The guy from Athens told Captain Harrison this. Obviously the purpose of the tsunami was to capsize the ship and it was central to the plot of a handful of survivors banding together to make it out of the capsized ship alive. I also want to touch base on a common misconception among fans of the movie. The tidal wave occurred in the Atlantic Ocean, not the Mediterranean.

Linarcos was the owner's representative and ordered full ahead despite Captain Harrison's objection. If he hadn't ordered it, the ship more than likely would not have run into the tidal wave.
Fred Sadoff played Linarcos. Sadoff was born in New York and appeared in "The Quiet American". Arthur O'Connell played Chaplain John, Byron Webster played the purser, and Bob Hastings played the emcee on the ship.

Yes it was the purser! He told Robin earlier in the film that he really ran the ship. His purpose there was to encourage the survivors to stay with him and wait until help arrived.

He grabbed hold of someone but it was too late. The tree fell over and the rest of the survivors drowned (or presumably did). They should have gone with the reverend.

They mentioned it several times. This was also where Belle freaked out and wanted to go back, but Manny encouraged her to go through and she made it. This was just one of many rooms the survivors had to go through to escape the ship.

She told the reverend this right as he was about to swim through the corridor. Unfortunately she could not survive a swim through the corridor and ended up dying while saving the reverend. RIP Belle Rosen.

Reverend Scott was a feisty minister who delivered exciting sermons and was characterized as unorthodox by John the chaplain. He led a handful of passengers through the ship but unfortunately he did not make it out when he let go from the wheel and fell into the fire below.
Mike was the first name of Mr. Rogo, John was the chaplain, and James was Martin's first name.
