Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Ives' civilian occupation?

Answer: jockey

This is one of the facts that emerges during the discussion between Hilts and Ives when they are in the cooler.
2. What is the meaning of the one phrase in Russian that Danny knows?

Answer: I love you

Danny and Sedgewick are trying a 'blitz out' amongst the Russian prisoners near the start of the film. Sedgewick asks 'What bloody use is that?' when Danny tells him what the phrase means, and Danny says 'I wasn't planning to use it myself.'
3. Why does Bartlett consider that letting Blythe escape through the tunnel would be risky?

Answer: Blythe is going blind

Colin Blythe, the forger, suffers from progressive myopia. He tries to trick Roger into believing that he can see well enough but is caught out. Hendley convinces Bartlett to allow Colin to escape with him, that he will be his eyes.
4. What number does Danny write on the floor before starting the trap for the first tunnel?

Answer: 17

It is the seventeenth tunnel he has started during his time as a p.o.w.
5. Who does Werner the Ferret describe as a butcher?

Answer: the camp dentist

Werner is telling Hendley about his bad teeth when he makes this less than intelligent comment. He quickly begs Hendley not to repeat what he has said or 'Zzzzt, the Russian Front...'
6. What did Hilts study at college?

Answer: chemical engineering

This is another bit of information from the discussion in the cooler. Ives guesses that he studied physical education, but Hilts replies 'chemical engineering.'
7. What is the name of the train station (the first one we see) near the camp?

Answer: Neustadt

The name of the station can be seen clearly when all of the escapers who have missed their trains are piled up on the platform waiting. (Sagan was the real-life name of the town nearest the camp).
8. How tall is Ives?

Answer: 5' 4"

Another snippet from the cooler conversation. When Hilts asks how tall he is, Ives replies "Five feet four", then asks why Hilts wants to know.
9. Of the following, which one is not a pilot?

Answer: Ives

The other three wear RAF pilot's wings, as do many of the other characters. Ives' half-wing clearly shows the letters AG indicating that he was an Air Gunner.

Please note that Flying Officer was simply Ives' rank, equivalent to a First Lieutenant in the USAAF, and has no bearing on his aircrew duties.
10. What does Roger tell Mac just before they are shot?

Answer: I've never been happier

Bartlett, MacDonald and the others have been let out of the trucks to 'stretch their legs'. Roger says that the tunnelling, planning and the escape have kept him alive. He has just said that he has never been happier when they turn and see the machine gun pointing at them.
