Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Mary Poppins' won a heap of Oscars at the 1966 ceremony, including one for Best Song. In my opinion, several of the songs would qualify, but which one got the nod from the Academy?

Answer: Chim Chim Cher-ee

'Chim Chim Cher-ee' is sung by Bert, the chimney sweep, played by Dick van Dyke, extolling the joys of clambering about in chimneys.

'Feed the Birds' is a lovely little song, and my personal favourite. 'Let's Go Fly a Kite', 'Step in Time' and 'Jolly Holiday' are all fun tunes, too. Julie Andrews won Best Actress for her performance, and deservedly so!
2. 'Paint Your Wagon' is a very enjoyable movie with Lee Marvin stealing the show from a young Clint Eastwood. It was panned by the critics, but it had some great songs in it. One featured several of the gold miners singing 'The Best Things in Life Are ___'. What is the missing word?

Answer: Dirty

Muck, mud, bog and crud are all good. Why? Because that is where the gold is! Ben (Lee Marvin) and Partner (Clint Eastwood) sang this song about the perils of working underground. If you like the movie, please play the quiz I wrote about it!
3. 'The King and I' was set in 1860s Siam (now Thailand), and tells the story of Anna Leonowens and her ongoing relationship with the King. What was the King's name?

Answer: Mongkut

The character was based on the real-life king, whose full name was Phra Bat Somdet Phra Poramenthramaha Mongkut Phra Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua! The movie king had numerous wives, and 82 little princes and princesses. There are a few great songs, too, with 'Getting To Know You' and 'Shall We Dance' being at the top of my personal jukebox.

Yul Brynner was magnificent as the King, and Deborah Kerr was the perfect British school teacher, who had the spine to stand up for herself.

Mpande was the Zulu king in the same era, Old King Cole was a nursery rhyme, and King Kong was a rather large gorilla, who gave New Yorkers a hard time in the 1930s.
4. 'West Side Story' is your typical 'Romeo and Juliet' tragedy with Tony Wyzek (Richard Beymer) and Maria Nunez (Natalie Wood) playing the title roles. The film won an amazing 10 Oscars in 1962, including Best Picture. Natalie Wood was not a strong singer, so her voice was dubbed over by which concert soprano?

Answer: Marni Nixon

Nixon was very much in demand, being heard (but not seen) in 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', 'The King and I', 'My Fair Lady' and 'An Affair to Remember'. Marni died in 2016. Beymer's voice was also dubbed, by Jimmy Bryant.

Callas and Caldwell were both associated with opera, Callas as a soprano and Caldwell as a conductor. Morvan was one half of the infamous Milli Vanilli.

Did you know that Elvis was asked to audition for the role of Tony, but declined?
5. 'Oklahoma!', the movie, was released in 1955, and based on various stage productions. It starred Gordon MacRae as Curly and Shirley Jones as Laurey. One of the many fine songs mentions a mode of transport in its title. What sort of vehicle is it?

Answer: Surrey

'The Surrey with the Fringe on Top' is a horsedrawn carriage with four wheels. Other well-known songs from the movie are 'People Will Say We're In Love', 'Oh What a Beautiful Morning' and the title track. The film won the Oscar for Best Music in a Musical.
6. 'The Sound of Music' is probably one of the best-known (and best-loved) of all musicals. The story of the von Trapp children and Maria, their 'flibbertigibbet' governess, has enchanted kids of all ages for decades. One of the songs in the movie is 'My Favourite Things'; what was the reason that Maria sang the song with the children?

Answer: Thunderstorm

The kids were all spooked by the storm and all piled into Maria's room. I am sure everyone knows the words - things like raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles, warm woolen mittens, noodles and strudels will make you feel better. 'A Spoonful of Sugar' from 'Mary Poppins' echoed similar thoughts.

There are many songs that I like in this movie, but it is hard to go past the sheer fun of 'The Lonely Goatherd', complete with yodelling goats.
7. 'The Blues Brothers' starred John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as Jake and Elwood Blues. They are trying to raise money for an orphanage, but in the process, they tread on a lot of toes. When they perform at Bob's Country Bunker, which song do they NOT play?

Answer: Quando, Quando, Quando

Whilst on their 'Mission from God', the boys are being targetted by Jake's ex-girlfriend, the Good Ol' Boys, whose gig they stole at the Country Bunker, the Illinois Nazis, the National Guard and the State Troopers.

'Gimme Some Lovin' did not really appeal to the patrons, as it was not Country OR Western. The sappy 'Quando, Quando, Quando' was done by Murph and the Magic Tones, performing to an empty room at the Holiday Inn.

There were some terrific blues numbers in the movie- 'Minnie the Moocher', 'Sweet Home, Chicago', 'Think'. The car chase scenes are classics, too!

This is probably one of my favourite all-time movies.
8. 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' was a rather raunchy musical, released in 1975, and has gained a cult status around the world. The opening song was 'Science Fiction/Double Feature' which referred to several B movies. Which of these pairs of movies was NOT mentioned in the lyrics?

Answer: 'Planet of the Apes' and 'The Blob'

'Planet of the Apes' and 'The Blob' were not mentioned, but could have been. The song is a spoof of the science/horror genre popular in the 1940s and '50s. There were several other movies referred to, including 'Doctor X', 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', 'Night of the Demon'.

The movie ran for many years in midnight screenings, with the audience getting into the act - throwing confetti during the wedding scene, 'Time Warp'-ing in the aisles, dressing up in costume. For some people, it became a Friday night ritual.

Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick starred. The author of the book and movie, Richard O'Brien, played Riff-Raff. Meat Loaf had a smaller part, too. Sexual overtones abound in the movie, which may explain its popularity.
9. Touted as the first rock opera, 'Tommy' hit the screens in 1975. It starred Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who, in the title role. He became deaf, dumb and blind when he saw his father murdered by his future step-father, and many methods were tried to cure him. Tina Turner tried her own brand of treatment - what was her character name and the name of her song?

Answer: The Acid Queen

Turner's song was rather unsettling, as she pumped Tommy and herself full of LSD. It did not cure Tommy, though.

'Tommy' has a star-studded cast, with names like Jack Nicholson, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Ann-Margret, Oliver Reed, Keith Moon.

'Eyesight to the Blind' was performed by Clapton, and involved a sect that deified Marilyn Monroe, 'Sparks' is when Tommy discovers his talent for playing pinball and Sally Simpson was a young fan of Tommy's who suffered a badly cut face at his concert.

I was lucky enough to be at the Sydney grand opening of 'Tommy', and saw several of the stars on the red carpet. The movie may be a bit dated now, but it is still in my Top Ten.
10. 'Grease' was the word in 1978, propelling Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta to stardom. A story of young love between a goody two-shoes and a tough gang member, with one of the highlights being a car race between Danny and rival gang member, Leo. Danny was a member of the T-Birds, but who did Leo hang with?

Answer: Scorpions

According to Leo, the leader of the Scorpions, 'the only rule is... there ain't no rules!'

Danny drove Greased Lightning, a souped up '48 Ford, and of course he won the race. At the end of the movie, he won the girl. Ain't love grand? Leo was played by Dennis Stewart, who died in 1994.

The Sharks and Jets were the rival gangs in 'West Side Story' and the Dead Rabbits featured in the movie 'Gangs of New York'.

As usual, there are some great songs in the movie - 'Hopelessly Devoted to You', 'You're the One That I Want' and 'Summer Nights' all being released as singles. Other good songs are 'Beauty School Dropout' and 'Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee', performed by Stockard Channing.
