Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From where does Elwood pick up his brother, Jake?

Answer: Joliet Prison

Jake is released from Joliet after serving three years of a five year sentence for attempting to rob a gas station. He did it to get money to pay the band.
2. What kind of vehicle is Elwood driving when he picks up Jake?

Answer: a police car

Elwood bought the police car cheaply at an auction after he had exchanged the original 'Bluesmobile' for a microphone. Jake is not impressed until Elroy shows him the car's power by jumping over an opening bridge.
3. Elwood and Jake visit the orphanage where they were brought up. What do they call the nun there?

Answer: The Penguin

The Penguin tells them that the orphanage will close if it is not able to pay $5,000 owing in taxes. Jake offers to get the money but the nun furiously says that she will accept no money that is the result of crime.
4. The preacher at the Triple Rock Church is played by which iconic rhythm and blues singer?

Answer: James Brown

James Brown was a top artist in the music field. He has been a singer, dancer, actor, songwriter and bandleader. His professional career began in 1956 and he was still appearing at major events until the year of his death in 2006. Among his most famous songs are "Night Train", "I Got You (I Feel Good)", "Papa Got a Brand New Bag", and "It's a Man's World."
5. What does Jake offer to buy from the man at the next table in the dining room of Chez Paul?

Answer: His wife and daughters

Jake's aim is to make himself as objectionable as possible in the restaurant, so that trumpeter, "Mr. Fabulous", who is the maître d' there, will agree to rejoin The Band. Jake threatens to come and eat there every day if he refuses.
6. Why is the 'Mystery Woman' trying to kill Jake?

Answer: He left her waiting at church on their wedding day.

When she catches up with Jake, in a service tunnel, she is ready to shoot him. He gives a wonderful list of reasons why he did not turn up, then looks up at her with big brown puppy eyes, and she can't resist him. As they embrace, Jake drops her into the mud and runs off with Elwood to escape their pursuers.
7. The Band's first gig is at Bob's Country Bunker. Their usual style of music nearly causes a riot. What theme from a sixties western TV series do they play that pleases their audience?

Answer: Rawhide

"Rawhide", about the big cattle drives of the 1800s, was broadcast in the US from 1959 to 1966 and was the third longest running western on TV. Clint Eastwood began his acting career in "Rawhide" playing the ramrod, Rowdy Yates.
8. The Band needs new instruments. Who is the famous blind pianist and singer who plays the part of the owner of the music shop?

Answer: Ray Charles

My favourite quote from Ray Charles is, "I never wanted to be famous. I only wanted to be great". Ray Charles' real name was Ray Charles Robinson. He dropped the last name so that he would not be confused with the famous boxer, Sugar Ray Robinson. Over his long career Ray Charles embraced many music styles: blues, country, gospel, jazz and big band music.
9. How do the boys get their big gig?

Answer: Blackmail

Steve Lawrence plays the part of Maury Sline, whom the boys blackmail into setting up their big fundraising concert by threatening to reveal certain information about him to his wife. Steve Lawrence played in both "The Blues Brothers" and its sequel, "The Blues Brothers 2000".
10. What is the ultimate fate of the leader of the 'Illinois Nazis' and his Gruppenfuehrer?

Answer: Their car drives off the end of a partially built motorway.

As the Blues Brothers speed towards Chicago to pay the tax bill in time to save the orphanage, they are pursued by hundreds of police and other vehicles, a troupe of mounted police and a police launch. Among them is the car containing the Fuehrer and his Gruppenfuehrer, who want revenge for the way the brothers had humiliated them, by forcing them to jump from a bridge into the water. The crowd who had been jeering the Nazi speaker had rocked with laughter as he and his drenched, uniformed men climbed out of the pond.

A shot from the Nazi's gun makes 'The Bluesmobile' throw a rod, and its windscreen becomes covered in oil. Elwood unknowingly drives on to a motorway which is under construction, followed by his pursuers. 'The Bluesmobile' nearly runs over the end of the road, then in some amazing special effects, back somersaults over the Nazi vehicle which continues on into the void. As the vehicle falls, in slow motion, to the road hundreds of feet below, the Gruppenfuehrer looks at his leader and earnestly tells him that he has always loved him.
