Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which daughter claims to be Brigitta?

Answer: Louisa

After Maria arrives at the Von Trapp-house and the Captain whistles the children to introduce themselves, Maria is left alone with the children. Maria then asks the children to repeat their names and tell her how old they are. First Liesl lets Maria know that she is 16 and doesn't need a governess, then Friedrich lets her know that he is 14 and impossible and thirdly Louisa tells Maria that "I am Brigitta".
2. According to Liesl, why do the children play tricks on the governesses?

Answer: To get their father's attention

Since his wife died, Captain Von Trapp has distanced himself from his children because of the sorrow it brings. The children feel sad about it because they love their father and want to be close with him. On the first night when Frau Schmidt brings Maria some fabric for new dresses, she tells Maria that after the Captain's wife died he distanced himself from everything that reminded him of her, even the children.

While on their picnic in the mountains, Maria says that she can't imagine how children as nice as them can play such awful tricks on people, Liesl responds with "How else can we get father's attention?" When the Captain returns from Vienna, he and Maria start arguing about the children and Maria states that the children want so much to be close to him.
3. Why does Liesl suffer a heartbreak?

Answer: Rolf joins the Nazis.

After the Anschluss where the Germans invade Austria, Liesl's boyfriend, Rolf, joins the Nazis. This causes him not to want to spend any time with her since he now "has more important matters" as he puts it. After he gives her a letter for her father at the concert hall, he leaves her with a look on her face that, to me, seems like she is very hurt. Later, at the house, she asks Maria what she should do when she stops loving someone "... or he stops loving you." That last line also tells me, that she is still hurting. During their escape, while hiding in the cemetery, Liesl notices Rolf among the Nazis and lets out a gasp and gives away their hiding place.

This also seems like she isn't quite over him yet.
4. At one point, Gretl's finger is injured. Why?

Answer: Friedrich bites her.

Since Friedrich is fourteen and Gretl five at the time of the movie's beginning, I have always wondered about this fact, because it seems very unusual that a fourteen year old boy bites his five year old sister. Nonetheless, when Maria returns from the abbey and asks Gretl what has happened to her finger, Gretl responds with "It got stuck" and when Maria asks "In what?" Gretl says "Friedrich's teeth".
5. Which of these tricks have the children not performed at any time, that we know of?

Answer: Putting spiders in the governess' bed

As told in question two, the children plays tricks on the governesses to get their father's attention. These tricks include putting a frog in Maria's pocket and according to Frau Schmidt they put a snake in Fraulein Helga's pocket, putting a pinecone on Maria's chair at the dinner table and according to Kurt they put glue on Fraulein Josephine's toothbrush. Liesl does mention spiders when she explains to Maria on the first night why she is able to climb up to her window. Liesl says that Louisa can do it while holding a jar of spiders but she never mentions what the spiders are used for.
6. While hiding in the abbey, which children are sitting with Maria?

Answer: Friedrich, Louisa and Gretl

Maria sits behind one tombstone with Gretl on her lap and Friedrich and Louisa beside her. Behind the tombstone next to it, Captain Von Trapp sits with Marta, Brigitta, Kurt and Liesl. When there are four tombstones and nine people, it has always been a mystery to me why they only hid behind two tombstones.
7. Which child is "glad to go" and "cannot tell a lie"?

Answer: Brigitta

This is sung during "So Long, Farewell" at the party being held in the Von Trapp mansion. The individual lines goes as follows:

Marta: "I hate to go and leave this pretty sight."
Friedrich: "Adieu, adieu to you and you and you."
Liesl: "I'd like to stay and taste my first champagne. Yes?" and the Captain replies "No."
Kurt: "I leave and heave a sigh and say 'goodbye'. Goodbye!" in a high-pitch note.
Brigitta: "I'm glad to go, I cannot tell a lie."
Louisa: "I flit, I float, I fleetly flee, I fly."
Gretl: "The sun has gone to bed and so must I."
8. Which of the following children do we not see dancing while standing outside during the ball?

Answer: Louisa

Louisa, Brigitta, Kurt and Gretl are standing outside and watching people dance inside and discussing whether or not the men and women look beautiful. They then see Liesl dancing and when Brigitta asks who she is dancing with, Friedrich comes and offers her a dance.

While the two of them dance, Maria comes outside and agrees to try and teach Kurt how to dance The Laendler. We see Louisa outside along with her siblings but we never see her dance while the children are standing outside.
9. What does Marta want for her seventh birthday?

Answer: Pink parasol

When Maria first arrives at the house and meets the children she asks for their names and their ages. The children also tells her one thing about themselves. The children tell her the following:

Liesl: "I'm 16 years old and I don't need a governess."
Friedrich: "I'm 14 years old and I'm impossible."
Louisa: "I'm Brigitta."
Brigitta: "I'm 10 and I think your dress is the ugliest one I have ever seen."
Kurt: "I'm 11 and I'm incurable."
Marta: "I'm going to be seven on Tuesday and I'd like a pink parasol."
10. Which child's name does Maria forget in her evening prayer and also gets credit for "wanting to check on Maria" during the thunderstorm?

Answer: Kurt's

Maria's evening prayer ends like this "... God bless Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Brigitta, Marta and little Gretl and oh God what was that last boy's name? Well, God bless What's His Name." During the thunderstorm when the boys run into Maria's bedroom she asks if they were scared too and Friedrich replies "Oh no, we just wanted to make sure that you weren't." and when Maria says that it was very thoughtful of him, he says "It wasn't my idea.

It was Kurt's." Maria then adds "God bless Kurt."
