These were the children of a man named Thorpe (whose first name we're never given), the wealthy and well-known banker who Papa Justify and Mama Cecile worked for. The servants cared for the children in addition to their other work. The children were also the first victims of Papa Justify's Conjure of Sacrifice. We learn the childrens' names when Violet tells Caroline the story of Mama Cecile and Papa Justify and how they were murdered.

After a violent struggle between Caroline and Violet, by the stairs, Caroline manages to push Violet over the stair railing. Violet drops straight to the floor, two flights down, breaking both of her legs. But Violet manages to reach the attic anyway, by pulling herself into the elevator and going up that way.

Violet says this to Caroline, but it is Mama Cecile who is actually saying it while she's inside Violets body. Of course we don't learn the importance of the line until much later in the movie, when we learn that Mama Cecile has already had the Conjure of Sacrifice performed on her twice, before she takes Caroline's body and, thus, her remaining years- her time.

Caroline finds a variety of odd things in the hoodoo room, but a shrunken head is not one of them. One of the things she does find, though, is the record that holds the spell for the Conjure of Sacrifice.

The Conjure of Sacrifice is a spell in which you sacrifice someone and take the years that they have left to live for yourself. Papa Justify is the one who created this very powerful spell, which is legendary in the bayou around Terrabone Parish.

The spell requires chalk to draw the circle on the floor and sulper, to be spread around the circle. Caroline had to use her own blood to complete the spell. Though brick dust is mentioned and used for protection throughout the movie, bone dust is never mentioned.

Hoodoo only works if the persons involved believe in it. This is the essential element in the Conjure of Sacrifice. The one being sacrificed has to believe in the magic of hoodoo for the spell to work. Jill is the first one to explain this to Caroline. Jill tells Caroline while they are at the club that she knows this because she has an aunt who practices hoodoo.

There is no blood required for the cleansing spell that Caroline tries to perform on Ben. The spell begins to work, but Caroline is stopped from completing it by Violet banging on the locked door and then coming in. But while the spell is working, Ben manages to speak to Caroline and when she asks him who he is afraid of, he points at Violet just as she bursts through the door.

Voodoo is a religion with gods and goddesses and tenets of the religion.  Hoodoo is simply American folk magic that originated in New Orleans; it has nothing to do with religion. Jill explains this to Caroline after Caroline finds the hoodoo room.

Caroline lays a line of brick dust across the entrance to her room, which keeps both Luke and Violet from being able to enter her room. This is because when you lay down the line of brick dust, it can't be crossed by your enemies.

Caroline uses a clear, unidentified liquid for the purpose. She injects it into the sugar cubes first, but Violet doesn't use any in her tea. This is odd because Violet always uses sugar in her tea. We know this because when Violet doesn't drink any of her spiked tea Caroline says "But you always have sugar with your tea." Since her plan doesn't work, Caroline waits until Violet leaves the room for a minute and simply pours some of the liquid into Violet's glass.

Through the Conjure of Sacrifice, Mama Cecile takes Caroline's body, and the years that Caroline has left to live. Violet is simply another of Mama Cecile's victims; her body and years of life taken from her also, years ago.

Mama Cecile says this to Caroline, who lays crying and unable to move on the floor, just after Mama Cecile takes Caroline's body through the Conjure of Sacrifice. Caroline isn't killed by the sacrifice, she trades bodies with Mama Cecile (who was in Violet's body at the time). So now Caroline is in Violet's body. Mama Cecile says this to explain to Caroline (and the audience) that though the spell is called The Conjure of Sacrifice, there is no immediate death, but a trade instead.

The spell doesn't kill you instantly, but instead you end up in another body, usually one with very little time left to live.
