Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I'll have you beg. Split open like rotted fruit, all of you!"

Answer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

This particular quote comes from the Joss Whedon movie "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (it's my personal favorite quote in the whole movie). Rutger Hauer's character, the vampire lord Lothos, says this to the dance-goers he encounters after he "crashes" the dance near the end of the movie. Fortunately for the people attending he does nothing of the sort thanks to Buffy's interference.
2. "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum..."

Answer: They Live!

This famous quote came from the John Carpenter classic "They Live!" starring "Rowdy" Roddy Piper (John Nada), Keith David (Frank), and Meg Foster (Holly). The movie is about a massive collection of aliens that use subliminal messages (placed on ads, money, and even shop signs) to control the human race. By using a pair of special sunglasses, called Hoffman Lenses (there is a rumor that the name stems from Dr. Albert Hoffman, creator of the hallucinogenic LSD), Nada is able to see these messages, as well as all the other deceptions the aliens employ (many of them are actually desguising themselves as humans). Nada utters the line soon before he obliterates a bank-full of the alien scum.
3. "You can't come back with a comeback after eight seconds. You got three seconds. Five, tops. That's why they call it a quip. Not a sloooowwwwp."

Answer: Shallow Hal

From the movie "Shallow Hal". Said by Hal's (Jack Black) best friend Mauricio (Jason Alexander) after Hal had a very delayed response while the two were trading insults. Must be seen to be fully appreciated.
4. "You know who else I like that didn't get much play? Velma from Scooby-Doo. She was cool. She was a hip, hip lady."

Answer: Can't Hardly Wait

This line was thrown in almost as an afterthought to end a scene with the character Stoner Guy and his friend. It bears resemblance to a considerably longer line from "Dazed and Confused" because it was a sort of homage to that film (the "Dazed and Confused" line was "Behind every good man there is a woman, and that woman was Martha Washington man, and every day George would come home, she would have a big fat bowl waiting for him, man when he come in the door, man she was a hip, hip, hip lady, man.").
5. "I've seen enough horror movies to know any weirdo wearing a mask is never friendly."

Answer: Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives

A pretty funny line considering the movie it was used in. While the Friday the 13th series was never known for its intricate storylines or brilliantly scripted dialogue, it was blessed with the fact that it never really took itself too seriously (or maybe it did but nobody noticed).

This is just another one of those instances where the nameless, faceless writers were allowed the chance for some creative freedom and actually did a pretty good job with it.
6. "Twenty-eight days... six hours... forty-two minutes... twelve seconds. That... is when the world... will end."

Answer: Donnie Darko

Pretty much the flagship line in this 2001 sci-fi drama about a Middlesex teen who is chosen to "save the world". He is visited by a six-foot tall bunny rabbit named Frank who prophecies this end with that line, and he is then guided by Frank through various events/missions in order to convince him that he should indeed "save the world".

This description probably makes the movie sound much different than it really is to those who haven't seen it, but getting any more detailed would spoil the movie, so I am reluctant to delve any deeper...
7. "You know what the real tragedy of all this is? I'm not even supposed to be here today!"

Answer: Clerks

One of the greatest lines of the modern day film. Kevin Smith crafted a profanity-laced masterpiece with his independent first film "Clerks". There was such a variety of quotes to choose from in this movie (almost went with "I hope it feels so good to be right.

There's nothing more exhilarating than pointing out the shortcomings of others, is there?"), but I decided to go with the one that held the entire movie together. Dante Hicks said "I'm not even supposed to be here today" throughout the whole movie, generally when problems arose, to basically drive home the misfortune/irony of the whole sordid mess he was going through. Subtle yet effective.
8. "There's that word again; 'heavy'. Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?"

Answer: Back to the Future

A highly amusing line from a highly amusing movie, there were once again many quotes at my disposal. I went with this one because it was memorable, but not too memorable.
9. "I play a lot of cards. Obviously."

Answer: That Thing You Do

Hopefully I steered a few people off with the other movie titles, because to me this is a very obvious quote (most, hopefully, aren't as obsessed with this movie as I am). A drunk Lenny (Steve Zhan) says this line in a bar while playing cards with several old men.
10. "Nobody's gonna hurt anybody. We're gonna be like three little Fonzies here. And what's Fonzie like? Come on Yolanda what's Fonzie like?!"

Answer: Pulp Fiction

Classic Tarantino flick about the lives of several intersecting characters. This line was said nearing the end of the movie when Jules, Yolanda, and Pumpkin are all in a standstill after the duo of Yolanda and Pumpkin rob restaurant-goers of their wallets. Vincent eventually comes out of the bathroom (always in there at the wrong time, it seems) and adds to the tension, nearly getting himself shot in the process.

The group eventually settle their "disagreement"...
