The USS Eldridge, a destroyer escort, was commissioned in August, 1943, two months before the events of the movie take place.

Dr. Longstreet is first shown in 1943 making his initial attempt at rendering ships invisible to radar and trying it again in 1984 on a town, contructed by the military, solely for this purpose. Nothing is mentioned about his background, only that he is a civilian scientist working in tandem with the U.S. government to help them win the war against the Axis powers.

The beer bottle and Coke can are the first things they find after walking overnight through the Nevada desert, after the experiment has transported them to 1984.

She is on her way to California when she finds out the job she was supposed to get is no longer available. When electrical charges erupt from Jimmy's hand (as a result of drifting molecules from the experiment), it damages an arcade game. The owner reaches under the counter and pulls a revolver on them, but David gets the upper hand, grabbing the gun out of the man's hand. David then decides to commandeer Allison's car to get out of there. Allison has unfortunately stopped to make a phone call when she gets the bad news about the job.

She later divulges to David that her final destination had been Los Angeles.

Dr. Longstreet compares a photo of the crow's nest taken at the site where Herdeg and Parker appear, along with archival photos of the USS Eldridge and realizes a possible connection.

Dr. Longstreet has ordered the security director, Major Clark (played by Kene Holliday) to bring in Herdeg and Parker. They're found at a local hospital after Alison's car had swerved off the road and crashed into a ditch. Jimmy, appearing to be suffering from some sort of radiation sickness, disappears in a crackle of energy from his hospital bed.

The Marines show up at the hospital but David and Allison manage to give them the slip.

At this point, Herdeg is still not sure what's going on, but decides to go back to his hometown in California to find his dad. It's shown that they stop for the night somewhere along the way and stay at a Best Western motel.

Santa Paula, in Ventura County, is located about 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean. David tells Allison that both he and Jimmy come from Santa Paula, a fact that is already known to Dr. Longstreet, from his past experience with Herdeg and Parker, telling Major Clark to head there to bring Herdeg back to the base.

After arriving in Santa Paula, David and Allison drive into the service station, now selling Texaco gas, that his dad had owned many years before. David is saddened to learn from the service station manager that he died a few years ago, but not before becoming a famous racing car driver. David then decides to try the Parker ranch and comes face to face with an old Jimmy, who doesn't want to see him. Jimmy's wife, Pam, reveals that no one believed the fantastic story that he had travelled into the future, and the Navy had him put away, deemed to be mentally ill.

After David and Allison find Dr. Longstreet, it is learned that he shut down the generators on the ship, an event that has not yet happened. After being brought to the opening of the vortex in an APC (armored personnel carrier)David is sucked inside and finds himself back on his ship.

He proceeds to shut down the generators and after doing so, realizes that he can't return to 1943 and jumps overboard, back to 1984 and to Allison.
