Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name by which the protagonist is known as a child

Answer: Little

"Little" is also the title given to the first part of the movie, flashed up on a darkened screen. We first see Little (Alex Hibbert) being chased by other boys, and hiding from them in a derelict building. It is here that the drug dealer (Mahershala Ali) finds him.

He takes the boy, who has little to say and refuses to say where he lives, first to a fast food place and later to the home of his girlfriend. The youngster eats heartily in both places, but has few words, telling them not much more than his name.
2. Real name of the protagonist

Answer: Chiron

The youngster tells his new friends that his name is Chiron, but that people call him Little, during their first evening together. The second part of the film bears the title "Chiron" and covers his time in High School, by which time he prefers to go by his given name. Ashton Sanders plays Chiron the high school student.
3. Nickname given to the protagonist by his schoolmate

Answer: Black

"Black" also serves as the title for the third part of the film, in which we meet the adult Chiron (Trevante Rhodes). His schoolmate, Kevin, actually gives him the nickname when both are still in high school, telling Chiron "That's my nickname for you" as they sit on the beach together.

After high school the two young men drift apart, but they reunite when Chiron returns to Miami from Atlanta, after an out-of-the-blue phone call from Kevin.
4. Schoolmate who is protagonist's closest thing to a friend his own age

Answer: Kevin

Appearing in all three segments, Kevin is played by Jaden Piner (at age nine), Jharrel Jerome (at age 16) and Andre Holland (as an adult). During the high school segment, Kevin gives the appearance of being a womanizer, yet shares a rather tender love scene with Chiron. Kevin is pressured by others to be abusive to his friend, yet retains a soft spot for him.

When they meet again as adults, Kevin is working as a cook. Chiron states that Kevin is the only man with whom he has ever been intimate.
5. Drug dealer who gives protagonist swimming lessons

Answer: Juan

After their initial meeting, Juan returns Little to his mother's house (once the lad tells him the address). He continues to look out for the youngster, having realised that the mother is one of his customers, and wanting to provide some sort of childhood for the lad. Juan is atypical of most screen drug dealers, in that he seems to care about something other than making money, and seems to have a true rapport with Little.
6. Drug dealer's girlfriend

Answer: Teresa

Teresa (Janelle Monae) supports Juan in his efforts to show Little/Chiron that there is love in his world, even when his mother is too far gone on drugs to show him any. She cooks for him, comforts him when others taunt or harm him and gives him a place to stay when his mother is 'entertaining'.
7. Protagonist's mother

Answer: Paula

Naomie Harris plays the often drug-addled Paula in all three segments, aging appropriately. She professes her love for her son but sometimes pushes him away, to allow her to follow the lifestyle she has chosen. At one point Juan confronts her and she becomes agitated, another time she tells Chiron that Teresa is not his mother, she (Paula) is.

In her final scene with her adult son she appears to want to make amends for all the hurtful things she has said and done, but he is still skeptical.
8. High school bully

Answer: Terrel

Terrel (Patrick Decile) is the ringleader of the group who taunt and bully Chiron, even going so far as to make Kevin hit his friend to stay on the gang's good side. When Chiron won't stay down when punched, the whole group weighs in to kick and hit him until an adult chases them away. Chiron refuses to tell who beat him, but marches into a classroom and breaks a chair over Terrel's back.

The second segment ends with Chiron being arrested and taken away by police.
9. High school teacher

Answer: Pierce

Mr Pierce (Edson Jean) teaches a science class, and in one scene tries to check Terrel in his hate-filled ramblings in which he compared Chiron to a woman. It is also Pierce's class which Chiron enters to retaliate against Terrel, and Pierce is the one who restrains Chiron and holds him for the police.
10. Nickname based on how young black men look in the moonlight

Answer: Blue

Juan tells Little a story about an old woman, who says she will call Juan 'Blue' because that is how his skin looks in the moonlight. Little asks if that is his name, and Juan says that it is not. The screenplay is based on the play "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue" by Tarell Alvin McCraney.
