Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jason Isaac played the voices of two characters in Disney's non-animated film "Peter Pan" (2003). His first voice was of Wendy's father. Which other voice did Jason Isaac play, starring the pirate villain who has one hooked hand?

Answer: Captain Hook

Jason Isaac ironically played Wendy's father and Captain Hook. As the children's father he was loving and kind. Captain Hook was the nemesis of the story's hero, Peter Pan.

Hook vowed to kill Peter Pan for cutting off his hand and feeding it to an alligator named Tic Toc. Tic Toc was always following Hook, hungry for the rest of the pirate. It was to Hook's advantage that the alligator also swallowed an alarm clock. The alarm clock constantly ticked and rang every time the alligator was near, giving Hook the alert the alligator was chasing him.

The character of Captain Hook was more comical than scary. Walt Disney told the creators not to kill Captain Hook off because he predicted fans would love him rather than hate him.
2. Lucille LaVerne voiced the evil queen and the wicked witch on Disney's animated classic, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". What unusual tactic did Lucille LaVerne use to interchange her characters' voices?

Answer: She took her false teeth out.

Lucille LaVerne was a well known stage actress before being selected to play Disney's first princess villain role.

Originally Lucille LaVerne was selected just to play one of the parts. Directors and producers worried she was too old to give life to the younger queen voice and play the older woman voice at the same time. Her composure, experience, and vocal range convinced Walt Disney to give her both vocal parts for the evil queen and her old lady disguise.

When Lucille LaVerne was recording her lines, she was not satisfied with her production of the wicked witch. She took a break and excused herself to the restroom. She returned and redid her performance in a perfect haggish voice. When she was asked what she did to transform into the part of an old woman, she told the production crew she had removed her false teeth.

The lack of dentures gave the "old lady" voice a wet sound. The effect of her jaws collapsing gave it the perfect effect for a hag voice. To influence her inspiration, LaVerne performed her vocal roles with a cape on.
3. Eleanor Audley voiced two classic Disney villainesses. One of her roles the wicked stepmother, Lady Tremaine, in "Cinderella". What was the name of the evil witch Eleanor Audley voiced in "Sleeping Beauty"?

Answer: Maleficent

Eleanor Audley's portrayal of Lady Tremaine's cold demeanor in "Cinderella" influenced the producers to give her the role of Maleficent in "Sleeping Beauty". Lady Tremaine and Maleficent have a similar likeness because animators used Audley's facial features and movements for in both live action designs.

Audley initially turned down the role of Maleficent because she was sick with tuberculosis. She struggled with tuberculosis through the filming of "Sleeping Beauty" but she gave her best performance.
4. Sir Patrick Stewart was offered the role to play Jafar in Disney's 1992 animated "Aladdin" film. He had to turn it down due to conflicting schedules with his role in "Star Trek".

Answer: True

While he was filming "Star Trek: The Next Generation", Sir Patrick Stewart was approached for vocalizing Cogsworth for "Beauty and the Beast" and Jafar in "Aladdin". He had to turn both roles down because of scheduling conflicts with his commitment to "Star Trek".

Sir Patrick Stewart did eventually star in a Disney film in 2005, when he lent his voice to the role of Mr. Woolensworth in "Chicken Little".

Sir Patrick Stewart campaigned for the role of Jafar again when Disney turned "Aladdin" into a live action film but he didn't get the role.
5. Jim Cummings voiced Ed the hyena on "The Lion King" and played another well known Disney character. Which of these characters is the "silly old bear" that lives in the 100 acre Woods, who has a friend named Christopher Robin?

Answer: Winnie the Pooh

Two of Jim Cummings most well known villain roles were Ed the hyena from "The Lion King" and Razoul from "Aladdin".

He has voiced both Winnie the Pooh and Tigger in various movies since 1988.

Other Disney movie roles he has starred in include Colonel Hathi (the elephant leader from "The Jungle Book"), Tony ("Lady and the Tramp II"), King Triton ("Ariel's Beginning"), King James ("Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World"), and Pyros ("Hercules").
6. In Disney's animated "The Little Mermaid", Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel, also voiced Vanessa, the human Ursula transforms into to trick Prince Eric.

Answer: True

Jodi Benson played the voice of the villain at a part in the movie. Ursula had to steal Ariel's voice to impersonate her.

Prince Eric searched for the singing "voice", similar to the prince that searched for Cinderella and her shoe. Ursula, the sea witch, used Ariel's stolen voice to ensure that Ariel did not get her prince. She became a human with Ariel's voice and tried to win Prince Eric's love.

Prince Eric's kiss would have broken the spell for Ariel and allowed her to be human forever. If Ariel failed she would be cursed to be a slug in Ursula's garden of "poor unfortunate souls". Ursula wanted Ariel to fail so that her father, King Triton, would give up his throne to save her.
7. In "101 Dalmatians", Horace and Jasper were watching a crime show with the stolen puppies. What was the name of the game show where the contestants were asked to guess the crime?

Answer: What's My Crime

The dalmatian puppies loved the television at their home with Anita and Rodger. When they were kidnapped Horace and Jasper used the television to keep the puppies distracted and entertained, until they had further instructions from their boss Cruella about their job.

Horace and Jasper are thieves. Their favorite show is "What's My Crime" because the game show hosts criminals that pitch clues to players. If the players cannot guess the crime before the clock runs out or before they run out of guesses, the criminal wins a vacation and money when their time is finished being served . If the player guesses the crime, they earn the money and vacation.

Horace and Jasper were occupied watching the show "What's My Crime" when Cruella burst in on them, angered that they had not "killed the little brutes". They wanted to finish the show because they recognized the criminal contestant as one of their friends.
8. The Disney villain Hades from "Hercules", was originally created to be a serious devil character. What humourous role did James Wood portray Hades as in his audition, causing the directors to rethink the entire character?

Answer: a car salesman

James Woods took the character in his audition and put a comical spin on it. Instead of a scary dark overlord, Woods portrayed Hades as a sarcastic, sleazy, car salesman. He portrayed his character as someone who talked fast and liked to make a good deal. His character also had a sense of competition and humor. The producers liked it so much they rewrote the script and offered the role to James Woods.

Disney redid Hades' color scheme from red flames to blue to make the character less scary for children. Hades was portrayed as a gloomy character, but Woods brought humor to his role. As Lord of the Underworld, he constantly makes deals with Hercules and Meg. He also loves watching the monsters compete against Hercules as a game.
9. Jeremy Irons, the actor of Scar in Disney's animated "The Lion King", blew out his voice singing "Be Prepared" with the hyenas. Who did Disney recruit to impersonate Scar's voice and finish the song?

Answer: Jim Cummings, the voice of Ed the hyena

Jeremy Irons blew out his voice while singing "Be Prepared". After he belted out the line, "You won't get a sniff without me", Irons was incapable of finishing the song. Jim Cummings, the voice of Ed, had to come in and mimic Scar's vocals for the last third of the song.

Similar to stuntmen, Disney has used Jim Cummings' talent as a singer, to step in as a vocal imitator for many actors that needed support in singing roles.

In "Pocahontas", Cummings was the singing voice for Kekta, the village Shaman and medicine man. He also stepped in and did the singing vocals for Pocahontas's father.
10. Most of Disney's animated princess films had a female villain. Which animated film, featuring an inventor's daughter and a cursed prince, was the first Disney princess movie to have a male villain?

Answer: Beauty and the Beast

Gaston was the first male villain to appear in a Disney princess movie.

Gaston is an arrogant and narcissistic hunter. While all the other girls fawn over him, Gaston wants a challenge. He tells his assistant, LeFou, that Belle is the only girl for him. He views Belle's rejections as Belle playing hard to get. When he finds out Belle has fallen in love with a beast, he is angered. He tries to to kill the Beast, but falls off the castle tower.

The original fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont did not have Gaston. The original fairy tale consisted of a drama between Beauty, Beast, and her family. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton created Gaston based on her ex-boyfriends, and Disney felt that the story could benefit from a strong relentless villain.
