Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which country was experiencing blackouts before the Tripods invaded the U.S.?

Answer: Ukraine

Prior to the Tripod attacks in the U.S., news programs began airing stories about Ukraine, which was experiencing total blackouts and terrible earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter Scale. Meanwhile, Ray Ferrier has his kids, Rachel and Robbie, at his house in New York.

Although Ray's kids are usually with their mother, they're staying with Ray while their mother and her new boyfriend are out of town.
2. What is the name of the mechanic who fixes the car near Ray's house?

Answer: Manny

When the storm hits and lighting strikes an intersection near Ray's house, many people go to investigate. Along the way, a nearby mechanic, Manny, tells Ray that all of the power is out, even in the cars. When they arrive at the scene, the Alien Tripod rises from underground and begins shooting its heat rays at people; turning them to ashes. Ray rushes home and has the kids gather their things before heading to Manny's to take the only working car in town.

When Manny tries to stop them, he gets turned to dust by the Tripod beam just as the family is escaping.
3. After the Tripod attacks the streets near Ray's house, he tells Robbie to pack up some food to take with them. What does Robbie not end up bringing?

Answer: Seasoning Salt

When Ray rushed the kids into the stolen car, Robbie only packed what he found in Ray's kitchen. A box of Bran Flakes, ketchup, mustard, vinaigrette, tabasco, and barbecue sauce were all that he could find. Rather than make something with the items they found, Ray decided to cook something up in Mary Ann's kitchen.
4. What is Rachel allergic to?

Answer: Peanut butter

When the three arrive at Mary Ann and Tim's, they find that they aren't home, but all of the power is still on. Ray decides to make the kids peanut butter sandwiches, but when Rachel says that she's been allergic to peanut butter her whole life, he gets frustrated.

They all decide to camp out in the basement for the night, but are awakened when more lightning strikes and large flames start shooting through the basement windows. When Ray investigates the next morning, he finds a crashed plane next to the house.
5. Where do Ray, Robbie, and Rachel decide to go to meet up with Mary Ann and Tim?

Answer: Boston

After their horrible night in the basement, the three load back into the car and decide drive to Boston by taking roads through the empty countryside, to prevent anyone from seeing that they have a working car. Along the way, they stop for a bathroom break and Rachel walks to a river where she finds dead bodies floating down the stream. Before they load back into the car, army troops drive by and Robbie tries to join them, but Ray and Rachel stop him.
6. How do the three plan to cross the Hudson River?

Answer: By ferry

In order to prevent anyone from seeing their car, Ray thinks its a good idea to cross the Hudson River by ferry, but his instinct turns out to be a bad idea. When they arrive, confused refugees force them to leave the car behind and climb onto the ferry just as the Tripods arrive.

When a Tripod emerges from underwater, it flips the ferry and the three swim to the opposite shore (while nearly being spotted by Tripods). They decide to continue on foot.
7. What flavoured Schnapps does Harlan find in the basement of the old house?

Answer: Peach

When the three come across more troops fighting the Tripods, Robbie runs to join them, and when Ray has to save Rachel, Robbie gets away from him. When there's a large explosion, Ray fears that Robbie is dead and takes Rachel to the abandoned house where Harlan Ogilvy is staying.

He tells them to stay since he has enough food to last them a few weeks. When he pulls Ray aside to get to know each other, he offers up a bit of Peach Schnapps (which he has a crate full of) and he says that his whole family was killed by the Tripods.

This contributes to Harlan's insanity while Ray and Rachel are staying with him.
8. What is the name of the lullaby that Rachel asks Ray to sing to her?

Answer: Hushabye Mountain

When Rachel tries to go to sleep in the old house, she asks him to sing "Hushabye Mountain", but he can't since he doesn't know the words. The three stay in the basement until aliens venture down and investigate. We learn that Harlan lost his whole family because of the Tripods, and he nearly reveals their position, but Ray stops him.

The aliens retreat back to their Tripods without noticing them.
9. What colour are the weeds that the aliens are growing?

Answer: Red

After staying with Harlan for a while, some red, thick weeds begin growing into the basement, and the Tripods are fertilizing them with blood. Harlan begins to go insane upon seeing this, and Ray is forced to kill him to prevent the aliens from hurting Rachel. Later that night, the aliens find them and Rachel runs away.

When Ray runs outside, the aliens capture her and Ray finds a bunch of grenades in an army truck and has himself get captured. As the alien is about to pull him into the ship, he sets off the grenades inside of it and saves himself and Rachel.

When they arrive in Boston, they realize that the weeds are turning grey and are slowly dying.
10. What animals alert Ray to the fact that the Tripods' shields are down?

Answer: Birds

In Boston, Ray realizes that the aliens are starting to slowly die and the Tripods are crashing themselves. When a flock of ravens begin circling one Tripod, Ray alerts some troops and they shoot the Tripod down. Ray and Rachel finally arrive at their destination and they reunite with Mary Ann, Tim, and Rachel and Robbie's Grandparents. We also find that Robbie survived the explosion and made it to Boston before they did.

"From the moment the invaders arrived, breathed our air, ate, and drank, they were doomed. They were undone, destroyed, after all of man's weapons and devices had failed, by the tiniest creatures that God, in His wisdom, put upon this earth. By the toll of a billion deaths, man has earned his immunity, his right to survive among this planet's infinite organisms, and that right is ours against all challenges. For neither do men live nor die in vain."
