Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The two protagonists of the film were Christopher Boyce and Daulton Lee, who had been friends for a long time. How did they know each other?

Answer: They were altar boys together.

Christopher Boyce and Daulton Lee originally met when they were altar boys together, as the movie shows. The opening aerial views and other residential scenes were filmed in Palos Verdes Estates, a beautiful peninsula in southern California, where Chris and Dalton grew up.
2. The plot begins when Chris has returned to his hometown from somewhere where he had been studying. Where had he been?

Answer: Seminary

Christopher left seminary school, leaving a note for the clergy indicating that he had lost his faith. He then moved in with his parents and younger siblings and took up hanging out with his old friend Daulton once again. The religious background pointed to Chris's seeking nature.
3. Soon after returning home, Chris started working at a large telecommunications company. How did he procure this job?

Answer: His father's connections

Chris's father Charlie Boyce was head of security at a major defense contractor, and had also been in the F.B.I. When he saw that his eldest child was at loose ends, Boyce Senior pulled strings with his friends in the defense industry and found Chris a job in the mailroom at RTX. Chris's superiors recognized his innate intelligence and quickly promoted him to work in the Black Vault, handling classified documents for the CIA. Charlie Boyce's conservatism and traditional values were a counterweight to Chris's actions.
4. While Chris began his new line of work, Daulton had been working in another field for quite a while. His lawyer would not approve. What was it?

Answer: Dealing drugs

Daulton Lee was a full-time drug dealer. He had been arrested more than once but had so far avoided any serious jail time.
5. Daulton and his friend Clay would smuggle contraband over the U.S. border on a regular basis. They hid the contraband in an unusual place. What was it?

Answer: Clay's artificial leg

Clay lost the lower part of his leg when was stationed in Vietnam. Before crossing into and out of the U.S. border, he would remove his artificial leg and fill it with drugs or cash, then re-secure it and cross the border with the contraband undetected.
6. Chris's work in the Black Vault made him privy to internal CIA communications. This is how he learned that the CIA was lying to one of the U.S.'s allies, and was a major motivating factor as to why Chris ended up selling secrets to the Russians. Which ally did the CIA betray in the movie?

Answer: Australia

Chris was incensed that the U.S. intelligence agency would break promises and lie to Australia, an ally with whom we fought side-by-side in major wars. Chris learned that the CIA had infiltrated the labor unions in Australia and had probably influenced their elections.

In large part, this is what drove him to sell secret CIA documents to the Russians, thinking he could help equalize the global balance of power by weakening the CIA.
7. It was too risky for Christopher to sell the classified documents directly, so what did he instruct Daulton to do? It involved tracing the steps of Lee Harvey Oswald.

Answer: Go to the Russian Embassy located in Mexico City

Daulton was already used to crossing the border for his drug smuggling business; now he added going to the Russian embassy in Mexico City to his to-do list. After presenting himself at the embassy, Daulton was soon met by a mysterious Russian agent, and thus began the illicit relationship.
8. "Half a league half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred." In a revealing scene with his father, Chris recites parts of a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Can you name it?

Answer: The Charge Of The Light Brigade

Tennyson wrote "The Charge of the Light Brigade" in 1854 about the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War; miscommunication among the commanders sent Britain's light cavalry brigade right into a well-prepared enemy's line of fire, resulting in great loss on the British side.

The scene in the movie is telling. Mr. Boyce wanted Chris to recite the poem, and Chris refused, saying he couldn't remember, despite his father's pressure. As their tempers rose, Chris recited the poem as he walked away from his father. It revealed Mr. Boyce's expectation that people follow his orders, and Chris's discomfort with doing what other people told him to do.
9. The stress of selling secrets to the Russians was affecting both boys and they were on the verge of quitting when they were caught. How were they caught?

Answer: Daulton was arrested in Mexico

While Daulton was in Mexico acting suspiciously around the Russian embassy, he was arrested for killing a policeman, which he did not do. Under intense interrogation, he admitted why he was at the embassy, and the spying was discovered. Daulton was delivered to the police on the U.S. border and, soon after, Chris was arrested while flying his falcon.
10. The Pat Metheny Group and a British artist co-wrote the song "This is Not America" which played at the end of the film while the final credits rolled. Who was the brilliant artist who sang the song, who lived from 1947 to 2016?

Answer: David Bowie

David Bowie's moving recording of "This is Not America", with its haunting lyrics and second vocal line, point to the many layers of betrayal the movie reveals: the U.S. against its allies; Chris and Daulton against the U.S. government agencies; the young men against their families; and eventually the two best friends against each other.
