Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What job did Carl Fredricksen hold before he retired?

Answer: balloon salesman

Carl starts off the movie as a young child who breaks his arm trying to retrieve his lost balloon. Later, Carl becomes a balloon salesman and has all the equipment necessary to fill the balloons he needs to make his house take flight.
2. What badge is Russell missing?

Answer: Assisting the Elderly

Russell lands on Carl's doorstep eager to help him do almost anything in hopes of getting his only missing badge for Assisting the Elderly. Carl sends Russell off on a wild goose chase only to later realize that Russell was hiding under his porch when his house took flight.
3. What is the name of Charles Muntz's blimp?

Answer: Spirit of Adventure

The Spirit of Adventure is first seen in a black and white movie Carl is watching as a child. Later, the plane which was adapted for Muntz's many dogs is seen again in Paradise Falls. The movie has an excellent battle scene between the Spirit of Adventure and Carl's flying house.
4. Why does Carl want to take his house to Paradise Falls?

Answer: To keep his promise to Ellie.

Ellie and Carl spend their whole lives together in this film, and even after Ellie dies she lives on through a picture on Carl's living room wall. Carl does everything for Ellie, including trying to get their house to Paradise Falls, a dream they both had since childhood.
5. What does Russell become when he earns all his badges?

Answer: Sr. Wilderness Explorer

Although Russell has all but one of his Wilderness Explorer badges, he's never been camping in the wilderness at the beginning of the movie! At the end of the movie, Russell earns his badge and Carl shows up to support him, filling in for his absentee father.
6. Where is Paradise Falls?

Answer: South America

Paradise Falls is the place where Muntz discovers exotic, never before seen animals. Carl, as a child, crosses his heart and promises to take Ellie to Paradise Falls. Unfortunately she dies before they get the chance to go, and Carl decides to go alone with his house in tow.
7. Why was Carl ordered to live in a retirement home?

Answer: He hit a construction worker over the head.

On the day that Carl gets an advertisment for Shady Oaks, he hits a construction worker over the head for knocking down his mailbox. The mailbox is symbolic of Carl's marriage, a shared project, bearing both he and his wife's names. His violent actions lead him to be ordered into the retirement residence, although he never quite makes it there.
8. How is Dug able to "speak"?

Answer: He had a translation collar allowing him to speak many languages.

Dug was able to talk during the movie due to a unique collar built by Muntz. Dug was looking for a new master when he came upon Carl and Russell. He shows his loyalty to them by helping them escape from the other malevolent dogs.
9. What are on the tips of Carl's cane?

Answer: tennis balls

Much of the movie takes place while Carl is old and requires a cane to walk. The tennis balls on the tips of his cane are used to distract the malevolent dogs and are also swallowed and spit up (gross!) by several characters in the movie.
10. What is the name of the 13-foot-tall flightless bird?

Answer: Kevin

In Carl's house there is a model bird similar to Kevin under a drawing of Paradise Falls. It is a skeleton of a bird of the same species as Kevin that leads to Muntz's initial disgrace in the scientific community. Kevin, as it turns out, is a girl bird worried about raising her young and outwitting Muntz and his dogs.
