Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How does Homer Smith (Sidney Poitier) meet the nuns?

Answer: He stops on their grounds when his car radiator needs water.

Poitier was the first African-American male to win an Academy Award, but not the first to receive one. In 1948, James Haskett was given an honorary Oscar for his role as Uncle Remus in "Song of the South."
2. Mother Maria, the head nun, immediately puts him to work, asking Homer to repair what?

Answer: A leaky roof.

Homer assumes that he is being hired for a quick repair job. Little does he know what Mother Maria has in store for him, as she believes Homer was sent by God to help the nuns build a chapel.
3. Homer volunteers to teach the nuns English as they repeat sentences from a record. Which of these sentences is NOT one the nuns have to repeat?

Answer: I am wearing new shoes.

Younger viewers of the film today will get a kick out of seeing the cumbersome record player the nuns use. Homer still believes he is with the nuns on a temporary, "for hire" basis and doesn't know that they are penniless.
4. What food does Homer NOT order during his visit to the nearby restaurant?

Answer: A western omelet with extra bacon and onions.

To top this off he also orders a whole pie. He then becomes friends with the owner, who becomes an important piece of the chapel puzzle.
5. The restaurant owner, Juan Acalito, tells Homer he stays open during church services because _____________________?

Answer: Praying doesn't pay the rent.

Homer clearly understands Juan's words, noting that praying has not brought any money his way, either.
6. From what European city does Juan tell Homer the nuns found themselves having to escape and making a long trek to Arizona?

Answer: Berlin

Once in the United States, he tells Homer, the nuns were given their property by a successful farmer. But the nuns aren't successful and have little resources for upgrades. This information touches Homer, who begins to change his attitude.
7. Homer infuses music into his English lessons, teaching the nuns "Amen." But he begins on the wrong foot by first singing the opening lines of which song?

Answer: Frankie and Johnny

"Amen" was written by Jester Hairston, best known for his role as Rolly Forbes on the 90s sitcom "Amen." The singing voice of Hairston was dubbed for Poitier's in this film.
8. Sorely in need of money, Homer takes a part-time job with what company?

Answer: Ashton Company, Inc.

Here he meets Mr. Ashton, who at first is not too nice, addressing Homer as "boy" and doubting his construction and contracting skills. Homer ignores the slights and Ashton's insulting tone, and agrees to work two days a week for the contractor. Homer also adopts a firmer resolve to build the chapel.
9. In one cute scene Homer has a special prayer. What is it?

Answer: Lord, if you're still listening, how about a little meat on the table.

The four junior nuns act like little girls at Christmas when Homer gives them a bunch of lollipops following his first shopping trip. Mother Maria, however, appears quite ambivalent, even after Homer unpacks some "real food" for all to share.
10. In their only argument, Homer says what to Mother Maria?

Answer: You don't even know how to accept a gift from somebody without making them feel small.

Mother Maria won't say thank you here, instead insisting that any extra money should be spent on supplies for the chapel.
11. How does Mother Maria explain the slow progress of the chapel building during a private prayer to God?

Answer: I failed because I put my faith in people instead of in God.

Mother Maria is more upset that her letter attempts for philanthropic donations have gone unheeded. But she shows her unhappiness by lashing out when Homer is at his most generous. At this point, however, Homer storms off and apparently abandons the project. It is at least three weeks before he returns, and he immediately begins to work again.
12. When Homer returns, he at first refuses any help. From whom does he finally accept help?

Answer: Juan, Mr. Ashton and townspeople

Juan and his helpers find it amusing that Homer is trying to build the chapel by himself. Homer finally accepts one brick to be handed to him by Juan, and within minutes a construction assembly line begins. Then Mr. Ashton appears with a load of bricks.
13. As the chapel nears completion, what happens that annoys Mother Maria?

Answer: The workers, including Homer, hold a fiesta near the building.

Homer, Juan and some of the worker enjoy some spirits and traditional Mexican dancing to celebrate. They're not raucous, but the fiesta's being held so close to the chapel is not appropriate to Mother Maria.
14. In their last English lesson together, what does Homer trick Mother Maria into finally saying?

Answer: Thank You.

There is an eerie stillness in the room when this happens, as Mother Maria realizes that Homer and the nuns are about to part ways. Lilia Skala earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her convincing portrayal of the feisty Mother Maria.
15. What is the final work Homer is seen completing on the chapel?

Answer: He writes his name in the cement at the base of the cross atop the roof.

A sequel to the film was made in 1978. Called "Christmas Lilies of the Field," the less successful but equally charming film starred Billy Dee Williams as Homer Smith.
