquiring a title. Theirs most certainly was a "marriage of convenience".
8. With what kind of animal did Karen have repeated encounters?

Answer: Lion

She was almost eaten on three different occasions!
9. What informal name was Karen dubbed by her number one servant, Farah?

Answer: Saboo

At the end of the movie Karen says to Farah: "I want to hear you say my name." He responds: "You are Karen, Saboo." Quite an emotional moment.
10. Which of the following adventures did Karen and Denys NOT partake in together?

Answer: Riding a train across Africa

Denys was a good pilot but alas was killed in an airplane crash. This tragedy (plus her coffee factory burning down) marked the end of Karen's interest in Kenya. She returned home to Denmark, wrote about her experiences, and never returned to Africa. What a life! :-)
