Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jason Bateman fills in for Michael J. Fox in what 1987 sequel about a supernatural transformation?

Answer: Teen Wolf Too

While the original 1985 film "Teen Wolf" starred Michael J. Fox in his moviemaking prime, "Teen Wolf Too" was released two years later in an attempt to strike the iron while it was hot, and it didn't really turn out to be too great. Jason Bateman took the lead in the sequel (in his first film role) playing Michael J. Fox's cousin who, naturally, possessed the same werewolf genes.

The movie featured a musical number midway through as Bateman and the crew danced to The Contours' "Do You Love Me" for next to no real reason.

The movie flopped critically; while the original made $80,000,000 USD in the box office, the sequel made under $8,000,000.
2. Only Sandra Bullock returned for what 1997 action sequel set on the Seabourn Legend?

Answer: Speed 2: Cruise Control

The original "Speed", released in 1994, was a massive hit, catapulting Keanu Reeves to action stardom and featuring Sandra Bullock, Dennis Hopper, and Jeff Daniels. After the success of the original, only Bullock returned for "Speed 2: Cruise Control" in which she and he partner, aboard a cruise liner, needed to stop a plot to crash the boat into an oil tanker. The stakes are particularly interesting; in a bus that can't go below a certain speed, you can feel the speed, but on a cruise ship...?

The movie suffered from a critical standpoint and cost a ton of money to shoot. It barely recouped its budget, earning less than half its predecessor's take in the box office, and received a 4% score on Rotten Tomatoes, being nominated for eight Razzies.
3. By the time this 1997 family sequel was released, Macaulay Culkin was too old to play the lead role. What movie, about a home invasion gone wrong, is it?

Answer: Home Alone 3

Though "Home Alone" (1990) and "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" (1992) were massively popular and starred Macaulay Culkin in the starring role as Kevin McCallister. Culkin grew up through the 1990s, quickly becoming too old for people to worry about being 'home alone', even if he was facing off against criminals. It meant that those who continued the series had to find a new kid to smarten up thieves, and they put young Alex D. Linz in that role, having him protect his home against four crooks looking to collect an expensive computer chip.

The movie was still popular, but panned, and the series got worse as time went on. A fourth movie, "Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House", went straight to video in 2002 while a fifth, "Home Sweet Home Alone", released directly onto Disney+ in 2021.
4. Subtitled 'Book of Shadows', what 2000 horror sequel was not filmed in the woods with handheld cameras like its popular predecessor?

Answer: Blair Witch 2

After "The Blair Witch Project" became the top-grossing independent horror film of all time when it released to theatres in 1999, studios scrambled to pull together a sequel. Unfortunately, director/writer Joe Berlinger didn't keep the spirit of the original, instead making a highly-produced continuation of the story as seen through the eyes of a handful of students researching the Blair Witch legend and the story of those who went missing in the woods of Maryland.

The sequel took in 20% of the original's box office intake and it would be nearly twenty years before anyone attempted to make another sequel-- simply titled "Blair Witch". Neither was particularly well-received.
5. Set in a U.S. town, a far cry from Antarctica in the first film, what 2007 head-to-head movie sequel was subtitled 'Requiem'?

Answer: Alien vs. Predator

While the 2004 horror mash-up "Alien vs. Predator" built upon the interesting premise created by the 1989 comic book series based upon the "Alien" and "Predator" series of the 1970s and 1980s by bringing humans to Antarctica to get caught in the dangerous game laid out for extraterrestrial warriors, "Alien vs. Predator: Requiem" directed that attention back home, bringing the bad guys to a small Colorado town.

Though "Alien vs. Predator: Requiem" took in a ton at the box office, it was very poorly received by critics and viewers alike with the series being shelved altogether in favour of both franchises returning to their roots.
6. Jim Carrey was out and Jamie Kennedy was in for what 2005 sequel featuring Alan Cumming as the Trickster God, Loki?

Answer: Son of the Mask

The original 1994 film "The Mask", which starred Jim Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss, was based on a series of absurd DC Comics and embraced the general weirdness and physicality that Carrey is known for bringing to many of his earlier roles. "Son of the Mask", however, took things in a different direction with Jamie Kennedy taking the mask for a spin along with his newborn and his dog while Loki, the Trickster God, sought to retrieve the accessory and return it to Odin.

The movie lost tens of millions in the box office and received universal disdain from critics.

It was nominated for seven Razzies but lost Worst Picture.
7. Hilary Swank took her first starring role in what 1994 film, taking on a mantle previously held by Ralph Macchio?

Answer: The Next Karate Kid

Though the "Karate Kid" franchise was immensely popular throughout the mid-to-late 1980s, when the time came for a fourth movie in the series, Ralph Macchio grew too old to continue being the 'kid' of the title. This, coupled with poor reception of the third movie, led to producers rebooting the series for the fourth; in 1994, Hilary Swank took her first leading role as "The Next Karate Kid" and it was a massive flop, barely recouping its budget and taking the ire of critics and viewers alike.

In 2010, Jaden Smith would become the new Karate Kid in another reboot featuring Jackie Chan. The original continuity would continue on the Netflix TV show "Cobra Kai".
8. Similar to the movies of the "Look Who's Talking" series, what 2004 film sequel, earning a rare 0% score from Rotten Tomatoes, features talking infants?

Answer: Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2

Though both "Baby Geniuses" and "Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2" were filmed by well-established director Bob Clark (known for "Black Christmas" and "Porky's"), it didn't make them any less odd. Both movies featured infants with CGI mouths speaking as though with the intelligence of fully-grown humans.

The second movie took it a step further, giving the babies extra powers to fight evildoers. The sequel was reviled, receiving the rare 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving the Razzie nomination for Worst Picture.

It would be Bob Clark's final movie before his passing in 2007.
9. The wizard Merlin and King Arthur both appeared in what UK-set, 2017 Michael Bay film featuring a climactic battle at Stonehenge?

Answer: Transformers: The Last Knight

By the time "The Last Knight" came around, the "Transformers" series not only had the world somewhat saved a few times over, but stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox had already moved on to other projects. Michael Bay plodded onward, however, with this fifth film in the series, taking the Transformers to England and infusing them with elements of Arthurian Legend.

This movie saw the return of Mark Wahlberg and Josh Duhamel, but also featured Stanley Tucci as Merlin (yes, that Merlin) and Anthony Hopkins.

It was nominated for ten Razzies.
10. Michael Jordan didn't come back, but Bugs Bunny did for what 2021 pseudo-animated sports movie released twenty-five years after its predecessor?

Answer: Space Jam: A New Legacy

While the original "Space Jam", released in 1996, may hold a bit of nostalgic value for kids of that decade, it was always a quick basketball movie combining the fun of the Looney Tunes with the unprecedented capability to merchandise toys, shoes, and basketball equipment. "Space Jam: A New Legacy" brought nearly all of this back twenty-five years later, replacing Michael Jordan with LeBron James and having him beat bad guys in a basketball game in a Warner Bros.-themed multiverse. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie was released in theatres simultaneously with HBO Max.

While this could have been the cause of low box office turn-out, it might just be that the movie wasn't that great; critics disliked its carelessness and emptiness.
