Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Love blooms in a tenement garden in this Romeo and Juliet story. Buster and Virginia are in love, but their parents disapprove. Big Joe Roberts as the girl's father battles Buster's on-screen and real-life father, Joe Keaton. In which short do The Flying Escalantes add their acrobatic skills?

Answer: Neighbors

Released in 1921, "Neighbors" was co-written and co-directed by Eddie Cline, who also plays one of the cops. Gags included Buster being suspended by his shoes from a clothesline, only to get beaten like a rug by his father. For some reason the elder Keaton had his arm in a sling for the second half of the film; his character explained the injury as due to having bought a Ford.
2. To forget his beloved, who has jilted him, Buster puts to sea. He's taken aboard a whaling ship. Gags include Captain Joe's habit of tossing crewmen overboard for the slightest infraction (tossing wreaths after them). What film has Buster getting blown sky-high by Naval target practice?

Answer: The Love Nest

Released in 1923, "The Love Nest" was co-directed by Eddie Cline, and featured Keaton's childhood neighbor (and favorite comic foil) Big Joe Roberts.

"The Love Nest", like "Convict 13" (1920), "The Playhouse" (1921), "The Frozen North" (1922), and feature "Sherlock Jr." (1924), hinged on the dream-within-a-story construct.
3. Buster's favorite comic foil, Big Joe Roberts, plays his boss in this film, set in a combination garage and smithy. Buster uses a helium balloon to substitute for a jack stand, trashes a Cadillac, and leaves his greasy hand prints all over a beautiful white horse. What film ends with Buster pulling the shade as his wife puts the baby to bed?

Answer: The Blacksmith

Released in 1922, "The Blacksmith" was co-written and co-directed by Malcolm "Mal" St. Clair. It includes some of Buster's more fantastical, impossible gags.
4. Buster and his pal share a one-room house, where the one room is every room. The bed converts to an organ. The phonograph converts to a stove. The couch converts to a bathtub. But trouble brews when both roommates love the farmer's daughter. Which film leaves Buster both drenched and newly married in the end?

Answer: The Scarecrow

"The Scarecrow", released in 1920, was co-written and co-directed by Eddie Cline, who also played a bit part as a truck driver. Gags included Buster trying to ride off on a wooden horse, Sybil Seely sending Joe Keaton flying with an accidental kick to the head, and Buster sparing his shoes by crossing a creek upside-down.

A chase scene featured the talents of Luke the Dog, who followed Keaton up a ladder and all over the top of a collapsed building's remaining outside wall.
5. This spoof of melodramatic westerns exists only in fragments. Buster holds up a saloon with a cut-out partner, shoots the wrong couple, and courts a woman who is not his wife. Which film is unique in presenting Buster as the bad guy?

Answer: The Frozen North

Buster was poking fun at William S. Hart, who didn't appreciate the effort. Buster's friend Eddie Cline was co-director.
6. We start with Buster's unsuccessful attempts to end his wretched life. But the streetcar won't run him down, the safe won't fall on him, and he can't even hang himself properly. What film leaves Buster in a predicament that leaves him no choice but offer to hunt up a wild armadillo?

Answer: Hard Luck

Buster later said that final gag in "Hard Luck" -- which I won't give away -- got him by far the biggest laugh of his career. This ending was long thought lost, but was discovered -- to the joy of silent film buffs -- in a Russian archive print.
7. Buster is a bank teller, and a sucker for a pretty girl. When he follows bank robbers to their hideout, all sorts of trouble ensues. What film leaves Buster facing stern judgment in the end?

Answer: The Haunted House

In a scene similar to the hat gag in Buster's very first film, "The Butcher Boy," Buster again finds himself in a sticky situation -- this time glued to the money in the bank. I won't give away the final scene, except to say that the concept has made its way into a lot of cartoons over the years.
8. The natives are restless after white men try to steal their land. Buster bungles to the rescue. A lot of the gags involve tremendous falls -- off a cliff, through a broken bridge, and in a leap from a tree. In the end, Buster's efforts leave him in great peril, but eventually save the day. Which short was a feather in Buster's porkpie hat?

Answer: The Paleface

Childhood neighbor Big Joe Roberts plays a strong role in "The Pale Face" as chief of the tribe. Of course, Buster has a love interest, in this case Virginia Fox as a beautiful Indian maiden.
9. How many Busters can one movie hold? More than two dozen, if it's this film! Buster is the orchestra and the orchestra leader, the stage hand, the minstrels, and the entire audience. Which film made movie magic with multiple Busters?

Answer: The Playhouse

Buster filmed "The Playhouse" while he was recovering from a broken ankle. Since the leg couldn't stand up to his usual antics, he turned to special effects instead.
10. Buster gets the wrong diploma, and with it, a job offer he can't refuse. But since he lacks the requisite skills, everything goes wrong. Even in real life, things went badly amiss for Buster, since one of his masterpieces malfunctioned and left Buster with a broken ankle. Which short left Buster busted?

Answer: The Electric House

"The Electric House" was the first short Buster made in his new studio, but he wasn't pleased with the end result. He thought it was too weak a film to release as a first work, so he shelved it and launched the new phase of his career with "One Week."
