Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which animated movie did a small fish, along with some new friends, plot an escape from a dentist's fish tank in order to get back to his home in the ocean?

Answer: Finding Nemo

In "Finding Nemo" (2003) a young clownfish named Nemo was captured by a scuba diver/dentist and placed in his fish tank. While Nemo's father and his friend Dory were busy searching the ocean for Nemo, Nemo's new friends in the fish tank helped him to get out so he could get back to the ocean and be reunited with his dad.

This was accomplished by Nemo escaping down the drain of the dentist's sink, which led to the ocean.
2. In which of these movies did Shadow, Chance and Sassy have an adventure finding their way home after thinking their family had left them behind?

Answer: Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

In the 1993 movie, based on a 1961 novel by Sheila Burnford, a family left their beloved pets at the ranch of a friend while going on vacation. The pets didn't know the family was coming back for them and escaped from the ranch to find their family. On their long journey, they had encounters with bears, mountain lions and porcupines, as well as running into problems with crossing rivers and falling into mud pits.

At one point they were taken in at an animal shelter and their family was called to come get them, but again, the pets didn't realize this and escaped again.

At the end of the film, they finally made it all the way to their family's home, a little tired and slightly injured, but safe.
3. In what 1982 film did the title character want to "phone home", and manage to on Halloween night?

Answer: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

In Steven Spielberg's blockbuster hit, a young boy named Elliot found and befriended an alien who had been left behind on Earth by his people. Throughout the movie, E.T. wanted to make contact with his home. On Halloween, Elliott and his brother disguised E.T. as a ghost and took him to the forest so he could call home.

In the end, E.T.'s people came back to get him, and he and Elliot rode Elliot's bike through the sky to get to the spaceship so that E.T. could return home.
4. All three installments in this animated film series fit the theme of this quiz to some degree. For example, in the second movie Woody was picked up at a garage sale and his friends had to help him get home to Andy's bedroom. What trilogy does this describe?

Answer: Toy Story

Woody, voiced by Tom Hanks, was one of the stars of the "Toy Story" trilogy. In all three movies, Woody (and often one or more of his friends) faced the challenge of being out in the world, needing to get home to his owner, Andy. In the first film (1995), Woody and the newcomer to Andy's toy collection, Buzz Lightyear, had to find their way home after accidentally being left behind at a gas station.

In "Toy Story 2" (1999), as mentioned in the question, Woody was taken by the owner of a toy store who wanted to complete his collection of "Woody's Round-Up" toys.

His friends came to rescue him and they eventually made it back to Andy's room, along with new friends Jessie and Bullseye. Finally, in "Toy Story 3" (2010) a grown-up Andy mistakenly threw out most of his toys, and shocked at being abandoned by him, they decided to donate themselves to a daycare to be played with. Woody went with the rest of them to the daycare to try to explain that Andy didn't really throw them out, but they wouldn't listen. Woody then tried to get home on his own, but had to go back to the daycare to rescue his friends when he learned that the daycare was a terrible place for toys to be.

The toys did make it home to Andy's room once more, but since he was going away to college, Woody and the rest of the gang found a new home with a little girl named Bonnie.
5. In which classic Christmas film did George Bailey realize his life in Bedford Falls was not so bad?

Answer: It's a Wonderful Life

In Frank Capra's 1946 classic, main character George Bailey, played by James Stewart, was depressed over a business mistake committed by his partner as well as more generally over the fact that he thought his life didn't matter. George was prepared to commit suicide on Christmas Eve when Clarence, his guardian angel, showed him how worse off his friends, family and small town would have been if George Bailey had never existed. George decided he wanted to live and learned to appreciate the quiet but meaningful life he had.
6. In which of these animated features did Mike and Sully need to track down a certain bedroom door to send a little girl back home?

Answer: Monsters, Inc.

Mike and Sully (voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman) were the main monsters in the 2001 Disney-Pixar movie. They worked at Monsters, Inc. where they supplied power to the city of Monstropolis by entering kids' bedrooms at night and bottling their screams.

When Sully found a bedroom door left on the work floor after hours, he entered the bedroom and accidentally brought the little girl, nicknamed Boo, back into the monster world with him. He and Mike had to hide Boo from the other monsters and discreetly find her bedroom door again to send her back, which they eventually did, but not before discovered that kids' laughter provided more power than their screams.
7. In which chick flick did Melanie Carmichael return to her home town of Pigeon Creek and find that everything she'd left behind was exactly what she wanted?

Answer: Sweet Home Alabama

Melanie Smooter had left Pigeon Creek, Alabama when she was young and moved to New York City. She changed her last name to Carmichael, became a fashion designer and hid her small town roots from the new people in her life. When her boyfriend Andrew proposed marriage, Melanie accepted but had to set off to Alabama because, as it turned out, she was still married to her childhood sweetheart and needed to secure a divorce once and for all. Jake, her husband, delayed signing the papers, leading to Melanie staying in Alabama longer than she planned.

While there, she came to appreciate the place and the people she'd left behind and she ultimately chose to break up with Andrew and stay with Jake. Reese Witherspoon starred as Melanie in this 2002 movie.
8. Based on a '70s TV series, which of these films saw Dr. Rick Marshall, Holly and Will having a heck of a time getting back to their own world after falling into a time warp?

Answer: Land of the Lost

Holly, a PhD student, tracked down Dr. Marshall to show him evidence (a fossil) that his theory about time warps, previously thought ridiculous by his critics, might actually be right. She convinced him to go on a field expedition with her to check it out; Will was their tour guide who took them on a rafting tour of the cave where Holly had found the fossil evidence. Dr. Marshall's device, the tachyon amplifier, made the cave collapse, causing the trio to fall into a time warp.

After dealing with disgruntled dinosaurs and a tribe of unfriendly lizard men, among other things, Holly and Dr. Marshall managed to make it back to their own time period on Earth (Will decided to stay behind with his new friend Cha-Ka) to prove to everyone that Dr. Marshall had been right. Will Ferrell played the role of Dr. Rick Marshall and Anna Friel appeared as Holly.
9. In which early '90s family movie did a young boy named Jesse befriend a wild animal and eventually remove the animal from captivity to be reunited with his family?

Answer: Free Willy

In the 1993 movie, Jesse had been abandoned by his parents as a young child and lived a life of crime and mischief. After vandalizing an amusement park, he was placed in foster care and was made to work at the park to make up for the vandalism. At the park, Jesse met Willy, an orca whale, who had been separated from his family and placed in the tank at the amusement park to put on shows for spectators. Jesse and Willy became good friends, and Jesse's job became to train and play with Willy.

When Jesse learned that the park's owner wanted Willy dead to collect insurance money, Jesse and his friend, a Native man named Randolph, planned to set Willy free and reunite him with his family, who could be heard calling to Willy from the ocean. Willy was almost free when the park's owner and a group of whalers caught up with them, but Jesse, using a training command, helped Willy to jump over a wall of rocks, and Willy was freed.
10. In which of these all-time classic movies did a young girl have to chant this quiz's title, "There's no place like home", while wearing sparkly red shoes in order to be returned home to Kansas?

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

In the iconic 1939 film, Dorothy (played by Judy Garland) found herself stuck in the enchanted land of Oz after a tornado blew her house away. With the help of a Scarecrow, Tin Man, a Cowardly Lion and her dog Toto, Dorothy had to overcome obstacles to getting home such as the Wicked Witch and her band of flying monkeys, a field of poppies that tried to put Dorothy to sleep permanently and a wizard who turned out to be an ordinary man. Finally, with the help of Glinda the Good Witch, who told Dorothy to tap the heels of the ruby slippers together three times and say, "There's no place like home" until she was home, Dorothy found herself back in her bedroom in Kansas, with her Aunt Em telling her she'd just been having a dream.
