Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is Her Majesty's Ship Surprise when the movie begins?

Answer: off the coast of Brazil

The action throughout the movie takes place along both coasts of Brazil, and in the Galapagos Islands.
2. Who was the first to notice something that turned out to be the ferocious French frigate "Acheron?"

Answer: A seaman on watch duty

He didn't actually see a sail, but did call the fog bank to Mr. Hollom's attention, as he thought that he head something, "like a bell." Ships used bells to announce the time.
3. What is the term that means "everyone to their stations in preparation for battle?"

Answer: "beat to quarters"

The signal was a snare drum, played by one of the marines, which always accompanied Her Majesty's ships.
4. What was tattooed across the fingers of able seaman Joe Plaice, whose brains later became an object of interest to the Surprise?

Answer: hold fast

Although I couldn't be sure why he had this tattooed across his middle eight fingers, it might be surmised that "hold fast" is translatable to "hold on tightly" (as it was very easy to wash overboard, or "stay strong," since Plaice does show the tattoo to Blakeney during the height of the first encounter with the "Acheron."
5. What does Jack tell the sailing master, Mr. Allen, that they do not have time to go "crawling through the Brazilian rain forest" to find?

Answer: a new mast

Ships in these days were used to getting blown apart, whether by nature or enemy ships, and would carry lumber and parts with which to refit at sea. Crews were often so efficient that they could have a badly damamged ship up and running in a day.
6. What do the sailors specifically refer to the "Acheron" as while discussing her belowdecks, in regards to the sort of ship she is?

Answer: a privateer

Privateers would receive a written affadavit from the government under which her owner operated, that said that the ship could prey upon any enemy of her country, and "sink, burn, or take her a prize." Prize money would then be distributed in a heirarchial order: the government, the captain, the officers, and the crew.
7. Respectively, what intruments do the captain and the surgeon play?

Answer: fiddle and cello

Jack and Stephen actually met, in the books, at a concert.
8. What is the 'sailor jargon' phrase uttered in the movie that means something fails to function properly? "It ________."

Answer: don't answer

That's what happened when the "Acheron" pounded the "Surprise's" rudder...her steering didn't answer. Barrett Bonden said so.
9. Who was it that lit the lanterns and unfurled the sails on the dummy-float that Cpt. Aubrey devised to distract the "Acheron" the night of their second meeting with the ship?

Answer: Peter Calamy

"Now tell me that wasn't fun?!"
10. What do the sailors begin to refer to Mr. Hollom as, following a string of bad luck with which they associate him? "A ________."

Answer: jonah

Everyone pretty much knows the story: Jonah offends God, God causes bad luck to rain down on the ship that carries him.
11. What eventually happens to Mr. Hollom?

Answer: he commits suicide by jumping into the water holding gun shot

I thought it was a sad twist of irony that the "Surprise" got her wind the next day.
12. Why do Stephen and Jack get into a shouting match after the "Surprise" picks up the two survivors of a whaling ship taken by the "Acheron?"

Answer: Jack won't let Stephen off the ship to explore the Galápagos Islands, like he promised

The movie did a great job of recreating the dynamic between Stephen and Jack as it was in the book. They disagreed on everything from women to politics, almost killed each other in a duel once, but are virtually inseparable friends.
13. What does Higgins tell Jack he must do in order to be prepared to operate on Dr. Maturin?

Answer: study some pictures

But it was just to get his bearings!
14. What gives Jack the idea to disguise the "Surprise" as a whaling ship to lure the "Acheron" close enough to feel her broadside?

Answer: Stephen's rare phasmid

15. What is significant about the Doctor aboard the "Acheron?"

Answer: he's actually the ship's Captain

The rare phasmid was that strange bug that disguised itself as a stick to confuse its enemies.
