Richard Dreyfuss played Roy Neary, a character who was obsessed with aliens after he had an encounter with something unusual. In the story, Roy made his way to Devil's Tower, Wyoming and met many people who went there on the same impulse as his. Eventually, Roy avoided being caught and discovered a secret military operation that was communicating with life from outer space. He witnessed a space craft and musical conversations. Finally, the spacecraft landed and Roy somehow managed to be the only human who got traded for an alien being, much to his glory.
