"The Butterfly Effect": Part 2 Quiz

I had so many questions for "The Butterfly Effect" that they had to be put into two quizzes. This is about the latter portion of the film starring Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart. This is based on the movie, not the DVD.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Evan goes to the diner at which Kayleigh worked in another reality (the original one). When he doesn't find her there, he asks George Miller, Kayleigh's father, where Kayleigh can be found. What is Kayleigh doing with her life at this point?

Answer: She is a prostitute.

Evan finds Kayleigh living in a sleazy motel. She has scars on her face and remnants of a drug binge in her room.
2. Which aspect of Evan's story does Kayleigh find most unbelievable?

Answer: That she was ever in a sorority

Through tears, Evan tells her, "You were happy then."
Kayleigh complains to Evan that her life is in shambles. She suggests that he go back to when they were 13 and stop Lenny from killing Tommy, leaving Kayleigh defenseless against her father and starting the chain of events that led her to where she is now.
3. Evan goes back to the mailbox fiasco. Which of these IS **not true** in the ensuing reality?

Answer: George Miller has hanged himself.

Evan tries to get Mrs. Halpern to go into the house instead of toward the mailbox. Tommy pushes her to the ground, actually saving her. Tommy finds spirituality and becomes a "Jesus Freak" in the next reality. Evan bears the brunt of the explosion and loses both of his arms and the ability to walk. Lenny and Kayleigh are an item. Evan would have left the world in this state, everyone happy except himself (he even tries to kill himself to end his trips into the past), but then he meets his mother.

She began chain smoking after Evan blew himself up. Evan tells her that everything is going to be alright; that she won't hurt anymore. She says he sounds just like his father.
4. To change this reality, Evan decides he needs to destroy George Miller's blockbuster, thus keeping the mailbox explosion from ever happening. So Evan goes to the time when he and Kayleigh were performing "Robin Hood" for her father's video camera. Evan goes to look for the blockbuster, but he says he's looking for something else. What does he say he's looking for?

Answer: belt

He skips off to a side of the basement, whistling. George says he doesn't really need the belt (since he's going to be stripping anyway). Evan comes back with the explosive and a lighter.
5. Evan wakes up from this black-out in an asylum. Why has Evan been institutionalized?

Answer: He killed Kayleigh Miller.

In the scene in the basement, Evan lights the blockbuster and, after a brief physical encounter with George, the explosive rolls away. Kayleigh picks it up, thinking it is a sparkler.
6. Where are Evan's journals in this reality?

Answer: They never existed.

Since Evan was institutionalized shortly after he began keeping a journal, the writing never became habitual.
7. What was Jason, Evan's father always "screaming for" when he was in the institution?

Answer: his photo album

The doctor tells Evan this after he tells him that his journals never existed. Evan realizes that photographs did for Jason what journal entries do for him. Somehow, Jason managed to create a reality where his albums did not exist; just like Evan made a reality where his journals didn't exist.
8. In the middle of the night, Evan breaks into the doctor's personal office. He visualizes himself into a scenario from a home movie. What **doesn't happen** in this reality?

Answer: Evan has a nosebleed when he regains consciousness.

The home movie is from when Evan and Kayleigh first met. Evan tells Kayleigh that he hates her and if she ever comes near him again, he will kill her and her whole family. In a previous reality (paraplegia), Kayleigh told Evan that he was the first person she had ever cared about.

When her parents divorced, she chose to live with her father, even though she hated him, because if she didn't, she would never see Evan again. Evan arranged it so that Kayleigh no longer cared about him. When Evan comes to, his nose is not bleeding like it did after all his other exploits in the past when he suffered hemorrhaging and created new memories.

In a memory sequence, like the other realities, we the audience see that Kayleigh and Tommy went to live with their mother and Tommy made a speech at his high school graduation, possibly as the valedictorian.
9. Evan destroys a lot of things that would make him remember his past.

Answer: True

Evan and Lenny, his roommate, go out to a secluded junk yard with boxes of Evan's things. Evan sets the whole mess on fire. "I know who I am. I don't need a bunch of stuff to remind me."
10. Does Evan ever see Kayleigh again?

Answer: Yes

Many years later, we see him leaving a building in which he sees patients, probably as a psychiatrist. He passes Kayleigh on the sidewalk. They both do a double take but keep going their separate ways. This concludes my "The Butterfly Effect" quizzes. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed making them.
