Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played the character of Toddy in the film?

Answer: Robert Preston

In the film, Toddy was a gay cafe/nightclub singer who worked in Chez Lui! at the beginning of the film. As an actor, Robert Preston was also in films such as 'The Music Man'. He had also previously worked with both Blake Edwards and Julie Andrews on the film 'S.O.B' the year before.
2. What was the first song performed in the film by Julie Andrews?

Answer: Cherry Ripe

The first song performed by Julie Andrews in the film was 'Cherry Ripe', although many people think that it was 'Le Jazz Hot', because that was the first song she performed in her role as Victor. As Toddy left the Cafe, where he had had his breakfast, and began walking to Chez Lui, you could start to hear the song. Victoria was first seen when Toddy entered Chez Lui and she was auditioning (singing 'Cherry Ripe') to be a performer there.

The song 'Cherry Ripe' was chosen to be sung here because it was completely inappropriate for a nightclub; it was a song that Julie Andrews had sung as a child soprano.
3. Which of the following best described Julie Andrews' character?

Answer: A woman who played a man, who played a woman!

Her original character was Victoria Grant, a failing soprano singer. After she met Toddy (a gay cafe singer), he persuaded her to pretend to be a man called Count Victor Gretzinski who was "Europe's foremost female impersonator". She then performed as a female impersonator called Victoria!
4. Which of these songs was not in the movie?

Answer: Louis Says

'Louis Says' was not in the film but it was in the Broadway show; although it was removed early in the shows run. 'Le Jazz Hot' was the first song performed by Julie Andrews as Victor (as the female impersonator, Victoria). 'The Shady Dame of Seville' was the second of this type of performance and Crazy World was the fourth, although Crazy World differed from the other two because she was dressed like a man rather than a woman.
5. Who wrote, produced and directed the film?

Answer: Blake Edwards

Blake Edwards is Julie Andrews' husband. He wrote the role of Victor/Victoria for his wife. On the DVD commentary it said that the film only took him about a month to write. He also wrote the book for the Broadway play. Blake Edwards has written, directed and produced a number of films.

Some of the most famous were the Pink Panther films. He has collaborated on a number of films (other than 'Victor/Victoria')with his wife including: 'Darling Lili'; 'S.O.B' and '10'.
6. When King went to kiss Victoria for the first time, was he certain that she was a woman?

Answer: Yes

Ssspicious, King has been spying on Victoria and saw that she was a woman when she was getting into a both. Which was why he said 'I don't care if you are a man' when he kissed her. Which is followed by probably the most famous line of the film (said by Victoria): 'I am not a man' and the reply was: 'I still don't care'!
7. Who wrote the music score for the film?

Answer: Henry Mancini

Henry Mancini wrote the entire score for 'Victor/Victoria'. He also began reworking the score for the Broadway show several years later, but died at the age of 70, whilst the show's score was still in progress. His most well-known works were probably the theme of the 'Pink Panther' and 'Moon River', as well as the soundtrack of 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. Leslie Bricusse worked with Mancini to produce the lyrics of the songs in 'Victor/Victoria'.
8. In what capital city was the film set?

Answer: Paris

Blake Edwards had originally wanted to film the film in Paris. However, he felt that there were too many TV aerials, which would not suit the film because it was set in 1934, before TV was commercially available. It was actually filmed on two adjoining sound stages; which turned out to have advantages, as it allowed the use of snow. If they had filmed in Paris, they could not have been assured snow because they couldn't have controlled the weather.
9. Who performed the final performance of 'The Shady Dame of Seville'?

Answer: Toddy

The final performance of 'The Shady Dame of Seville' was performed by Robert Preston's character, Toddy. Victoria/Victor (Julie Andrews) was supposed to perform the number but, after a police officer came to check that she was actually a man, Toddy pretended to be Victoria and performed the song. Victoria was actually sat in the audience during the performance and could be seen singing along at one point. Toddy was a gay Cafe singer who became best friends with Victoria when he made a plan to help them both and make them rich (he is the one that came up with the idea of Victoria pretending to be a man).

At the beginning, Toddy and Victoria pretended to be lovers but as Victoria and King became closer, Toddy became involved with King's bodyguard, Squash, and they remained together until the end of the film.
10. Was this the correct first line, for the song 'Crazy World', sung by Julie Andrews just after she had been reunited with King in her dressing room (after performing 'Shady Dame of Seville' for the second time): 'Crazy world everyday the same old roller coaster ride'.

Answer: No

This was actually the first line of the second verse. The first line of the song was: 'Crazy world full of crazy contradictions like a child'.
'Crazy World' was written specifically for Julie Andrews by Henry Mancini. He knew her voice had a wide range and he purposely wrote the song with an octave and half range throughout the song, because he knew she could handle it.
