Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Wolf" and "Chinatown"

Answer: Jack Nicholson

The 1994 horror-romance film "Wolf" was an interesting werewolf movie. In it, a regular person, Will Randall, is bitten by a wolf and starts getting animalistic characteristics. When he discovers that the person who was promoted over him is also having an affair with his wife, he leaves to start a new life. However, the werewolf transformations force him to deal with his past and make a new future.

"Chinatown" is a 1974 film that was a crime thriller in the style of a film noir. The story follows a private investigator, Jake Gittes, who has to investigate a murder of an engineer who is caught up in a plot concerning the development of the entire San Fernando Valley. The film was selected to be preserved in the US National Film Registry and it was nominated for eleven Oscars, winning one.

Both films have Jack Nicholson as an actor. In "Wolf", Nicholson plays the main character, Will Randall, and in "Chinatown" he also is starring with the role of Jake Gittes.
2. "French Kiss" and "In & Out"

Answer: Kevin Kline

If you like romantic comedies, the 1995 film "French Kiss" is certainly one of the best, in my opinion. It tells the story of the American Kate who flies to France to win back her Canadian fiancé who has fallen in love with a French woman. On the flight she meets Luc, an annoying smuggler who uses Kate to smuggle a diamond and a cutting of a grape vine into her bag. Needless to say, the two fall in love with some funny interactions.

"In & Out" was a 1997 comedy that was directed by Frank Oz. It tells the story of a high school teacher, Howard Brackett, who has a student that is nominated for an Oscar. When he wins, he mentions Howard in the speech and adds that Howard is gay. Howard's friends and family are stunned and Howard is indignant that he is not. When a gay reporter stays behind to cover Howard's wedding, it becomes more and more obvious to Howard that maybe he is, actually, gay.

Kevin Kline starred in both of these movies. In "In & Out", Kline played Howard Brackett alongside Tom Selleck who plays Peter Malloy, the reporter who stays behind and teaches Howard about his sexuality. In "French Kiss" Kline portrays Luc, the thief, alongside Meg Ryan's Kate.
3. "True Romance" and "The Fifth Element"

Answer: Gary Oldman

"True Romance" was a 1993 crime movie that was written by Quentin Tarantino. It tells the story of Clarence and Alabama, a married couple who get involved in murder and drugs. When everything seems lost, they manage to get out of it (mostly) in one piece.

"The Fifth Element" is a 1997 science-fiction film that pits Korben Dallas, a cab driver and former Special Forces office, and Leeloo, what is supposed to be the "Fifth Element" in a weapon that can save Earth, against the great evil that threatens to destroy Earth and its agent on Earth, Zorg. While Korben tries to get Leeloo to the place where she can save the planet, Leeloo learns about humanity and why it is worth saving.

Gary Oldman has a role in both of these movies. In "True Romance" he is Drexl, Alabama's former pimp. He is joined by Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette. Oldman plays Zorg, the great evil's agent on Earth as Mila Jovovich and Bruce Willis take lead roles in "The Fifth Element".
4. "Cry-Baby" and "A Nightmare On Elm Street"

Answer: Johnny Depp

"Cry-Baby" was a musical rom-com from 1990 set in the 1950s. It tells the story of a gang of 'drapes', a subculture in that town, and their conflict with the 'squares'. When Allison wants to switch over from the 'squares' to the 'drapes', Cry-Baby Walker falls for her and the two begin a relationship. The two have to confront their past in order to get through the present and make their relationship last.

"A Nightmare On Elm Street" was the first in the horror franchise that introduced us to Freddy Krueger as the nightmare killer. When Tina has a terrifying nightmare that left four real slashes on her nightgown, she calls her friends Glen and Nancy, and her boyfriend Rod. However, that night the four of them share the same dream in which Tina gets killed, and when they wake up, Tina is lying bloodied and dead in her bed. They then have to survive the killing spree of the nightmare killer Freddy Krueger.

Johnny Depp plays Cry-Baby Walker in "Cry-Baby" opposite Amy Locane as Allison, his love interest. He plays Glen, Nancy's boyfriend, in "A Nightmare On Elm Street", the movie that started the successful horror franchise.
5. "Heaven & Earth" and "The Fugitive"

Answer: Tommy Lee Jones

The 1993 biopic "Heaven & Earth" is based on the book by Le Ly Hayslip "When Heaven and Earth Changed Places" about her life from the Vietnam War and up to her return to Vietnam in 1986. In the movie, the heroine, Le Ly faces pressures from both the North and the South, and moves to Saigon. There she gets pregnant, but also meets Steve, an American serviceman. After the war, the family moves to the United States and try to settle down, though Steve's PTSD changes him greatly.

"The Fugitive" is a crime drama also from 1993. It tells the story of Dr. Richard Kinble who returns home to find a man in his house who has murdered his wife. He is wrongfully convicted for her murder and is sentenced to death. However, a prison escape allows Richard to get out. He is pursued by US Marshal Samuel Gerard, and has to evade searches and get creative in order to clear his name.

Tommy Lee Jones plays in both of these movies. In "The Fugitive" he is Samuel Gerard, the Marshal in pursuit of Harrison Ford's Richard Kimble. In "Heaven & Earth" he is Gunnery Sergeant Steve Butler, the love interest of Le Ly, played by Hiep Thi Le.
6. "To Die For" and "Return To Paradise"

Answer: Joaquin Phoenix

"To Die For" is based off a book written by Joyce Maynard based off of the life of Pamela Smart, the murderer. In it, Suzanne Stone aspires to have a career on television. When her husband asks her to take a step back from it to help with his restaurant, she seduces a high-schooler, Jimmy, and uses him to murder her husband, Larry. However, all secrets have a way of resurfacing...

"Return To Paradise" tells the story of three friends, Lewis, Sherriff, and Tony, who are vacationing in Malaysia and buy a bag of hash but threw it in the trash at the end of their stay. When Lewis decides to stay to work with orangutans and the other two return to America, they think nothing of it. However, Lewis is taken into custody when the police find the hash and is treated harshly, psychologically. Two years later, Beth, Lewis' sister and a lawyer asks Tony and Sheriff to return to Malaysia so that Lewis will not get the death sentence. When Sheriff agrees and decides to take responsibility, he hopes it will convince the judge to be lenient with Lewis.

Joaquin Phoenix acts in both of these films. In "To Die For" he is Jimmy, the teenager seduced by Suzanne, played by Nicole Kidman. In "Return To Paradise" he plays Lewis, the man condemned to death for a minor crime by the corrupt Malaysian justice system.
7. "Damage" and "Waterland"

Answer: Jeremy Irons

"Damage" is a thriller released in 1992 and directed by Louis Mallet. It follows Stephen Fleming, an aspiring politician with a normal family who meets Anna Barton, a diplomat's daughter who is involved with his son. Nevertheless, Stephen and Anna have an affair, one that has dire consequences when it begins to take over Stephen's life.

"Waterland" is a 1992 movie based on the Graham Swift novel of the same name. It tells of a high school teacher named Tom Crick who has a mid-life crisis by recounting his family's history to his class. He discloses damaging information that eventually leads to his dismissal, but also to him finding himself.

In both of these films, Jeremy Irons was the star. In "Damage" Irons plays the politician, Stephen FLeming opposite Juliette Binoche's Anna. Jeremy Iron's role in "Waterland" is Tom Crick, the high school teacher.
8. "Trainspotting" and "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen"

Answer: Ewan McGregor

"Trainspotting" is a film that's hard to categorize, perhaps a drama, perhaps a comedy? A 1996 Danny Boyle film, it follows a heroin addict as he goes about cleaning himself up amongst his addict friends. The story talks about the dangers of addiction and the lengths that addicts will go about getting their next hit, and was a huge success in the UK and beyond.

In the 2011 romantic drama "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen", Fred Jones is an expert in fish who is tasked with the seemingly impossible mission of bringing salmon to the Middle Eastern country of Yemen. Alfred is reluctant to try, but, with seemingly unlimited resources, he puts a proposal together. All the while, he works closely with Harriet Chetwode-Talbot, the advisor for a Yemeni chief, and he learns what love actually is.

Ewan McGregor plays Mark "Rent Boy" Renton in "Trainspotting" and does a great job of portraying what an addict's life looks like. In "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen", McGregor plays Fred Jones very convincingly and has great on-screen chemistry with Emily Blunt, playing Harriet.
9. "Elizabeth" and "Les Misérables"

Answer: Geoffrey Rush

"Elizabeth" was a 1998 biopic which followed the life of Queen Elizabeth I of England. It is largely based off of true events early in the reign of the once-imprisoned queen. As a new queen holding on to scraps of power, she navigates treachery and deceit to come out victorious against her (and England's) enemies.

The 1998 adaptation of the historical musical "Les Misérables" was directed by Billie August. It was, in turn, an adaptation of Victor Hugo's serial novel of the same name. It tells the story of Jean Valjean, a convict, unjustly imprisoned, who is released on parole and goes out into the world and tries to do the right thing. It is written on the eve of the French Revolution, something that colours the latter part of the story.

The movie "Elizabeth" had Geoffrey Rush as Francis Walsingham, Queen Elizabeth's advisor, manservant, and bodyguard. Rush was Javert in "Les Misérables", the police officer who recognizes Jean Valjean and wants to bring him back to jail no matter what.
10. "Hercules" and "Be Cool"

Answer: Dwayne Johnson

The 2014 release of "Hercules" was one of two films about that mythical hero that year. The Brett Ratner production featured the story of the Greek hero Hercules in his participation in the Thracian Wars, based off the graphic novel by Steve Moore.

"Be Cool" was a 2005 sequel to "Get Shorty", both films based off of the novels by Elmore Leonard. A crime comedy, the plot of the movie follows Chili Palmer as he continues expanding his entertainment empire by getting into the music business and crossing paths with Russian hitmen along the way.

Dwayne Johnson was in both of these films, in "Hercules" as the titular character and in "Be Cool" as Eliot Wilhelm, a gay Samoan bodyguard who aspires to be an actor.
