Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this 1999 film starring Keanu Reeves, phone calls were important for characters to 'jack in' and 'jack out'. What movie is this?

Answer: The Matrix

Heavy on the technology allusions, "The Matrix" made use of numerous phones in its filming whether for communication or travel between 'the matrix' itself or the real world of Zion. With an operator on the Zion end, Neo, Trinity, and others could jack in and jack out at appropriate times to enter the computerized world we live in. Killing someone in the matrix, unfortunately, kills them in Zion though, and while the characters are essentially avatars of their real selves, they can come to harm in both planes.

This motif of the movie is seen in all three "Matrix" films and the original movie ends with Neo speaking on the phone. "The Matrix", starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne, was directed by the Wachowski Brothers, earning over $450,000,000 after its 1999 release.

The series has since grossed over $1.6 billion and become immersed into popular culture.
2. In 1954, Alfred Hitchcock released a thriller based on a stageplay of the same name. Following a tennis player plotting to kill his wife, what is the movie's title?

Answer: Dial M For Murder

Creating your own movie titles about tennis, phones, and murder isn't easy. Luckily, Hitchcock could leave the tennis stuff at the door in making 1954's "Dial M For Murder". Starring Ray Milland and Grace Kelly, the movie has received a lot of reputation from the American Film Institute for its significance in the mystery and thriller genres.

In 1998, the film was remade as "A Perfect Murder" starring Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow, earning over $60,000,000 in the box office. The original film earned almost $1,500,000.

The phone is a recurring motif in the film and appears at crucial points in the original murder plan.
3. Starring Chris Evans (on a cell phone for the entire movie) and Kim Basinger, what 2004 thriller involved a kidnapped woman and the one call that saved her life?

Answer: Cellular

Directed by David R. Ellis (also known for "Final Destination 2 and 4" and "Snakes on a Plane"), "Cellular" placed Kim Basinger in a sticky situation (and saved her with her extensive knowledge of phone reconstruction) and forced Chris Evans to help out, and boy was he a trooper. Basinger's character got through to Chris Evans' cell phone by chance after her kidnappers destroyed the only phone nearby and after convincing him that she needed help, persuaded him to save her life.

The film, despite so-so ratings, earned over $50,000,000 in the box office and propelled Chris Evans' career further than "Not Another Teen Movie" ever could. Good call! We can only imagine that bill he received after...
4. Colin Farrell is pretty much trapped in this 2003 film about a man kept at a phone by a sniper (played by Kiefer Sutherland). What is the movie's title?

Answer: Phone Booth

Directed by Joel Schumacher (who also directed "The Number 23", "8mm", and "The Lost Boys"), "Phone Booth" involved Colin Farrell answering a phone in a booth on a busy street. When the man on the other line told him that he had a gun on him, things got somewhat dangerous. Katie Holmes and Forest Whitaker both showed up along the way.
Released one year before "Cellular", both had eerily contrasting premises. Coincidentally, they were written by the same guy! "Phone Booth" earned nearly $100,000,000 in the box office and received modestly-positive reviews from critics.
5. A babysitter is caught in her own urban legend when she gets herself isolated in her employers' house and the killer is waiting upstairs. What 2006 movie does this describe?

Answer: When a Stranger Calls

Starring Camilla Belle as a babysitter, the film followed her around a fairly expensive lakeside mansion as she babysat some sleeping kids and received harassing phone calls. When the phone calls were discovered to have been made from the top floor of the house, she had to evade and evacuate with the kids or else face her own death.
The film was based on a 1979 film of the same premise and name. Despite critical panning, the movie made over $60,000,000 to become a box office success.
6. "Show me the money! Show me the money!" Cuba Gooding Jr. demands this in an Oscar-winning performance in what 1996 film?

Answer: Jerry Maguire

Nominated for five Academy Awards (including 'Best Picture' and 'Best Actor'), "Jerry Maguire" starred Tom Cruise as a sports agent suffering from a mental breakdown. The film progressed as he tried to help the only client he had in his own new firm and the growing relationship between himself and Renee Zellweger's character.

The "Show me the money" line occurs on a phone between Cuba Gooding Jr. and Tom Cruise and has since immersed itself into the pop culture lexicon along with the film's other major quotes, "you had me at hello", "you complete me", and others. Directed by Cameron Crowe (also known for "Almost Famous" and "Vanilla Sky"), the film made over $250,000,000 in the box office and received critical acclaim.
7. Okay, so your friend receives a call with an odd ringtone and doesn't answer it. It turns out to be from themselves, in the future, at the moment they died. After they die, you receive a call from yourself in the same circumstances. What 2008 horror film based on a Japanese movie by Takashi Miike follows this plot?

Answer: One Missed Call

Based on Takashi Miike's "Chakushin Ari", "One Missed Call" was one of the lowest-regarded movies of the 2000s (by critics). Initially ignoring pre-screenings for reviewers, it took on a 0% review score from "RottenTomatoes" but nevertheless went on to earn $45,000,000, becoming a success financially. Starring lesser-known Shannyn Sossamon, the film featured phones in some obscure ways.

While many scenes showed characters receiving calls as a result of some offshoot curse and dying (unnecessarily) because of its reach, some scenes (such as a severed hand dialing a phone) just made no sense.

This film actually scored lower on review sites than "Gigli", "The Adventures of Pluto Nash", and "Meet the Spartans". It's THAT bad. I'd have blocked the number.
8. It's hard to enjoy the holidays when someone's calling your sorority house's phone and squealing into the receiver. It's harder to enjoy when the caller is a murderer killing people in your attic. What classic Canadian horror film (from 1974) is this?

Answer: Black Christmas

The original "Black Christmas", a precursor to the slasher genre, was directed by by Bob Clark in 1974. A horror classic in every sense, the film starred Olivia Hussey, Margot Kidder, and Andrea Martin as sorority girls in Montreal. As they geared up for Christmas, people started to go missing and they started receiving calls from a somewhat offensive person on the other line.

As the film progressed, the main character received word that (as usual) the killer was in the house with her. Earning over $4,000,000 in the box office (a lot for the time considering the meager budget), the film received a critically-panned 2006 remake.
9. The main character of this 2007 comedy uses a hamburger-shaped telephone in her bedroom on numerous occasions. What is the name of the Oscar-winning film?

Answer: Juno

Since the release of "Juno" at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2007, the hamburger phone received a fair bit of notoriety, becoming a popular novelty item after the film's release and becoming inherently tied to the film's marketing campaign.

In the movie, teen Juno MacGuff became pregnant and found herself facing troubles in her predicament. On occasion, the hamburger phone is seen when she's in her bedroom at home. When making a call on one occasion, she says "I'm just calling to procure a hasty abortion. Can you just hold on for a second, I'm on my hamburger phone." While Ellen Page was nominated for 'Best Actress' at the Academy Awards and the film was nominated for 'Best Picture', the movie only took home 'Best Original Screenplay'. Receiving critical acclaim, the movie earned over $230,000,000.
10. While a solid gold phone is only a minor setpiece in this film, it's part of a grander heist. In what 2007 film does Al Pacino receive this faulty device?

Answer: Ocean's Thirteen

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, this was the third film in the George Clooney-starred Danny Ocean series beginning with "Ocean's Eleven". Al Pacino's character, having slighted one of the original eleven, got his just desserts when Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and the others in the group decided to exact revenge. One method of doing this was by getting their own fake gold phone into Pacino's casino control room and planting a magnetron inside to temporarily destroy all of the electronic equipment within. The movie was a hit at the box office earning over $300,000,000 and receiving modest reviews. All of the original eleven from the first two films returned for the third (as they did with the second).
