Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This film is about a writer who gets obsessed with a picture on his wall featuring a boat on a lake. What is the name of Scorsese's first short film?

Answer: What's a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This?

It's a very good short film that lasts about 9 minutes. It was made in 1963. "The Big Shave" is a documentary that is a metaphor of a war. "The Picture on the Wall" is the only one I made up.
Believe it or not, Mr. Scorsese was going to be a priest but decided to go into cinema. That's kind of funny because quite a few of his films feature gang violence and such. He attended New York University's Film School. He made a quite a few short films there.
2. A short film Scorsese made back in his days at NYU is titled "The Big Shave". It is about a man who is shaving and does not stop. He goes past the hair, skin and then the bottom of his face gets bloody. Some people say this is a metaphor for what U.S war?

Answer: Vietnam

The other title for this film was "Viet '67". Yes, he keeps shaving and eventually there is blood coming out of his face. It is a metaphor for Vietnam because it symbolizes how the USA was self-destructive in Vietnam. Scorsese managed to not get drafted into Vietnam just by pure luck. He has made a couple of films related to Vietnam.
3. This film is about an Italian-American living in New York who gets romantically involved with a girl. He decides to marry her and settle down. Then he finds out that she was raped early on in her life and can't handle it. What is the title of this 1967 film?

Answer: Who's That Knocking at My Door

It was the winner of the 1968 Chicago Film Festival and this was his first feature film. One of the themes in this movie is Catholic guilt which has been in other Scorsese films. The title does not have a question mark because in the film industry it is considered bad luck to put a question mark in your film title.
4. This movie is set in the American South in the 1930s. It is about a young woman who falls in love with a union organizer and finds out that he is a thief. They form a small gang of robbers and start robbing trains. What is the name of this early film in Scorsese's career?

Answer: Boxcar Bertha

"Boxcar Bertha" was made in 1972. This movie is Scorsese's second full-length feature film. Eventually the characters become notorious criminals and are hunted down by officers. I made up "The Good Old Days" and "A Bonnie and Clyde Story".
5. This film is about an Italian-American played by Harvey Keitel. He is a devout Catholic and is trying to make a name for himself in the local mob. He feels he has a responsibility for his childish friend who is also very destructive. He is played by De Niro. There is also the problem between his Catholicism and ambitions with the mob. What is the title of this film?

Answer: Mean Streets

Scorsese has made many films with De Niro. This was Scorsese's first film collaboration with De Niro. Even Scorsese makes an appearance in "Mean Streets". Again, there is the issue of Catholic guilt in this film. I made up the other wrong titles. This movie was made in 1973.
6. Scorsese has made a lot of documentaries. One of his many documentaries is about his parents describing their experience as Italian immigrants living in New York. Are Scorsese's parents are actually played by themselves?

Answer: Yes

The name of this film is "Italianamerican". Scorsese has made many documentaries. Scorsese's mother even made meatballs in this documentary.
7. Scorsese took a different direction in his film making career with this film. It's about a widow who moves in with her son in Arizona and starts her life over again. She also starts to work at a café. What is the name of this 1974 film?

Answer: Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

He made this film to prove that he could make quality films with a female leading role. He proved it. Ellen Burstyn won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Diane Ladd was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
8. This is one of Scorsese's highest acclaimed films. This Robert De Niro movie is about a very troubled marine who fought in Vietnam. He suffers from insomnia and takes a job as a taxi driver. He takes a girl out on a date and is rejected afterwards by her. This sends him into a state of violent aggression and he buys quite a few weapons. He then meets a 12 year old prostitute played by Jodie Foster whom he becomes obsessed with helping. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: Taxi Driver

This film is in AFI's top 100 movie list and coined the phrase, "Are you taking to me?" This film and "Raging Bull" are two of his highest acclaimed films. "Taxi Driver" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. It lost to the famous boxing movie "Rocky".
9. This film is a tribute to his home city. It was a flop at the box office and made less than it cost to make. This sent Scorsese into a deep depression. What is the name of this box-office flop?

Answer: New York, New York

This film was actually a musical. It doesn't sound like Scorsese to make a musical. It also used a cheap backdrop. It looked like a '20s themed movie. Eventually De Niro convinced Scorsese to start to make films again.
10. His last film of the '70s is considered by people to be one of the greatest concert films ever made. It's about a farewell concert by a Canadian-American rock group name The Band. What is the name of this documentary?

Answer: The Last Waltz

Scorsese actually filmed the concert and made it into a documentary. There were also many special guests at the concert such as Ringo Starr, Neil Diamond, and Eric Clapton. Afterwards he went on to make one of his best films, "Raging Bull". I hoped you like this quiz.
