The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) Quiz

When I first saw this movie I didn't know that it was part of Alexander Dumas' Musketeers saga. Seeing this movie inspired me to read "The Three Musketeers" and all its sequels. All the questions in the quiz are based on the 1998 movie, not the book.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Man in the Iron Mask" is set in 17th century France. Which major characters were played by French actors?

Answer: Porthos, Queen Anne, and Christine

Porthos was played by French actor Gerard Depardieu. Anne Parillaud, who played Queen Anne, and Judith Godreche, who played Christine, were both born in Paris.
Aramis was played by English actor Jeremy Irons. D'Artagnan was played by Gabriel Byrne, who was born in Ireland. King Louis was played by American Leonardo DiCaprio. Athos was played by John Malkovich.
I found the mixed accents in the movie to be somewhat jarring. Depardieu and Irons used the French pronunciation of D'Artagnan, while DiCaprio and Malkovich said Dar-TAN-nyan.
2. Which musketeer was the first to rebel against King Louis?

Answer: Aramis

Aramis was the secret head of the Jesuit order, which accused the King of ignoring the needs of his subjects.
3. What led Athos to oppose the King?

Answer: Louis sent Athos' son Raoul to die at the front

Louis sent Raoul away so that he could pursue Raoul's fiancee Christine. After Athos received notice of Raoul's death he rode to the palace with the intention of killing the king.
4. How was Philippe related to Louis?

Answer: Twin brother

Louis and Philippe were twins, but Philippe was taken away at birth to be raised anonymously. Later he was imprisoned in the Bastille with an iron mask on his face so that no one could see his resemblance to King Louis.
5. Who was Christine?

Answer: Raoul's fiancee, who was seduced by the king

Christine was attracted to King Louis and moved into the palace to be with him, but after she found out that the King had ordered Raoul to be placed in the front lines, she publicly accused Louis of murder. In the books, Raoul's fiancee was named Louise and she remained the King's mistress. I don't know why the name was changed for the movie - perhaps to avoid confusion with Louis?
6. How did Philippe originally get out of the Bastille?

Answer: Aramis rescued him

Aramis took the place of the priest who went every month to hear Philippe's confession. He hid a dead body wearing a similar mask under his robe, which he deposited in Philippe's cell, and told the jailers that Philippe had fallen over dead. When Aramis left the Bastille, Philippe was hidden under his robe.
7. How did Philippe respond to Aramis' plan that he should replace Louis as King of France?

Answer: He asked for a reason why

After Athos explained that the musketeers had always held a common dream to serve a king worthy of the throne, Philippe agreed to the plan.
8. Why did D'Artagnan become suspicious of Philippe at the ball?

Answer: All of these reasons

D'Artagnan had left the ball behind King Louis, and was waiting for the King in the foyer when he heard the cheers of "God Bless the King and the Queen Mother" coming from the ballroom. Queen Anne wouldn't stop to talk to D'Artagnan, but said she would talk to him "tomorrow".

After the King apologized to Christine for any wrongs that he had done, D'Artagnan told his lieutenant to deploy the musketeers and guard all the passages.
9. Did Louis and Philippe ever appear together in a scene?

Answer: yes

Although the same actor played both roles, Louis and Philippe interacted with each other in a scene in the palace, following Philippe's capture. Louis slapped Philippe, and Philippe begged Louis to kill him rather than send him back to prison.
10. Which character died defending Philippe?

Answer: D'Artagnan

D'Artagnan jumped in front of Philippe after Louis threw a dagger at him. He died before completing the muskeeters' slogan "All for one, one for all".

This is VERY different from the way the story goes in the book, but I enjoyed both a great deal.
