The advertisement is answered by a penguin, whose name (we later discover) is Feathers McGraw. He rapidly insinuates himself into the household, sneakily supplanting Gromit in Wallace's affections.

The room which Wallace intends to let out for the lodger is dirty and badly furnished, with peeling wallpaper. Not surprisingly, Feathers McGraw finds Gromit's comfortable room much more to his liking.

By putting a red rubber glove on his head, Feathers McGraw magically transforms his appearance into that of a chicken. The disguise is apparently so convincing that even the usually astute Gromit is fooled, until Feathers whips off the glove to reveal his true identity.

We see Gromit watching Feathers through a hole he has cut in the side of a large cardboard box. Just when it looks as if Feathers may have spotted him, the camera reveals that the box has a picture of a dog on it, and that Gromit has cut the hole just where the eyes of the dog pictured on the box should be. Fooled by this disguise, Feathers walks away.

We first that see that the trousers are able to walk up walls and ceilings when Gromit is using them to decorate the spare room. It is this that gives the dastardly Feathers McGraw the idea to use them as part of his nefarious plan.

The technically-adept Feathers adds a remote-control device to the trousers, which enables him to control them while they are worn by a sleeping Wallace. By additionally furnishing Wallace with a helmet containing a mechanical grab, Feathers manages to steal the diamond, despite accidentally setting off the museum's alarm system.

Answer: Train

The train track that runs through the house is first seen at the start of the film, delivering one of Gromit's birthday presents. By this means, it is neatly signposted as a feature of the house, before the exciting chase sequence later on.

Answer: Milk bottle

More by luck than judgment, an empty milk bottle rolls into Gromit's paws just in time to catch Feathers McGraw as he flies through the air into the kitchen. Thus captured, he is delivered to the local zoo, towed by the mechanical trousers.

At the end of the film, the trousers are seen to have been unceremoniously thrown into a dustbin. However, as the credits roll they are seen to walk off into the sunset by themselves, the dustbin perched on top.
